I rated this place a 3/5 simply because I LOVE the nursing and floor staff which whom I got to work with. Work/life balance is also good in the sense that we don't take any work home nor do we answer any calls once we have clocked out. HOWEVER, sometimes we do have to work weekends to be able to catch up (that is compensated through getting paid OT). There is little to no opportunity for growth within this hospital given that the next position is being the Social Service Director. You can however, request to be moved to the Outpatient program across the street if a position becomes available and it gets approved by your current director. Also, if you are trying to get hours towards your license (LMFT or LCSW), you will only get your 2 hours of group supervision (not paid for as this is done after hours) and it will be very difficult to get individual hours. This hospital has great potential for growth and upper management definitely has some areas they need to work on with being more supportive towards their staff members. Although this is a stressful environment to work in due to having strict deadlines on tasks and the high acuity of the patients, this is also a great learning experience if being a hospital social worker is your long-term goal.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The stress at this hospital is related to the lack of training, clear direction and general oversite. The continuous change is Executive and Directorial positions provide an ever changing set of goals. In most cases they continued to be reactive to what their corporate handlers demands. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment of this place is much like high school. If you are not with the "in crowd" you are treated less than, placated and talked down too. If you stand up for yourself you become a threat to their authority and a reason is found to get rid of you. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Starts with being provided no direction or training on the goals that they want you to achieve.  You are however provided the consequences if the job is not completed. Daily or weekly changes are made that adversely affect business and yet the ones making the decision are never at fault.

Very poor management. CEO is only concerned with money-even at expense of employee/patient safety. Way understaffed. Care to patients not priority. Money is only priority. Most staff is not properly trained. You will have to work weekends and late into the evening without pay just to get with done. If you try to bring up issues, you will be deemed a trouble maker or get fired. CEO is very convinced she is the most amazing person on earth. But most people who work with her think she belongs in the hospital herself. She is totally unrealistic about how much time it takes to manage patients and charting etc. Only concerned with making money. If you cross her, or if she even thinks you disagree with her, you will be gone. Locked unit is totally unsafe for staff and patients. Totally understaffed. Again, CEO could care less as long as it makes money. Management team have their favorites and bend the rules for them as they like.

I worked here for about a year and honestly most of the staff were really good people, good environment, all types of different backgrounds. But unfortunately there were some issues with favoritism. I loved our director of the department, she was very understanding, pushed everyone to be better, always had a good attitude no mater the situation, great person. Management on the other hand was not so great. Because of the close community they have there, rumors spread worse than wildfire and I had backlash because of it. Management made it obvious to treat me differently from others and always had poor attitude towards me. They were the reason I left. Just be careful on who you interact with

The ceo at time was greedy buying things unnecessary for company

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Upon arrival open front door , turn on computer type up doctors patient lists prepare for daily discharges make charts run copies of charts for binders admit and discharge patients get fedex pages ready for pick up sort mail answer phones.

Social Work dept. is overworked, and  constantly losing staff due to high turnover; caused by poor management. Starting from the CEO, HR, to the director, they want you to do more with less, do unethical things such as discharge a confused pt “to self,” or put a confused pt in an uber. The negative  culture doesn’t change, and employees are demeaned & work in unpleasant environment. The only good thing is that most employees are there to help the patients and show compassion to this population. 

Management needs to be checked in as patients.  CEO walks on water just ask her, she uses the most profane language I have heard from nearly anyone. This CEO will drive around and look for homeless  people buys them and her beer and drink with them in the park or sidewalk and talks with them about the clean and sober environment Pacific Grove has to offer them!
Insanity!  And it only gets better. If you have experience then stay away. If your new at the job get your experience and move on.

CEO cares only about making money and filling beds. He is all about the business aspect and cares nothing for the patients and their experience. Almost every patient room has holes in the wall,ceiling or floor. Patients toilets are always getting clogged (and not from patients’ doing). There is no 24hour housekeeping or maintenance. Mental health workers are told they are to use the plunger for patients clogged toilets. The showers also get clogged and the Mental Health workers are the ones that have to clean them.

Working at Pacific Grove Hospital as a social worker has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The supportive leadership, including the CEO and CNO, fosters a positive and collaborative environment. The hospital's commitment to patient well-being is inspiring, making it a fulfilling place to contribute as a social worker. I appreciate the meaningful work we do here.

Majority of staff are great and truly care about patients.  As previous reviews have stated, Executive Team is the problem.  However because they make money nothing will be done to change the culture of threats and intimidation that the CEO has created and wants maintained.  As long as you kiss the right feet and do not bring up issues or laws/rules that are broken you will remain.  Otherwise you will not last.
