As an intern we were required to come in at 7:00am we would then log in to our Bloomberg Terminal where we would then work on various project throughout the summer related to the system. We would also job shadow a different job on the trader floor everyday such as a fixed income trader, a fixed income salesmen, Underwriter etc. In addition to this we would experience product teach-in's on each specific fixed income product to get a better understanding of its usage and impact. Piper offers all fixed income products but specializes within the municipal bond product. In addition to our teach-ins, we interns were given the opportunity to job-shadow various roles on the trading floor such as:
1.	Data Analytics 
2.	Fixed Income traders
3.	Fixed Income Salesmen
4.	Underwriters
5.	Back office team 
6.	Middle market team
I was also given the opportunity to participate in a speaker series. Every Thursday, all interns within Piper Jaffray & Co. would meet with a member of the executive team. We were able to ask questions and connect with powerful players in Piper’s pipeline. 

The culture is very accommodating for young professionals striving to learn about the investment banking world. The people are always willing to talk and always ready to give words of advice. 

The hardest part of the job was becoming fluent in the Bloomberg terminal. As an intern, realizing the power of Bloomberg was almost overwhelming and trying to grasp the fullness of its capacity took a lot of experimenting and learning. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was the team.

It's a good team with good overall dynamics and quality control. The nature of the work provides for advancement opportunities as experience is gained. IT support, front-desk, and administrative support are all helpful as well. The only noticeable improvement would be the decision making of upper management in consideration of employee opinions and surveys. Due to the company being public (as with many others), external policy influences and internal corporate politics is strong. Management is under an extreme amount of pressure to perform and is therefore hardwired to make blanket-level decisions that benefit shareholders rather than it's own employees, so just be aware.  

There is probably no other firm in the Fixed Income business that launches and then jettisons business units faster than Piper. The manager who hired me and his boss were out within 4 months of my hire date.  Management cliques abound with Municipal bonds being the only constant. It's one thing for management to innovate and strive to improve,  but I was under no less than 4 different compensation schedules in a single year. 

It's not all negative. There are many intelligent and hardworking salesmen, traders, analysts, and administrative staff who are courteous and available. The business expense policy is also quite reasonable with respect to the firm's investment in business development and employee professional needs (including conference attendance and educational materials). Benefits were better-than-average.

Paper jaffrat was my 1st corporate job I started there is a switchboard operator in receptionist and loved it.
I expanded and was able to advanced.
 I was part of the telecommunications division I did adds moves and changes I did a lot of cord nation with branch office building out and relocations I also worked a lot with the new computer system that we had gotten at 1 point for the brokers called stock meat and then we went over from stock made to 80P is just a very good learning experience.

I was very young when I started at Piper, Jaffray. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. I needed to learn about municipal bonds and how they work. Each municipal bond is different. I takes a long time to learn how each bond works. And then teaching about the bonds to other brokers. Once your knowledge of bonds in known, it's very easy to get the brokers to sell them to our customers.
The group of people I worked with were very enjoyable. We worked together as a team. The trading desk, had to work together. And we did it well. It's a great company. And I enjoyed working here.

My day would start with working with our ACH errors and client accounts, so it was imperative that these were handled in a timely manner. I learned about ACH regulations and excel spreadsheets.
Management was great. They took the time to listen to their employees, flexible.
My co-workers were fun to work for and we did activities outside of work as well.
The hardest part of my job was getting laid off (last trickle down effect from 9/11)
The most enjoyable part of the job was doing the job. Loved what I did.

It's a very relaxing culture to work at Piper Jaffray, and a great opportunity to learn and grown your skills as a junior developer. A small IT department with all facets of software engineering that provides great exposure for someone wants to explore the career an learn. Besides everybody is willing to help and teach.

Great culture. Smart people. Leadership very in-tune with what is going on. Like most investment banks, experience and success will depend somewhat on which group or product you are in.  I did not fully appreciate strength of culture and teamwork until after I had left, which is on me.

Culture problems seem prevalent throughout company--specifically the lack of accountability for actions taken (including senior management). This has been an employee concern for several years.Low employee morale and senior management is very "clique-ish"--SF and NY feel very isolated from HQ in Minneapolis.

Daily deadlines for completed deposits made for a busy day
Learned system input for deposits, withdrawals in both cash and securities
Co-workers were very professional and fun
Hardest part was meeting deadlines while servicing clients at the last minute
