Parrish Medical Center

Parrish is a great place to work for a few years to gain initial experiences. Don't expect cost of living/ merit raises thereafter. This lack of investment into care partners is viewed as secondary priority with it's administration and they lose good care partners because of it. They mind their turnover rates, but not enough to stay competitive with other organizations in the region. It's location is unique, right by Nasa, so you can see rocket launches The culture is great, everyone is nice and they hold fun fundraisers such as raffles. The cafe has great freshly made food, although in recent months their options have remained stagnant since Sodexo has trouble finding cooks. There is no other places nearby to grab lunch, so it's either this or bring in your own lunches. 

The benefits are nice. They'll help pay for further education if approved, matching 403b retirement option, low health insurance, and about 20-30 pto days a year if you're fte. Management is not anything extraordinary. They do cover the bases in regards to your performance review and check-ins. In my opinion, the evaluations are bogus. They'll give you an average grade with some nice comments, but there wasn't any real evaluation. As long as your not obviously causing catastrophe, you must be doing well. No matter how eager you want to succeed or advance, they cannot really offer the resource.

Sometimes the collaboration falls apart and/or the priority often keeps getting pushed back.Procrastination exists in management. This organization is supervised with a consulting company that is known to cut jobs for financial reasons. Overall, The organization packs a punch for its size. It's very community oriented, but still makes it's name heard around the nation with its progressive care ideologies. Unfortunately, Parrish's winning pace has fell behind and is now overshadowed with it's poor scores shown publicly.

PMC management has removed an unreasonable amount of support staff in an effort to budget cut giving themselves raises.  This has affected patient safety causing multiple hidden sentinel events that are kept from the public.  They pride themselves on "patient safety" by attempting to remain "fall free" by placing alarms on beds not only for the confused (which is reasonable) but for the alert, oriented patients counting the number of falls as their "Safe Environment".   They're not disclosing the medication, diagnostic errors as part of their safety program.   They title their cardiovascular unit as "Med/Surg" in order to keep the Nurse/Patient ratio at 1:6 even though it's a PCU or aka a Progressive Care Unit which has the acuity just below an intensive care unit.  There are only three physician's in the hospital authorized to order a patient to a higher level of care, i.e. the ICU only after they lay eyes on that patient which is during their personal hours.  This leaves the floor nurse's the responsibility of maintaining the patient's stability all the while caring for five other patients.  The ER bays are not cleaned in between patients.  It's the nurses responsibility to wipe the beds down and hastily have another patient occupy the bed in order to get them up to the floors as quickly as possible regardless of their stability.  The Doctors are burned out.  The Nurses, CNAs, housekeepers, etc.are. ALL burned out working understaffed, especially at night.  New management staff are terminating the higher paid employees in order to bring in new staff and new nurse graduates at a lower pay grade providing inexperienced medical care.  Someone needs to take a hard look at the inner workings of the hospital and its style of operation before anymore lives are lost to negligence.

Upper level administration claims that patient care is the most important mission to them but their actions are contradictary to this.  They have taken away an abundant amount of resources that can allow care partners to provide the quality care these patients deserve.  Patient to nurse ratio as well as patient to CNA ratio is unsafe and unrealistic.  Our lift team has been eliminated due to budget cuts and this was one of our most valuable resources as we are lifting and moving heavy and incapacitated patients daily but  they then spent 20,000 dollars on the cadillac of hospital beds for the ICU.  They eliminated the use of wipes all over the hospital because they were supposedly effecting the plumbing but will allow families to bring wipes in to their family members.  The washcloths that we are now forced to use on our patients are like sandpaper and that is a horrible and unsafe way to clean the bottoms of patients with bedsores or skin breakage.  It is an embarrassment to have to walk into the rooms where these families are there at there love ones bedside feeling as if they are not being cared for the way they should be.  Us lower level employees are the faces that they get to see and we are the ones that they vent their frustrations to, yet we are not allowed to dare explain ourselves because God forbid they know the truth that high level administration really only cares about one thing...money.  We receive emails staying that we need to be better and more attentive care partners.  How much better can we be when the essential resources have been taken from us?  In the last couple months PMC has lost 10+ Nurses due to dissatisfaction of their job.

Parrish is a glorified 210 bed clinic that proclaims to be a hospital that has “The Finest Healing Environment,” but it’s just a slogan. Care is horrible, it’s unsafe, and it’s not uncommon to hear medical staff (Care Partners) to do mistakes and the leadership to cover them up. Joint Commission is only shown what Parrish wants them to see and treats as gold just to make them feel relaxed. They are professionals in covering up the truth. 

The Community Board members is comprised of good people who are blinded by the EOC, that comprise as a good portion of the board. Of course they would be when it’s a “Community Hospital” trying to cover up their flaws and poor management style. They have good manager who can do great work, but the EOC treats them as puppets on a string. 

If we seriously want to see Parrish become what it once was to our community, then it’s time to remove higher level of the leadership and find professional and experienced people who don’t see Parrish patients as their personal income. Find people who will not run the organization as a business only, but rather a community based hospital. As a nurse, this is the perfect place to work so that you learn exactly what not to do to those patients. As physician, don’t mess up your hard earned reputation by adding Parrish to your resume. Most organizations, like Health First, Advent Health and others see this glorified clinic as a hospital that will soon cause another care partner or patient’s life, and will eventually close. Parrish EOC believes they are untouchable and only care about their reputation, nothing else. It all smoke and mirrors. 

Typical work day is filled with regular out patients, biopsies and procedures with ER stats, and add on's, and breast patients. 
I learned how to perform Para's, Thora's FNA's and Cores using ultrasound guidance with the reading radiologist. Scan breast patients, and take call. Management was very busy and wearing multiple hats, they were present but uninformed about the progress of the employees and did not offer a standard training and mentorship to confidently and adequately perform all the jobs requirements. Workplace culture is very busy and every man for themself. The hardest part of the job was setting up the biopsy trays to the radiologist liking, remembering what each one likes using for each procedure on top of the all the regular ultrasound exams. The most enjoyable part was the ultrasound staff the few girls that were staffed full time did there very best to train and equip the best they could while being extremely short handed and short staffed. If the department was better more adequately staffed I would have had a better training and work experience.     

Starts off as a decent place to work until they start to overwork you. Little to no training but expecting you to know everything.  On top of the little  to no training they expect you to then turn around and train other people.  Most of the coworkers are friendly but a lot are not.  Especially the higher up the chain they are. Insurance,  you can only use their doctors and hospital. Pediatric specialist are not offered in the first tier of insurance so expect to pay $300 or more out of pocket if your child needs a specialist even though Parrish does not offer any at the hospital. They are also not able to treat or keep any pediatric patients.  So you can expect to pay more out of pocket if your child needs a hospital stay. You'll also be stuck with the ambulance bill you'll get for your child to be transported to another hospital. Why? Because that's conveniently not covered. Not child friendly insurance. Not easy to advance unless you know people and they like you. Sad but true fact. 

I used to work at Parrish.  Parrish cannot keep good Echo techs on staff because they ...

*work you to death
*do not hire enough techs for the amount of work
*have a backwards way of doing things
*are very unprofessional
*are extremely unorganized
*don't appreciate the work you do & work you like a dog
*they prefer to only hire techs right out of school so they can pay the bare minimum per hour (even with experience, the pay is low)

 I would advise working elsewhere!!!! No one ever stays here. The turn over rate is very high at Parrish in the Echo dept.  Techs are always leaving for greener pastures, and they should. HUGE red flag!

I was warned about all these things before I started working there and I didn't listen.  I just want to return the favor to whomever is reading this.

Review: Disappointing Leadership Overshadows a Great Workplace

I had high hopes when I joined PMG, as the company overall offers a great work environment, talented teams, and promising opportunities. However, my experience was significantly impacted by the leadership style of the VP of Operations.

Unfortunately, this individual fosters a toxic environment characterized by authoritarian management and a lack of empathy or support for employees. Despite my passion and dedication, the VP’s approach made it difficult to see a future at the company. What could have been a fulfilling career path was ultimately derailed by poor leadership.

I caution anyone considering a position under this department to be aware of the cultural challenges stemming from the top. A toxic leader can negate all the positives a company has to offer — and sadly, that was my experience at PMG.

Parrish is one of those jobs where you may not like the job but you like the people you work with. Our new department manager is a hard working man who appears to genuinely care about his employees and has no problem sitting down with you discuss issues you have. For that I have nothing but respect and have taken advantage of his open door policy to discuss anything I felt didn’t make sense. We were able to squash many problems within the department with his ability to manage. 

That being said, you must be careful who you trust here. Once an issue gets out of the department, it becomes a big problem for the whole hospital. 

Overall, a good but not great place to work. But the culture being created at least in security department is getting better. 

If you are going to work here, be very careful about the staff and who you communicate with. The hospital demands security do a lot of tasks outside the scope of training, but when you do it  “wrong” you are held accountable even though you are not trained in certain situations.  Management of the department is a complete joke. They care little about there employees and more about there image. They are too focused on trying to become Law Enforcement  when all it is a security team. The team is a bunch of decent people who do care about the hospital but don’t have the backing. The job it self is actually really good and can teach someone a-lot about dealing with the public,  but the people at the top ruined it for me personally.
