Pappas Bros. Steakhouse

Pappas Bros Steakhouse leaves a lot to be desired as an employee. As a server you are expected to do the job of at least 3–4 different people at once while still maintaining a certain level of service. You are given what they like to call “server assistants” although they are really just glorified Bussers whom are mostly kids who don’t care enough to do the basics like refill water and reset tables. On top of that, expect to tip out 5.85% of your SALES not tips, SALES. So if you get undertipped on one of your three tables you e had out of the whole night, management will literally do NOTHING about it and you still need to tip out on that table. I could go on and on but lastly and most importantly… THE SIDEWORK! Oh lord the side work. Get ready to be there an extra two hours after your last table leaves doing and endless amount of sidework. Makes you wonder why the tip out is so high when you are expected to do everything. Please, do yourself a favor if you’re looking for your next “fine dining” server job. Pappas is anything but! 

so I started working at Pappas at the tender age of 21, it was referred to me by my then and now Current colleague. I wanted to make more money and balance school as she did. I enjoyed working at Pappas and the culture very much starting out as runner. As the years passed I went from runner, to phones, to greeter, to lead boards. You can move up in your position as host. This is a gread starter job if you love customer service and or working towards a degree or any other advancement in life. management was fun when I started but as you know the restaurant industry has a high turn over rate. as the years passed so did staff including management. now in 2019 I'm still with the company and I am feeling as though I reached my peek in the hostess position as I should being there for 7 years.

The culture works for a reason.
Teamwork is AMAZING!! The training is hard but thorough. Gives you what you need to be in this caliber of a Steakhouse. Once out of training you will continually get information and education to help you sell.
Money can be awesome if you use the tools at your disposal, get the most out of training and take the education seriously.
Management fair for the most part. You get out of it what you put in to it and they notice what you give.
Advancement opportunities are there but slower than some. So much of staff stays because it's a great opportunity for money and a great place to work. Especially compared to other restaurants.
Hard, face paced environment on busy nights but financially worth it.
Business hours aren't bad, nights only and no Sundays.

A typical day for me would be just to greet all guest that come into the establishment and show them to the assigned table. I also cleaned and maintained the restrooms and my work space. My managers were awesome and helped me a lot. They were very patient with me and handled any work related issues i had accordingly. My co-workers were okay, i got along with everyone pretty well. The hardest part of my job was trying to make everyone happy. No guest is the same so i always made it my personal goal to provide the perfect table and an excellent dining experience. The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to interact with different people everyday. I am a people person so i loved seeing all the new faces and dealing with the different personalities.

definition of toxicity, typical hierarchical workplace where some have some preferences and privileges while others are at the bottom. Managers don’t care about their employees(only care about their favorites puppets who bring the most money to the table) although they pretend they do. All words no action, management want improvement but doesn’t take action to do so. Hunger games, employees can’t really eat but it depends on where you land on the hierarchy. (top servers can eat but if you at the bottom you will get in trouble) There is a lot of managers but zero true leaders. 

The only good things is that you’ll meet some nice co workers in there. You’ll expect more from such place.

For starters training takes almost 2 months and the entire time you’re making minimum wage with bi weekly pay. They do not feed anyone except the closer for the evening even though they throw away leftover food. Managers have admitted that they seat certain people with certain servers which if you’re new is horrible because you won’t make any money. If you try to talk to them about it they’ll deflect and somehow the blame ends back up on you. They can lie and say they don’t decide where people sit but they absolutely do. Tenured lazy servers are treated very well here.  Tip out is awful wouldn’t be so bad if the people who were supposed to help actually did. Go work somewhere else, this place is a waste of time.

Working here was fun and not so fun it’s a job that pays decent and for what it’s worth you can’t complain it’s life, made lots of friends, seen many celebrities walk in and eat, some shifts were easy and fun other were hard and stressful pretty much a little bit of both. Worked in the downtown location so your hours and workload is based off what’s going on in downtown. Restaurant never open in the day so you have your whole day to yourself and at night you work your hours from 4-5pm til you’re finished. Cons of working here we’re paying for parking and not just that but also trying to find parking, lack of communication amongst management.

There are alot of policies and the management follows them to a tee to make sure everything runs smoothly. If you can't work with the policies then you will get the boot. There are free meals every day but it is usually chicken fingers or eggrolls, not something you would expect from a leading restaurant company of Texas.

Pappas steakhouse is competitive and fast paced. The employees there are friendly and helpful at times. We have served  over 800 guests in one night and having to be detail oriented with each plate made it difficult but rewarding when guests continued to compliment everyone and their service. The most enjoyable part of the job was when we did well sometimes the managers would reward us with food or tickets to win prizes.

If you are strictly in the restaurant business for the quality of life then this is the place for you. It's very easy to make money there without having to work a lot of hours. There are no viable benefits available to hourly employees other than a flexible schedule. The training is extensive and the standards are very high. If you know that going in and are able to deal with those things you will do fine working there.
