A typical day at PCLI is fast paced and detail oriented, with a strong focus on patient care and supporting providers. Technicians are expected to manage many clinical responsibilities, often with minimal oversight or structure, which can be both empowering and overwhelming.

I learned a great deal about ophthalmology and surgical care. Far more than I anticipated when I started. The role pushed me to grow clinically and professionally. However, the learning curve was steep due to the lack of a formal training process for techs, which made the first year especially challenging and frustrating. 

Management varies by location. In some offices, local managers and leads are supportive and present. However, upper management and corporate leadership often feel disconnected from the realities on the ground. Concerns about provider performance or employee fit are not always addressed effectively, leading to burnout among more experienced staff.

The culture depends heavily on location and which doctors are on site. When the team is cohesive, the environment is friendly, collaborative, and respectful. On difficult days, lack of structure and accountability can strain morale.

The responsibility placed on techs is significant, especially considering there is no standardized training and limited corporate support. It can feel stressful to be held accountable for high stakes clinical work while still learning on the job. It’s also concerning they do not certify their techs, because they’re not willing to increase wages. 

The most enjoyable part of the job:
The most rewarding part of my time at PCLI was how much I learned and the strong friendships I made. I had the privilege of working alongside skilled and compassionate providers, and that made the experience worthwhile despite the challenges.

I absolutely loved working for the Vancouver PCLI. The manager is caring and hands on as well as an excellent leader. Not a micromanager at all!!!! Most of the doctors I encountered were friendly and enjoyable to work with. My coworkers became more like friends. I cherish my time with them all. The work can be demanding and difficult at times but I never once felt unsupported. Wonderful group of people. Personally I felt the work/life balance was perfect. I don’t remember once being turned down for time off needed even at times when something in my personal life would come up mid shift. Everyone always seemed to have everyone’s back.  I miss it very much. Even the crazy patients. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good pay. They genuinely are concerned about their employees and patients.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
My position is part time and I don’t always get enough hours to make ends meet.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
We are focused on patient care. The environment is calming. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Write a transportation schedule, calling patients, verifying pick up location and time. Cleaning vehicles and picking up patients.

I learned how to use several Medical computer programs, and what is was like to work with people that make your job harder than it needed to be. If you allow employees at Pacific Cataract and Laser to pile their work on you they will and not think twice about it. Then if the work doesn't get done they will make sure that you are to blame and not themselves. You have to be careful who you become friends with at PCLI. The management there protects the wrong people and not the people that are hard working and do what they are suppose to do to earn that paycheck.

Depending on the position, your job can be extremely rewarding.  The best part is the staff that you work with become good friends.  But administration is calculating,  manipulative and hypocritical.  It can be brutal and extremely stressful in certain positions.  They make it very clear that everyone is disposable.   Nepotism is practiced.  There is an obvious divide between upper management and staff.

During this work experience I learned so many new things. I truly discovered how a team system works. And when working together, how smoothly the system would flow. The only thing the might be a slight negative to some people was that, due to the fact that it is a system….it ends up feeling more robotic and repetitive. Because of that though, it made it easier to learn and allow the team to work better together and more smoothly.

When you are hired you are introduced to all departments w ith a warm welcome.  Everyone clocks in and out for their day. Very enjoyable team atmosphere! I learned data entry!  I also learned scanning and auditing insurance and other documents... which maybe one might not say hardest... but boring at times, but with that said most enjoyable is meeting my goals of the day doing these jobs.

Workload as a driver had its ups and downs but for the most part was consistent. There was a lot of long trips involved with the driving position including several trips to place like Council, ID or even as far as Baker City, OR on occasion but the pay was right and they treated me decently. The Front Desk/ Reception work was interesting to say the least but I learned a lot about insurance companies and how they process claims and working with the patients was always my favorite

Working until 1pm on Fridays,  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Work overload,  unrealistic expectations.  And unfairness of inside family connections. Office clicks.

Fake and unrealistic expectations

Busy busy busy. Again unrealistic expectations

I loved working with my team and have the utmost respect for the company and what it stands for- great mission and values. Sadly there’s not a whole lot of room for career growth, so when life pushed me in a different career direction, I reluctantly resigned in tears for how much I loved working here. I one hundred percent recommend working for this company.
