Soon to become OBH (One Brooklyn Health), the administration team has high turn over, as well as the rest of the system.  Example: I interviewed, accepted the position and when I started, the manager and lead had already departed.  

It seems that there are a few people in positions by default of senority.  There is a lot of hierarchy in place, and this causes failure in so many ways when it comes to communication.  There is a lot going on here and its a interesting system to try to become part of.  

I stood in the emergency department working on printing issues, and observed the patient's interactions with the end users (staff).  It seems that patient care fails a bit due to possible lack of training, misuse of electronic systems in place, the resources (lap-tops, desk top computers, printers, ect...do not work as expected).  

End users need to feel supported, when asked why not submit service now tickets for the numerous issues they were having, the response was consistently, there is no to talk to after you enter the ticket, they close tickets without actual work being done, no one follows up and they can enter/put in multiple tickets and no one cares.  

I was offered an extentoin to stay thought the end of the year, prior to accepting, I let them know about a vacation week at the end of the year, this had been planned for a while, and they asked if I could cancel it, (I replied nicely with a - "no" response). My contact let me know that this was something they deemed as a non dedicated employee, so we parted ways.  

Its a strict system to work within, if you need to leave an hour early, you need let your boss/lead/director know and fill out a form and wait for approval.  If you want holiday time you need to let them know 4-5months early.

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Rutland Nursing Home is the home to about four hundred residents. The sub-acute unit of the Nursing Home is where I worked. It is a fast-paste work environment where patients from the emergency room are housed to receive rehabilitative services. The sub-acute Social Workers are industrious, and perform the role of facilitator at Comprehensive Care Meetings with the interdisciplinary team, where they develop discharge plans. They also welcome residents to the facility, assess them , document welcome notes and assessments, and do their progress notes. The Social worker is also responsible for booking appointments and organizing transportation for residents to meet with their physicians. A primary role that they engage in is to ensure that residents transition smoothly back into the community after their stay at the facility. They therefore have to ensure that the residents receive their medication, and other medical equipment on leaving the hospital. It is the social worker's job to also fax the doctor's prescription or care plan to the respective home-care agencies. These efforts are crucial in ensuring a safe and smooth transition into the community. The policy is that residents remain at the sub-acute floor for a maximum of thirty days. Due to this time-line, patient turnover is fast, workload is immense, and employees are constantly busy. Employees at the organization work as a team to ensure that the needs of residents are well met.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My years woking as the Adult Day Care Dietitian were wonderful.  Unfortunately the Center was closed due to Medicaid cuts.  The remaining years I worked as a Clinical Staff Dietitian on the Acute side of the Hospital.  The expected workload was not achievable in the allotted time.  You were expected to clock out and continue working till you met the quota.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Toxic middle and upper management.  Inexperienced, middle management was often hired based on nepotism and not actual clinical skills or knowledge.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Hostile, lots of favoritism and stressed-out management making erratic , spontaneous decisions.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
First ten years were pleasant, productive and I was using my experience and knowledge to help the patients in the Adult Day Care Center achieve their goals.  The last 6 years were chaotic, stressful and consisted of mindless paper-pushing.  
This hospital went through a major down-sizing during this time and was dismantled  and absorbed for the monetary benefit of land-grabbers that bought the land.  The staff was lied to and told affordable housing would be built.  Fortunately, I was able to retire.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Helping medically fragile children and gaining experience.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There’s never enough supplies for basic things like medication administration, feeding bags, feeding pumps that actually work, pulse ox probes to monitor the children’s heart rate and oxygen saturation, and the environmental team does a terrible job at cleaning so the place looks like a mess all the time. The facility is still using paper charts which is messy and time consuming and it leaves room for many errors.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment can be great at times. Some staff are helpful but some aren’t. A lot of the staff seem angry and like they just don’t want to be there but there’s a lot of staff that are there and love what they do. There’s a lot of bickering between the CNAs, and bickering from the CNAs towards the nurses as well. It can sometimes be a hostile environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy. As soon as the RN comes in, they have to make the assignment, give report, check on the kids and get the day started by giving meds, feeds/flushes, and helping get the kids ready for school. It can be overwhelming but the kids are wonderful and make it worth it.

I have enjoyed working at Brookdale Hospital for almost 12 years. Most of the people are friendly and dedicated to their jobs, The work is intense especially in the psychiatric unit. The staff does an excellent job in maintaining peace among the patients. 

I have enjoyed working with the kids and opening their eyes to their potential. Because I work in and underserved neighborhood some of the kids have no idea of the possibilities of jobs that exist. I have tried in my work with them to let them know that the can do anything they want. I have exposed them to careers that are available to them.

The hardest part of my job is the lack of appreciation from senior staff. As hard as individuals work their is no empathy from management. It is difficult when you have to seemingly beg for time off that you are owed. That is probably the most frustrating thing for me. We should all be treated like we are the same but at times it seems that people are treated as though they are less than because they are not in administration. I think organizations would work better if we treated people equally.

I have enjoyed working with the staff in psychiatry. They respect me and I respect them and they are all focused on making the experience for the children the best it could be.

I have learned a lot from my colleagues and co-workers over the years here. A typical day at work consists of establishing and setting daily productivity measures and correcting follow-up errors for my staff, reviewing issues and researching solutions, identifying denial/edit trends and rectifying, reviewing emails, training staff, disciplining staff, assisting with patient complaints, reporting major issues to the Assistant Director, checking claims processing and transmissions. The hardest part of my job is getting through a set of assigned tasks without being interrupted by my own staff and other departments that are having various issues as well as providing feedback of issues to all parties outside of emails and meetings. The most enjoyable part of my job is learning something new and adapting to the changes to get reimbursed accurately. My direct supervisor is not the most cooperative or organized person in the department and she sometimes makes it hard to work with her to resolve issues with her management staff and department heads. However, once the tasks asked are completed timely and with accuracy she is usually a team player.

A typical day was what we called chasing cash, calling up patients and insurance companies including third party insurance companies to get as much payments in to furnish the bottom line of our portion of cliams. I learned that many patients do not understand the terms and conditions of their insurance coverage and does not understand who pays for what. Management had to keep up with constant meetings by the departments as the billing issues evolved, so that they would know what was going on as the changes accured in insurance and policies. I was fortunate to have worked with a bunch of people I loved, though all did not quite get along, I got along with everyone and enjoyed working with them, we were happy and productive. The hardest part of the job was reaching the patients on the second phone call, they would talk with you the first time, on the second occasion if it was a matter of payment, there would be the answering machine forever. The most enjoyable part of the job is when all your bills were sent out and you made the most money coming in and the boss say "Good Job" you feel (at least some one notices your efforts) and that's a good feeling.

Brookdale Hospital is a major hospital in the area and covers many zip codes. It covers almost every field of health from dental to human physiology. 

My shift in the ER was from 12-6 and from the moment I am put on my volunteer jacket, I am busy for all 6 hours. I learned how the mechanics of an ER works and how to keep a constant flow of patients going out with the many going in, refining how to prioritize work when there are many tasks at hand and I am the only volunteer on shift, and with the help of some doctors I learned about the treatments patients were receiving for the disease they were suffering from. 

My coworkers were very accommodating but very busy at all times and I would not always be able to get a strait answer or have time to repeat because I could not understand some accents.

The hardest part of the job was being able to approach someone who exhibits many symptoms that a non-medically trained person would normally stay away from but I overcame this before the first week.

The most enjoyable part of the job was being of so much benefit to the doctors, nurses, and patients. I was recognized from the ER to the head volunteer department  I was then used to help train the new volunteers.

A typical day at work is repetitive but still challenging. It is repetitive and challenging because I have been using the same skills in different situations daily. I have acquired strong communication and technological skills which I have been using on a daily basis at work. I have also learned to multitask. I have the ability to manage my workload. During my 25 years of working in the Health Care and Human service field, I have acquired a valuable workplace culture skill which is task-oriented. Working in the Health Care and Human service field require team collaboration, so a worker must have the ability to work well with one another. the hardest part of the job for me is not having experience or knowledgeable staff on my shift which I could seek help from if there is a problem that I cannot handle. Even though I am an experienced worker, I've been faced with challenges every day. When such occur I often seek help from someone who's in a higher bracket than I am.  I enjoy working collaboratively because I get a better insight of the patient and co-workers.
