A typical day at work for me would be working directly with patients and setting them up for surgery.  I assess the patients health history and based on findings I obtain labs and or EKG in the office.   I also educate the patient with and pre and post op instructions depending on the type of surgery they are having.  In this position I have become very comfortable and confident in my lab draws.  The group of co-workers that I work with work as a team and when help is needed were there to lend a hand to each other.  My direct supervisor is very easy to talk to and is always willing to take my opinion into consideration.  The hardest part about my job is the fact that on any given day I work alone.  I am a people person and would enjoy being around my co-workers and little more then what I currently am.  I am also used to working at a fast pace and on my feet a lot.  With my current position I do a lot of sitting and work at a slower pace.  What I do enjoy about my job is the time I get to spend with the patients educating them and answering questions about the surgery.

Like other places, the people put into management positions aren’t qualified and don’t care about their employees or patients. Being physician owned sounds nice, but they have hired such terrible people to run the business side of things that they are unintentionally in the hole financially. On the hospital OR side, we are frequently yelled at by our manager despite not provoking such interactions, and we don’t have the instruments we need or proper functioning sterilization equipment on a daily basis. Although governed by AORN, until recently most staff had not been following sterility protocol in the OR, including the manager, despite it being brought to their attention for months. Per management we are now under a culture of not being able to say no- meaning if a surgeon wants to add a case on at 4pm, they can. They can essentially work however late they want. This facility is a 10 hour, elective case orthopedic “hospital”. Anesthesia providers are consistently pushing through patients with ASA’s of 4, despite them not being appropriate for an elective only facility that does not have an ER or ICU.

OSS was known in the area for the outstanding patient experience from start to finish.  They even won several awards because of this.  During the last few years management changed their focus from patient satisfaction to making as much money as they can.  Unfortunately this went against my work ethic and forced me to start looking for something else.  I got to the point where I hated going to work each day.  My co-workers were miserable as well.  I also noticed that my co-workers attitudes changed as well.  I strongly believe if they keep this up they will be compared to the other big York, PA area hospital, known for their poor customer satisfaction.  Those customer satisfaction awards can disappear just as fast as they received them.  Unfortunately at this point I really don't think they care if they lose them, just a s long as they are making their money.

I typical day at work is registering patients for 7-11 doctors in a day. Usually about 200 patients in both morning and afternoon. We make sure that we have all correct demographic information. Enter correct all insurance information for billing and have any necessary documents signed. Since starting at OSS I have learned quite a lot. I think one area I succeeded in was customer service. I have learned how to handle any difficult issues. I believe management could use come improvement. I loved working with all of my coworkers. They always made the day enjoyable. Hardest part of the job would have been dealing with difficult issues, things that arise that should not arise because of no proper documentation. The most enjoyable part was I got to meet a lot of new people/patients. Also being a part of helping them receive treatment. It always starts at the front desk as to how a patient will rate his visit.

As an athletic trainer, my experience is much different than the clinical staff at OSS.  Due to the nature of the work, my schedule is largely determined by others (one of the downsides of the profession).  The culture at OSS is great, with employees who enjoy what they do and stakeholders who care about their employees.  For example, physicians and stakeholders took multiple pay reductions during the initial outbreak of COVID to ensure a maximum number of employees could continue working and earning a paycheck while other larger companies were forcing layoffs.  My AT colleagues and I were pulled out of our schools when sports came to a halt and given various roles to continue working.  I would highly recommend OSS to other ATs or any in the sports medicine/orthopedic fields.

I worked Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  I learned how to transcribe for at least half of the doctors at OSS Health.  Management was awesome and so there for you.  They truly cared and listened and worked with you so well.  My co-workers I only saw on department meeting days, but we were all in the same boat and they were so supportive and I could contact them any time I needed them during the work day or even after.  A great group of girls.  I don't think there was a hardest part of the job.  The best part of the job was just typing, doctors I could understand, getting a good wage and benefits for a job I loved--totally.

This company tries to sell itself on their customer service awards to perspective employees an current employees.  The problem with that is, from Management all the way down the line is not working at that company anymore.  They sell the fact of company owned by their own doctors.  Well let me tell you, if your not in the favorites clique you will not get the shifts.  Unkept promises an no one seems to know or care what is going on with the other person.  An the benefits are terrible, unless you go to doctors everyday you will never pay your deductible before the next year.  Overall no work life balance & terrible stress an pay not worth it. 

My job was enjoyable and flexible due to the ability to work from home. My direct supervisor/team leader was great, and even my Manager was awesome until she left. We had a great team, but things were always changing from day to day. Hard to keep up on policies and procedures at times. We also had a weekly quota. Upper management was horrible and disconnected from our department.  Upper management does not care about you. Almost our entire department was let go due to outsourcing with a 10 minute warning and a phone call stating your job was being eliminated. I enjoyed the people the most. The job itself was a bit stressful for me. 

My day begins with checking telephone messages, then calling those patients back. I then go through my surgeons schedules for the next few weeks and see if any of the paperwork is completed. If it is, I print everything off and put in the chart. I research the patient's medical history and retrieve records from their PCP or other medical facility to add into the chart. Then, if the patient has an extensive history, I have our anesthesiologist review the chart before handing it off to our PAT nurses. After my charts are complete, I call patients to schedule them for their preoperative appointments. 

I really enjoy all of my daily duties. My co-workers are wonderful. Our management team is always helpful.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is none, it’s a very clicky organization, the doctors are wonderful, however the staff sucks

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
That I spent thousands of dollars on going to school and they will hire people off the street and turn them into medical assistants.. And there is no room to grow

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
My best advice is don’t work there

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long exhausting and drama. You work long days and have to beg for a day off. You get a half hour lunch and if your a minute late someone will act like a 10 year old and tell on you
