What is the best part of working at the company?

Always rushing because of heavy patient load. Feeling under pressure to work faster from supervisors

I worked in mother baby at night. Friendly coworkers, always under time pressure with a four mother, four baby assignment

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Hear patient report from several nurses, see my patients and assess their needs, get vital signs on mothers and babies.  Get meds for patients ready. Answer their call light and help with breastfeeding. Do initial charting. Give pain meds as needed. Perform patient teaching. Perform car seat challenge if applicable. Assist with newborn screening tests. Give immunizations to mom and baby as required. Chart these interventions. Take 30 minute lunch if possible. Vital signs and glucose screening again at midnight. Do more immunizations and assist with breastfeeding. Medications, charting. Assist patients up after c section, teach peri care and pad change. Monitor infant feedings. Do glucose screening on infants (and some mothers) as required. Chart these interventions. Vital signs at 4am, medications and assistance with breastfeeding, more patient teaching. May perform discharge planning early in shift, then may receive two more patients. Wound care as needed for c/s patients. Chart these interventions . During the shift, may need to medicate pts for pain and intervene if baby in respiratory distress, or choking. Give change of shift report. Try to leave by 7:30 am!

The radiology dept. is fairly close to a train wreck as far as management is concerned.  It's all about gossip, favoritism, brown nosing and lets not forget lying and back stabbing.  There is also regular arguing and occasional immature drama.  If you just want to do your job well and not be involved with any of the above, you are looked at as the 'bad guy'.  It's actually quite pathetic.  This is not what work should be about.  However, the majority of my co-workers agreed with the above and they were mostly great people to work with.  Of course there is always a couple who are lazy and don't pull their own weight so to speak, but they won't get written up or fired because its a union hospital and management doesn't care.  In fact, there is one in particular that treats the patients horribly and talks down to them in a loud voice.  He has had numerous patient complaints and yet nothing is done about it.  They also rarely rotate us in different areas such as, Fluoro, OR, ER, portables, etc. because the favorites get priority.
I'll also briefly mention that the Transport team is lazy and poorly managed as well and some of the clique's in the OR are amazingly rude. 
The hardest part of the job is dealing with management and the best part of the job is being left alone by them,  enjoying my co-workers company and of course, helping the patients.  I've learned that I would NEVER work at this hospital again no matter how much they paid me because peace of mind to me is much more important than the money.  I thank my lucky stars every day that I found another job in this economy where I'm happy.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The Palomar Health Foundation provides many opportunities for social activities and other employee related rewards and recognitions throughout the year.  Last year there was a raffle for a new car giveaway.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The Board of Directors, the C-Suite, and Senior Leaders and Managers are constantly in flux.  Reorganizations happen almost every 6 months.  BOD has one driver who influences others so there is no true vote, just unilateral decision making.  This creates chaos and crisis and an unstable work environment where people are stressed out, uncertain of the future.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Culture has cliques and favoritism.  Some resources have been employed for decades and long after age of normal retirement.  No new talent or creative ideas are embraced.  Some resources have been in the role a long time and do not grow or keep up with people, process, or technology industry improvements or changes.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy and stressful. Requires a lot of multi-tasking, due to crisis management, and ad-hoc work prioritization of workload.  95% of resources are currently remote.

There is a lot of favoritism in the ER. The same nurses are always placed in the same role. If you are not part of the cool kids club you do not get to serve in various roles. They do not tell you when you are hired that you will not be a trauma RN although it is a trauma center. Every RN should rotate and be able to fulfill this role. Only a select few get this job and it is impossible to be trained and placed in this role unless you are buddies with management. They put new grad nurses in roles that require more experience instead of using more experienced nurses just because they are more hip, younger and popular.  Assignments are based on popularity not experience and skill. Very unfair work environment in the ED. No opportunity to grow and and use your skills and experience unless the management team likes you.  Nurses are consistently being put in unsafe situations due to staffing and skill set.  Unfair work environment bottom line. All nurses should be able to perform all roles and assignments should not be based on popularity! 

In a typical day at the hospital, I would round on patients, finding out their needs, and either caring for those needs myself, or relaying the information to the RN.  For example, I would give patients bed baths or showers, change their bedding, help them with toileting, feed them, take their vital signs, and ambulate or discharge patients.  I would help CNA's reposition them.  Someitmes I would help nurses with procedures, or answer the phone at the nurse's station.
     The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with patients and staff.  The hardest part of the job is not being able to help patients more.
     I have enjoyed working with coworkers, when the opportunity arises.  I feel I've improved my patient care skills, and my ability to communicate with patients and staff, as a result of working at the hospital.  I was recently chosen to be part of a committee to research improved patient care at the hospital.

The entire organization is understaffed. From HR to clinical staff, and all departments in between.  The lack of staff has become unsafe for both patients and employees. The hourly based staff are underpaid in comparison to most other area hospitals.  Many are leaving due to this lack of compensation. While management won't roll up sleeves to help the staff, they are being promoted?  Its insulting to the clinicians who are overworked and under paid.   The directors are in a 7 month long disagreement with the union to sign a new contract.  No consideration for the hardworking staff members.

I enjoyed my time as an intern for the Pathmaker internship. I learned a lot about the ins and outs of a hospital environment from the friendly staff that were generous enough to teach the interns aside from their daily routines. I worked in three different rotations starting with MED/SURG/TELE, then ICU/IMC, and ending with the Birth center. This internship helped me learn how to juggle different tasks and have better bed side manner. Also to have more confidence when interacting with patients and realizing that even the littlest of tasks make a big difference in the well being/mood of the patient. This internship was very meaningful to me in particular because I was able to use my training to help my mother (who was diagnosed with stomach cancer) as she was bed ridden at home. The hardest part of the internship was observing patients that were in critical condition. the most enjoyable part of the internship was knowing that I made a difference in a patients experience at the hospital.

Patient care does not seem to be suffering until they do not have enough RNs on the floor to take care of patients. Often charge nurses are frantically calling a list of nurses on their day off begging for them to come in because there are not enough nurses on the floor. What is suffering terribly is the supportive culture. RN frustration is leading to bullying and gossip, plans to strike or leave to other hospitals, and an overall toxic place to work as a nurse. There are many lay offs taking place but, leadership wastes time and money on a “Spirit Summit” instead of figuring out how to keep employees. New nurses or nurses looking to advance; I’d say do not seek to grow your career here. For those with thick skin who just need a job, There are plenty of openings here for you.

Worked as an intern and obtained plentiful clinical experience working hands-on with patients and connecting with professionals in the field of medicine. Worked on tasks such as feeding, transferring, discharging, and assisting patients in various activities. Hope to reach the surgical level in which I will gain experience in the operating rooms.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working for Palomar health has been one of the best jobs I've had in my career. My only complaint is the high turnover rate and yearly anxiety of wondering if I  will be layed off.

Job stability is always a concern around summer time.
