I worked full-time in the Dental Hygiene department for two years. Unfortunately, my experience was heavily impacted by ineffective leadership and a lack of professionalism within department management.  Concerns brought to upper management were rarely addressed or followed up on, which created a culture where employees felt unsupported. Issues were often acknowledged but not resolved, leading to repeated problems and ongoing frustration.  Communication within the department lacked transparency. Staff members were frequently excluded from meetings where important updates and procedural changes were discussed, yet were still expected to execute those changes flawlessly. Information was often shared informally after the fact, creating confusion and inconsistency. Initiative and new ideas were not encouraged, and questioning processes was often perceived negatively.   Leadership operated with a micromanagement style while simultaneously failing to provide clear direction or consistent communication. The workplace culture reflected these leadership challenges. Gossip and poor conflict management were prevalent, contributing to low morale and high turnover within the department. Accountability felt uneven, and expectations were not applied consistently.  Compensation did not match the scope of responsibilities. My workload steadily increased, including covering multiple roles, without pay adjustments or formal recognition of the expanded duties.  Opportunities for professional growth were extremely limited. Advancement within the organization did not feel transparent or merit-based, which made long-term career development difficult.  Overall, the department felt disorganized, with unclear policies and inconsistent enforcement of procedures. While the students and some colleagues were wonderful, the management structure ultimately made the environment unsustainable for me.

As an instructor, my students are treated with respect and they understand what is expected of them. A typical day at work begins with students signing in the attendance book, then immediately they begin their three sets of vitals, after vitals lesson begin. 

Lab skills are critical and each student must demonstrate that they are proficient. Students spend a lot of time in lab learning the skills needed to b successful. Lecture is also important, it helps if you understand be know why you do what you do, and how it all works together.

Management are great they work very hard to make sure that instructors, and students have all the tools, resources needed to be successful. Their doors are always open, and they are very welcome of ideas. 
 
The hardest part of this job is to see students who work so hard and fail the AMT exam by one or two points. I also think it's very hard to see students who get so close and life takes a whole and they have to take a leave of absence, it breaks my heart to see this, cause I fear most want return.

The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing my students gain the confidence that they can do it. I love when my students come back and share with other students the joy of working in the field. Finally, I love to see students pass the AMT, finish externship and get offered a job as a certified medical assistant.

I absolutely love teaching, it allows me to share the knowledge I have with others, and it gives me the chance to make a different in the lives of all who come through my class.

Happiness is being a medical assistant instructor.

I accepted this role because I was passionate about educating the next generation of  professionals. Unfortunately, I found significant inconsistencies in leadership, communication, and policy enforcement that ultimately influenced my decision to leave.

Academic policies were not consistently applied among students, which created confusion for both faculty and students. Faculty were expected to enforce certain policies while exceptions were made in other situations. This made it difficult to maintain fairness and consistency.

I also observed blurred professional boundaries between leadership and students, including discussions of internal faculty matters with students and requests for students to relay information about faculty conversations. This created an environment where trust among staff was diminished.

Student preparedness was another concern. Clinical affiliates increasingly expressed concerns about graduates’ hands-on skills, and many students voiced frustration regarding the amount of practical instruction they received before competency evaluations. Faculty members who offered suggestions for improvement often felt those recommendations were not meaningfully considered.

There are many talented instructors who genuinely care about student success, but I believe stronger leadership, greater accountability, more consistent policy enforcement, and a more collaborative culture are needed for the program to reach its full potential.

The prices of the Associate & Certification Programs are over priced for the Houston education market.  Each year, we now have two tuition increases. As a employee I worked a minimum of 10 hours per day 6- 7 days a week.  The students were numbers to corporate versus people. The Houston campus has approximately a 75% minority population, due to the fact that the Houston campus is one of the most diverse cities in the metropolitan area. All other Pima Campuses are basically Caucasian; therefore people do not know how to treat minority students/employees in the Houston area from the Campus Director to the Corporate levels of leadership.There is racial biases in the Houston Campus and everyone ..students and/or staff are not treated on a fair and equitable basis.  The Campus Director is always in fear of loosing his job from his corporate leaders and the new President of the organization, is all about the money. When the school was first started, it was everything you could ask for, but now it is like the rest of the other private businesses, all about the money. The crime rate is terrible in the memorial area and the students/staff members are always having their cars broken into.  I suggest that if you are a common person, please remember, you have to pay your student loans back..so go to a place that cares..really cares. Best of Luck in your educational endeavors.

The most depressing place I’ve ever worked. Not a single faculty member is/was happy. They will overwork you and ask for more and more with zero pay increase or acknowledgement of the great work you put in.  Things have changed in the last few years. Being a good educator is important to me but it’s hard to focus on doing/being that when you have corporate consistently changing things and not for the better. Recently, without any input from the people it affects they changed faculty to hourly employees. This was rolled out to faculty as a way to ensure we weren’t “overworked and would be paid overtime.”. Sureeee…. What a joke. I got smacked on the wrist the first time I worked overtime (the first week this change occurred) and told I could never do that again. My job didn’t change , I still work 40+ hours a week, I’m just acutely aware of how much I work for free now because I clock out and have to continue working to get my job done. They also won’t allow you any remote work, meanwhile they all work from home. If you don’t teach a section  you will still be chained to your desk doing things you could absolutely do from home, but their archaic style management won’t allow it.  They are so behind on the times of progressive leadership practices. The PTO is atrocious. There is no up side to working here. They are mean spirited, with zero care for you as a person. You are a not important and they make that abundantly clear. And they wonder why they can’t keep anyone or recruit any quality educators. I’m out! 

A typical work day is answering inbound and outbound calls while selling the caller an appointment to schedule a campus tour to meet with a school advisor. Along with answering calls, you must be able to multi-task with scheduling appointments and data entry. 
The most difficult part of the job was a tie between trying to maintain the daily department goals of 150 calls a day and 5 hours of talk time and dealing with the highly stressful callers who were either very difficult to understand or very demanding of trying to just get the information they were looking for and not wanting to schedule an appointment. I also felt that management was very inconsistent, unorganized and unprofessional. It took me 5 months for my manager to complete and have my annual review. There is also no room for advancement which also makes it very difficult to want to stay for too long. 
The most enjoyable part of the job was the benefits. The pay is good, they offer medical, dental and vision benefits, tuition reimbursement and gym reimbursement. They also are great about recognizing their employees for hard work. They give away a cruise package each year to their top employees as well. 
I would recommend this job to anyone who is looking for something temporary and is need of good benefits.

I worked at Pima as a Career Advisor. The Houston campus is in a wonderful location and very close to a mall and beautiful hospital. The parking however is horrible and the campus director forces you to park MILES away to get to the campus because the location is in a"shopping center" the parking is EXTREMELY limited. Crime has also increased with cars being vandalized on the one security the campus has is one guard who SLEEPS in the back of the building half the day. On another note, I enjoyed my role as an advisor and had the upper hand as I had advisor experience in the past because after being with the campus for over a YEAR I never received proper training from corporate. The expectations of me continued to grow even with no training. Our department was always scrutinized we have over 10 programs and only 2 advisors handling the problems of many programs with no help from the campus director of corporate. The campus director does not understand for career services works and all he understands is NUMBERS he has no heart for his employees. He doesn't care what personal or financial hardship you may be going through he only wants you to do your job and smile. After meeting all yearly expectations my raise was barely .25 which I hear is the normal company wide! This location needs better management and fast.

This company cares most about keeping the classroom seats filled and cares zero about the instructors who actually teach the students what they need to get hired in the job market.  Only the admissions and placement people ever get praised, recognized, or paid what they deserve.  It is the instructors who have to put up with the daily battle of tracking poor attendance, refusal to follow campus rules, and complete lack of personal responsibility from the students. The instructors are the ones who teach the students everything they need to succeed (and success rates are great) yet have to watch as admissions and placement reap the rewards of it.    I used to love teaching until I started teaching at a for-profit institution.   Instructors are fully expected to give 200% all the time, yet are given no support from the powers that be.   Students are encouraged to write whatever petty grievances they may have about an instructor and the instructor is required to accommodate; however, when instructors voice their own concerns they are ignored or brushed under the rug so nothing ever improves.

Lack of clear direction from management.  Schedules are frequently adjusted without prior notice and expectations for instructors to "jump in" and "wing it" until things are figured out.  Rosters are complicated and never correct within the first week of classes.  Curriculum updates create differences between instructor textbooks, student textbooks, and in some cases have created the same classes having two different textbooks completely.  Grading and posting attendance, as well as student counseling are considered "prep-pay" so the hours spent outside of the "scheduled class time" are unpaid or severely underpaid.

Very high turn-over rate, and confusion on class sizes are a frequent cause for schedule and job requirement changes.  Overtime is discouraged, but frequently requested due to high turn over and no instructor coverage as a back-up.  Hours of overtime are frequently removed from the time sheet before being sent to payroll.

I was first associated with Pima as a student in the first class on this campus in November of 2015. The education I received was incredible and allowed me to secure a position in a specialty field before I had even finished school. After graduation, I would come back often to visit my favorite teachers and staff. When I was asked if I would be interested in coming back to campus to help teach the next group of veterinary students, I jumped at the opportunity. Now that I have been able to work with the instructors that helped shape my career, I have even more respect for what they do. Teaching isn't easy but they make it look effortless. Everyone is so knowledgeable and willing to help students in any way that they can. I am only there part time but the bond that we are able to form with the students, and the leadership and guidance that we are able to provide is inspiring. I think it speaks volumes about a company and a school when the graduates are so willing and eager to come back and be a part of the program that got them to where they are. I personally know of at least 4 former students that have come back to be a part of the Pima team and I am proud to be one of them.
