PGA National Resort & Spa

I have been at PGA National for 6 months. I am a very hard worker, and am often quite frustrated by the laziness of my direct co-workers, which negatively impacts my own job performance. Management is largely to blame for this; there is a high turn-over rate throughout, which is unfortunately understandable. Lower-level employees also come and go like crazy. Pay is minimal so there is not much incentive to tolerate the environment. 

If you are good at your job, there is plenty of opportunity for advancement, but in my experience, managers have warned me about other employees in outlets I'm interested in... though I appreciate this, I do find it to be slightly unprofessional and demonstrates poor managerial skills by their obvious implication that the people they've hired/not fired are inadequate. I acknowledge that it is difficult to find qualified workers, but finding replacements/enough staff doesn't seem to be a priority.

Overall, I feel that the resort has plenty of potential to succeed. I often read guest's reviews and it is disheartening to see connections between flaws I have observed myself and the things guests complain about. I'm not a manager, and am sure it is a very stressful position at this particular resort, but I feel that more could be done fairly easily (managers often discuss their personal lives and have no sense of urgency).

This job might have been good a few years ago but my experience working at PGA national from the top down was a horrible experience. Communication is seriously lacking, I swear the only time I ever spoke to my manager after I got hired was when I walked in to his office to give him my 2 weeks, otherwise he was nonexistent. The courses I learned quickly if you don’t play either before or after the Honda Classic are in serious need of work, I can’t tell you how many upset guests and members I dealt with after they came in from playing. I can’t stress this enough but the members always seemed to be in a bad mood.  The amount of stress you deal with isn’t worth the pay, tips were seriously lacking even in season. Even my coworkers couldn’t provide a lift for the moral. Half were trapped there and complained constantly while the other half are aspiring golfers so they looked past the issues because they worked at “PGA National” and could golf 4 courses for free for practice. Most importantly I never really felt or had any sense of worth installed in me while I was there, felt just like another standard gear in the machine. All in all I would never recommend anyone to ever work there or at least on the course which is shame due to the name brand this place has. Also the pro shop is incredibly rude to the bag attendants as well when they call down for bags.

Health insurance packages start at $99 for UHC, they’re not even matching the 401k right now and furloughed 80% (or ore) of the staff.

If you chose to advance, they’ll do what they always do: make you take on more tasks without praise or pay raise.

They do a great job making you think you’re valued, but in terms of when it actually comes down to it, they’re the first to throw you under the bus.

● Overall
Entered working there with high hopes and goals for myself. Happy they took a chance on me but time and time again I found I was disappointed between the benefits not being upheld, management being not properly trained on how to deal with staff, and overall childish behavior from the top down. Overall a toxic work environment. They make you think YOU need them, not the other way around.

The employees appreciate what you do for them. They love when you show them that you care about their department and what has to be repaired or replaced. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Department heads not working together for the good of the company making goals and tasks a bit more complicated at times. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Fellow employees are nice and can be helpful. Golf seems to be the resorts main focus apart from other aspects of physical upkeeping.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Punch the clock, read the daily for the day. Check the schedule to see who's in, turn on my pager and listen for calls or incidents.
Mainly from the kitchen, front desk or housekeeping.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is no best part. The HR department cares nothing for the employees.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everyone is out for themselves. There is no team work in any department.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment behind the scenes is deplorable. There is mold everywhere. There was a dead cat in the ceiling for MONTHS.  The stench was horrendous. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Park far from the office. Walk in, no one greets you. 
You do not get any breaks. There is an enormous amount of pressure everyday to complete tasks. There is no appreciation. The pay is terrible. The leadership is non existent.

I loved working at this company. There was always events and parties going on that we would help coordinate and prepare bills for. My daily routine consisted of maintaining my monthly groups for upcoming events or groups that would be staying at the hotel. I would manage the account from setting it up to, preparing and working with clients while they were at the resort and finally submitting the final invoice with details and copies to verify all charges. I would also assist with collections on my accounts, take incoming calls regarding my accounts and assisted with other clerical and administrative duties.

I applied to PGA National thinking it would be a good place to start a career in the golf business. And although I was able to get myself out of there to a better position at another place, I did not enjoy my time at PGA. It was stressful, the members are always unhappy because the hotel guests take away from the "country club" feel- something that comes with being a member at a resort course but let's not get started on that. Then the hotel guests, some are nice and well worth your time and effort. But the nasty ones that think they own the place because they "spent a lot of money." Management is always changing as PGA can't seem to hold on to their employees. All the good ones leave.

Handling lots of high end, high demanding clienteles and lots of tight event flips

The work environment was amazing and the culture speaks high end

my typical day was mostly busy, lots of projects and productive. attending several meetings or meeting with clients, writing work flow schedule and reading and filling event orders and event diagram,

What is the best part of working at the company?
Playing complimentary golf at The Champion Golf Course, and working as a team to make the guests and members experience something they have never felt before.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When we are short staffed, because certain people didn't show up for work, and its a very busy day.

Fantastic when everyone works together and does their fair share.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In season it is non stop all day long rain or shine and the offseason is the exact opposite.

Management never knew what was going on, so never relayed it to the staff. Hours for places in the resort always inconsistent. No food options past 10pm in a HOTEL. Constantly apologizing to guests for things out of our control. Management would hire friends and pay them more hourly than everyone else and let them do as they pleased. Used the staff during slow season and renovations to prepare the resort, then fired people or demoted them once it was actually worth working for the place. Management also accused of some dirty things and was to no surprise swept under the rug. I could go on for days, don’t waste your sanity.
