When I started working here it was great. My boss at the time was very encouraging, taught me a lot about the kitchen and was very patient with me. I became a Sous Chef thanks to them for believing in me. After they had quit, we were under new management (who knew nothing about running a kitchen). It became a very toxic place to work at, and I became very depressed and stressed with all the work load they make you do. After having my kid, I did not get any commodations towards my scheduling, wasn’t asked for my opinions on how to train staff the way they are supposed to. Being a Sous Chef and trying to run 6 different sites, they expected me to work during my off hours since I was getting salary I “don’t get time off” I always had to be on call. If something went wrong I had to drop everything I was doing at home and had to work. But if I were to put in those hours on my time sheet, they would interrogate me and tell me I needed to manage my time. There was a lot of favoritism towards the other Sous Chef since he was young and didn’t have his own family. I was let go for a small simple mistake that I thought would have just been a write up but since they were tired of me reporting them to HR, they just decided to let me go. 

Working at PATH continues to be a great experience. The team is very close and the teams support each other. Management does there best to assist and provide guidance. Many changes in the last 4 months and there is alot of changes going on. The organization is definitely having some growing pains because its growing so quickly. Be patient with the process and be quick on your feet. Do your best to communicate with management because even they are still learning with all the changes. There's no retaliation for not knowing but there is alot of pressure from our grants and funders. This job is not for everyone. There is a lot of demand in the shelter setting and if you can't handle getting your hands dirty and aren't good at crisis intervention. DONT WORK HERE! You have to have tough skin for this job. You also have to be willing to adapt to change and go with the flow sometimes. I have a blast here and the clients are  great to work with. Housing is tough to come by in LA so when a client gets housed it's the most rewarding experience!

My time working at this agency was rather unpleasant. Upper management neglected mid management and other staff. Some employees and security often stole cleaning supplies and the best donations. There was negative competition between departments which lead to staff trying to embarrass one another. One example of pettiness was workers sending inflammatory emails and copying other workers plus upper management. One worker smiled and told me it's the PATH culture too highlight through email perceived staff errors. Less than stellar front line staff are constantly hired to work with the clients because the agency chooses to pay 25k or less while paying 90k and higher to upper management. Many of the workers do the least required to maintain work. The agency seems afraid of lawsuits and allows stealing, repeated tardiness, case managers who refuse to meet with clients regularly, harassment, childish behavior, inappropriate behavior with clients (talking down to clients, exchanging personal phone numbers with clients, friend in them on social media, and using clients as servants).

I can’t say yet, I am only reviewing the interview process, as I have only just today been given a conditional job offer. Tho I will say  PATH has higher pay and better benefits/ PTO packages than most non-profits in this field.  Additionally they have a huge range of positions, sites and different services, so I’m sure some sites and departments are amazing and some might be struggling to find the right groove.  Again, I haven’t started yet and all I can say so far  is that the interview to hire process was fair and friendly, the pay and benefits offered are above average in LA  and PATH does an incredible amount of good, needed human service work all over California, and I’m excited to join the mission.

The staff and culture  of the company.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I wouldn’t say ‘stressful’ but rather be able to shift into a different role in a moments notice.  Flexibility and compassion are key to navigating stressful situations.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Based on my personal experience at the PATH location I was working,  I would say the work environment embodied a family type of energy & structure.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I knew exactly what my main duties were going to be during each of my shifts.  My main role was conducting participant intakes, which was the one I gravitated to most and was eventually assigned by the Site Manager.  Once intakes were completed I fulfilled other general duties, including whatever needed to be done at the time.

Not the best place to work management turns a blind eye on work colleagues who happen to be mutual friend, show a great deal of favoritism to certain staff members. Gossip, use of vulgar language, lack of integrity and cross professional boundaries as a supervisor/ assistant director and staff.  Lacks professionalism, employees come and go as they please. Administration does not hold case managers accountable, which makes the job more stressful. Case managers do not carry their own weight, due to lack of skills and experience. Case Manager lack work ethics, progress notes and documentation are not complete on time. Program Manager expect new case manager to pick the weight of the other case managers who have fallen behind with their documentation that is a year worth of documentation not being done and being filled away in the client's file.

I had worked for PATH for 3+ years in several departments. The work that they provide is meaningful, but with unfair wages, it does not feel worth the amount of mental stress you are taking on. 
Cost of living has increased in California, but the wages for employees aren't increased. In 2019 starting pay was around $19/hour. As of today, starting pay for case management is $21/hr.  Supervisors encourage moving up in the company, but positions are limited. 
The company is a non profit and therefore do not offer any annual increases, and base pay off of "merit". 
Overall, the position is self driven, requiring you to be self driven and organized. There are great trainings you can benefit from. 
This is a great stepping stone for a career in this field, but I would not suggest staying here for long. 


You’re overworked with little pay! It’s a stressful position working the front desk because you get to deal with everyone coming in with drama and their problems and you need a lot of patience to deal with them because they’re rude sometimes and screams or yell at you, sometimes they go off on you for no reason. Knowing how to hold back and putting yourself in their position is a big deal here for the little pay they offer. Work culture is okay but could be better because a lot are so entitled and make work environment difficult to enjoy. If we’re working towards the same goal and helping others, you should be selfless and as resourceful to your clients and coworkers but some people are just trash only their for themselves and form cliques creating division at work. I had to leave after having been there for a while cause it was just too stressful.

The San Diego office has poor management and they love to micromanage everything. They have a great vision and I loved what they are trying to do. However, they do not communicate with the staff. They tell you that they want to know when you do not feel like something is right, but then treat you as an outcast if you mention what you do not think is right. They will write you up for hearsay and have the paper ready for you to sign before you even tell your side of the story. They should really treat their employees like they want the employees to treat them and the clients. I was sad when I left because I really like what the mission statement stood for. I only wished the management would have stood for the same thing. I learned a lot good and bad and I will take that with me.

Assisting the homeless with everything from basic needs, public benefits, housing , court. A lot of freedom with the position. Due to the population, it is extremely taxing mentally. Somewhat frustrating too, especially when you’ve worked with someone 5 days a week anywhere from 1 month to a year to get them “housing ready” and they flake and chose to stay on the street than in their own fully paid apartment. Or, even worse is when you move them in and they die shortly after. With my position I have been exposed to many uncomfortable and awkward situations. Clients divulge too much information and many times begin to think of you more as a friend than case manager. Due to the size of caseload and every client needing something from you, it is challenging to avoid feelings of burn-out.
