Interesting work and fun travel opportunities. Fair compensation and great managers and supervisors.

For me personally it was being away from home at that particular juncture in my life

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environments changed frequently due to working different sites as the work required. This  made it interesting for me because I absolutely love working around steel, especially bridge fabrication and construction. There was a high level of autonomy  afforded me as long as my reports were accurate and on time. As long as I was on point with good reporting, my supervisors were happy and left me alone.  My manager and supervisors were professional and very helpful on the rare occasion that I needed guidance.  I absolutely loved that career opportunity  and hope to return to Pennoni once I can be in a better position to meet the travel requirements. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Travel and lots of it! I opted to commute 2 hours each way for a few assignments which was a bit of a challenge. Once on site it was the typical responsibilities of a CWI… observe and report.  Daily report writing is a must with photos attached. I kept my clients UTD of the work and reported any anomalies as needed.  There is no hand written reports with Pennoni so having good computer skills is a necessity. Pennoni is great about supplying good equipment such as tools, computer, office equipment and PPE as needed.  A typical day for me was to keep watch of the work and ensured that code requirements were being respected, kept track of the work and reported the progress to my clients. I ensured that welders were compliant and respected the WPS’s. I also provide QA for material coatings ranging from thermal spray coatings, galvanizing and spray coatings such as zinc and epoxy.  
As I mentioned before, I hope to someday return to Pennoni because it was such a great career opportunity . I can recommend this company to anyone who likes to travel and can be away from home for extended periods at times.

The Baltimore office was full of great people who made you feel like part of a team. But, enough is enough, there is a reason (aside from Covid-19) the office barely has any employees now.  It all started in the middle of 2019 when when we started losing money hand over fist because of the inflexible business model. So, no matter what kind of B.S sales pitch they sell you to get you in the door its become a terrible and stifling work environment . We even had a coworker pass away from the pandemic, so my boss wrote a eulogy for the company newsletter and they wouldn't print it because it would incite panic? Come on, the guy worked there for like 15 years. 
 The Philadelphia office has all sorts of lavish party's and bonuses but then new corporate objectives came down to the satellite offices taking away any spending and overtime. Slowey we lost all of our little perks, you know the silly stuff that made it a great place to work. They turned a dream job with the best boss I have ever had, into a freaking nightmare. We had to start taking up collections for things like getting someone a birthday cake while they (Philadelphia) blew money hand over fist.
The first to go were the millennials who loved the job because of the flex hours but now its gotten to the point that even our VP of operations is leaving. Too bad, it had a lot of very cool things about it when I started.  

No organization in this office, files and drawings strewn ALL around, and the worst part was seeing the filth on floors day in and day out. The principle was more concerned with paper costs and turning out lights to save electricity when he had about $100,000 going out the front door buying an engineering stamp. The principle also just indiscriminately left the office at any time and I'd like to have a nickel for every employee who came over wondering where he was. After an extended weekend I had to go in on Tuesday and literally clean all of the trash out of the men's room that had accumulated the week before. And, the engineers were allowed to bring their prejudice to the workplace. Working there was a life lesson for me because I became much more sensitive to prejudice in work and in life.

Solid company with good benefits. Managers are personal and great people. The company places a big emphasis on technology by using up to date programs, methods, and staying up to date on industry standards. It is a great company to work for if you want to stay in an area where they already have an office. They continuously win big projects in areas and have a great workload. The management there is second to none in my opinion. They have a good one on one relationship with their employees. The biggest downside is stagnant career advancement, meager pay increases, and minor ESOP contributions. The ESOP program is a joke and and I would much rather have contributions to my 401k.

I have been with the company for 5 years and it was my first job out of college. It has been a great professional experience, where I have been able to be exposed to different offices, extra-curricular activities and networking events. Each office has a different culture - I have been able to work in the Mechaniscburg and Haddon Heights offices. These two offices are very different. I will say, the company worked with me to provide a job through a move from New Jersey to central Pennsylvania. Overall, if you are passionate about consulting, I think Pennoni is a good company.

A typical day at Pennoni, as Design Supervisor, one would encounter typical mentoring, training, and developing team mates, who will have the ability to produce a product, ready for review, and release to construction.

I learned that you should never put all eggs in one basket, and diversify your faster growing team mates, and place them with the challenged learner.  This grows balanced team, as well develop loyalty.

Pennoni could be a better company overall. I was hired in with the expectation that it would be a company I could grow with. I worked there for 6 months before they laid me off and said they were going to put me closer to home for work because they had just bought out a engineering firm close to my area. They never called me back and would repeatedly ignore my phone calls. When I did get a hold of my boss he just lied to me. Was given tasks to complete, within particular guidelines and was given freedom to complete the tasks as saw fit. Received good training, internally and externally. Loved, the job.

Office management was excellent, corporate management was decent. Co-workers were great to work with, and always interested in helping if they could. There is definitely a “team” mentality there. They don’t just talk about it, they live it.

Hardest part of the job, was when work was really light, and fearing layoffs. The most enjoyable part of the job, was the people there.


This job is not easy, you will work in hot environments and there is a lot of physical labor. You also have to work with very expensive equipment that you do not want to be responsible for breaking, however, my supervisor taught me well and the people there do care about your health. An important thing to take not of is that these people do take their job seriously, so even if the environment is friendly they expect you to do your job and do it well.

In the beginning It was a great Place to work. Division Manger was fantastic. Learned a lot form everyone. Insurance is the best in the industry . Pay is on the lower end for 3rd party firms. New Division Chief is not employee friendly, not really skilled at the position.  There are a few Inspectors and Supervisors that feel that they are better than everyone else.  Like to cause hardships for certain people. Overall though, mostly had a good experience.
