PRN gave me 2 good years as an EMT that I learned invaluable experience in. My ending at the company was undesirable.

The Typical work day usually ranged from 2 - 4 calls consistently a day all across LA County. One minute you could be up in Santa Clarita and the next heading down to Long Beach. You will go all over. Be sure to pack a lunch and have your phone on you for local restaurants in the area or for the nearest 7-11 or gas station. Food can be scarce and for night shift, always bring a caffeinated beverage. Nights are brutal for those who aren't used to them.

The skills I learned at the job are invaluable. I learned Patient Contact skills, how to talk to Patients, Gurney Operations, and how to work with Fire during 911 calls. I also met some amazing people who I was proud to call my co-workers and even some my partners. However there are some who don't share my view and will try to actively derail you and ruin your time there. Be wary of some who are frowned upon by most of the  other employees. 

Your Field Managers are the best people to go to for questions aside from your partners as a brand new EMT. They are willing to help you by answering questions you may have and are willing to workout problems with you. They really appreciate you showing initiative in the field or if you're on half crew, finding them and asking them if they need help. Do not trust HR, they are not your friends. 

The culture is very family and partner oriented. Your partner out there is your lifeline. Put your trust in them to do their job and to help you along the way and you will do just fine. Everybody's in the suck together and we all are there because we want to be there to help others. If you are a go-getter and really show your knowledge and skills as well as have a great attitude, you will go very far in the company and people will really enjoy working with you. EMS is a tight family. EMT's and Paramedics are all in this together. Don't be that person who disrupts that work flow or energy. Especially if you have a problem with a co-worker. Work it out with your partners first.

The hardest part of the job is the Bariatric calls. You are going to be lifting very heavy people. So if you can't lift your weight around, then this is NOT the job for you. Make sure you can throw your weight around and lift heavier then your body weight to be successful here. About 80% of your patient contacts, if not more, will be people who have mobility issues or who can't move at all without maximum assistance. I'll say it again: If you can not lift, you will not last in this line of work. Make sure you can lift and move with weight.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the smiles and patients who bring you up. My fondest experiences were actually with Patients in the back who I would talk to. They can really brighten up your day and mood at times. Don't ever discount your patients. Give them your all and you will find that there are a lot of kind hearted and wonderful people out there. If you make their day that much better, it will go a long way into making you feel like you're really making a difference in peoples lives. It's the best feeling in the world knowing you're actually helping the people who you transport either back home, to a facility, or to the hospital.

I used to work the graveyard shift, a typical day at work included to drive all over LA County and other neighbor counties. Some of the dispatchers were not suited for the position since they did not know how to manage their resources. For example, if you were posted at Van Nuys they send you to post at East LA and as soon you have arrived to East LA they requested you to go back to Northridge to pick a patient. 

Some dispatchers did not respect your check out time, even if they had personnel that had just checked in they will required the crews that are leaving to pick an extra call. 

I learned that it was the best paid and the best place to work in LA County, it what was scary if you think how will be working in other places. I learned you could not trust management because they will just answer "it is what it is." On my first annual performance review I got a 30 cents rise because I had a lot of tardy points and absences due to family issues. The next year I did my best to fix it, my supervisor praised my performance and said I will receive the maximum rise possible... I got a 20 cents rise. 

Poor management at the time I was there. They changed the Human Resources manager about four times in a year. They really did not care about their personnel work conditions and they act as if the field personnel were inferiors. 

My co-workers were the best part of the job. A lot of high committed EMT, Paramedics, Nurses, of course there were some poor attitudes supervisors and EMT's that praised the poor decisions of the Operations Director at the time. 

The graveyard shift was the hardest. There were some dispatchers that just make your shift miserable and there were some that really understood how to be efficient.  

Better you like to drive, because this job include a lot of driving without transporting any patient. 

To be fair, I worked there from 2012 to 2014, since then I have heard the company was bought by another player so, somethings can possibly changed overtime.

Having worked at this company for a couple of years now I've seen many people come and go. First few months were great but shortly after the company was sold to an investment firm it feels as if we are now known only as Medics, Nurse or EMT. No personal feel whatsoever, your just another medic nurse or EMT to them. (And believe me, they come and go) Don't believe the bogus pictures portrayed on the website. Most of those pictures are of management, ever so happy because while field staff breaks their backs they sit in offices ranking in the big bucks. Beginning shift you'll get a call at least an hour + drive away, lucky if theirs no traffic. Show up to an "immediate" call only to find a patient who has no medical necessity whatsoever to be transported from the hospital to her home by ambulance other than not being able to find a ride home. If one decides to not run a call he/she will be fired same day. PRN is an at-will company who does not need to have legitimate reasons to fire anyone. In the time I've spent their we can recall of attests two separate law suites against PRN involving no lunches. Management is completely aware of this and can care less. 
New hires are receiving sign on bonuses while the staff that has already shown their loyalty to this company won't even get a simple pat on the back. Xmas time is in a few days, 99% sure their won't be any bonuses even though they spend millions on useless equipment.

Lots of EMTs and paramedics come and go within 3 to 6 months. Long working hours. Dispatchers hold EMTs and paramedics past their off time. Dispatchers will give you a call an hour to an hour and a half before your off time which results in mandatory overtime. Dispatchers assign first lunch break  6-7 hours after start of shift. Second lunch is giver towards last 30 minutes of your shift. Lots of EMTs that only want to drive and want to make NO patient contact. Lots of EMTs who don’t want to attend. Call bonuses are taxed. Full time employees are NOT able to drop down to part time status. Field Training Officers are demeaning towards new hires in an attempt to “break in” new hires. No respect from convalescent nurses.  Starting pay is minimum wage. Low company morale.

Decent IFT company with various start times. Full time employees get locked in to full time schedules with no flexibility to work around your school schedule if you’re going to school. No shift bid program as promised. Veteran EMTs and paramedics are unappreciated. Hours get cut upon company needs. Employees start times get moved earlier or later upon company needs without proper notice. 

If you’re looking for steady full time hours or part time hours, then find employment elsewhere. They’ve been cutting EMT/paramedic hours short because call volume is low. Often times crews get sent home after 3 hours into their shift because of low call volume. If your partner calls out sick, management will send you home. Many EMTs and paramedics come and go within 1-6 months. No option of staying to get your hours.
There’s a few burnt out salty Field Training Officers. Only one 30 min lunch your entire 8, 10, or 11 hour shift. Company morale is low and plummeting. Half the ambulances have bad AC and only blow air that’s 2-3 degrees cooler than the outside air. They have a shift bid program which puts EMTs and paramedics with seniority on the top of the list and new hires at the bottom making it difficult for new hires to get a schedule that fits their needs.

Note: This review is from 2005-2008. I can only hope the conditions have improved!

This company has been investigated for medicare fraud. During this time they were mainly a dialysis run BLS company. They shifted into ALS/Medic runs and quickly found themselves overwhelmed or under-utilized; both problematic. They shifted to contracting with Kaiser.

During this time:
management was under educated on CA labor laws. Many EMT indiscretions occurred: regular theft from hospitals to stock rigs, unnecessary code 3 runs, and extracurricular activities in the rigs on down-time.
Shift end times were not consistent. Dispatchers were allowed to dispatch a 3 hour call even if unit was scheduled to be off in 30 minutes.

The company still around after selling themselves to another one but sinrce I joined I started to see and notice lots of high turnover. 

The Human Resources quit while I was in my orientation week. Later on other people quit and even the director who was in charge of billing and collections de apartment quit and oh course my department manager who always was on the internet surfing for her own pleasure or perhaps looking for the next job because the stress and pressure she was having was making her very old. 

They also lay off good hard working people in the department oh course there are some employees who just like to socialize and did not do their job.

Its hilarious that the company places that 8 hour shifts are possible here. You will have a choice in what area you are stationed out of. You will NOT have control of your schedule team members will change periodically, it will be hard to keep your rhythm going when team members aka emts change frequently. 
You will NOT be given respect as far as schedule is concerned. If you are supposed to be off work by 3pm, you will not be. Ever. It does not matter your reason.
Prepare to have dispatchers and everyone else that is NOT a nurse question your decisions. You will be wrong when you make a decision. All the time. 
HR was completely toxic, they will not help you when you have questions but WILL find you quickly for other things


99% of your coworkers are great people and are usually easy to get along with. Most equipment is newer/decent, but operations still maintains older equipment (like old-old, oldest of all of our other IFT counterparts) that occasionally causes problems (e.g. vehicles won’t start, broken/missing equipment). Pay is on the higher end for the job title. Scheduling is iffy, especially now June 2025 due to the incredible amount of new hires that keep coming in each week (seemingly). Usually capped at 30-40 hrs a week, very rarely will you get approved by scheduling for OT. Field/Operations Managers are generally  nice and helpful when you need them.
