The job is not as horrendous as my ratings make it sound and honestly the experience varies from each building and the management held within; as well as the team at hand that you are given. It is simple work and easy to manage but obstacles like under staffing, forgetful management and lack of confidence in receiving a raise from management for your well due time spent within the company as well as achievements made by you can really deter you from feeling like there is a step beyond being a front desk receptionist/porter. For some this job provides them the possible time they need to be with family since in some cases(most) it is fairly flexible on finding a building that suits your needs and times. However for someone in a full time position and in a leadership role sometimes responsibilities that are for your supervisor get thrown on you because they have too much to deal with in the background. Also in the case scenario that someone calls out it is easier for them to have you just stay in your shift for a whole 16 hours when that's extremely frowned upon in a lot of other buildings. Staff who have set schedules can not be forced to stay especially if they have children or other obligations to consider at home and sometimes management does not want to pay out for that over time, but have no choice when leaving employees stranded at the work place because of a lack of "floater" coverage. In a positive light this job being a 24/7 service has saved me from the hardships of being in a pandemic when things have been hard I just wish to see more output effort towards the employees that make this whole experience within these buildings possible.


As a concierge, I had the privilege of interacting with a diverse range of clients on a daily basis. This was by far one of the worst and most unorganized companies I have ever worked for. The job description constantly changed, with additional responsibilities being added regularly while compensation rarely reflected the increased workload.

The work environment felt extremely unhealthy and hostile at times. I experienced what I perceived to be racial bias, unfair scrutiny, and unprofessional treatment from staff, HR, and upper management. Rather than fostering a supportive and productive workplace, the environment often felt intimidating and overly militant. Employees were frequently treated as though they were under investigation instead of being valued team members simply trying to perform their job duties and go home at the end of the day.

One of the first red flags occurred during the hiring and onboarding process. HR falsely claimed that I was not in communication with them, despite the fact that I had emails and screenshots proving consistent communication regarding onboarding requirements. This nearly impacted my employment before I had even officially started.

After being hired, the atmosphere continued to feel uncomfortable and targeted. Meetings and conversations often included threatening tones regarding employment status rather than constructive guidance or support. While accountability and professionalism are understandable in any workplace, there is a major difference between encouraging employees to improve and making them feel as though management is actively looking for reasons to terminate them.

Overall, my experience was marked by poor organization, constant changes in expectations, lack of proper support, and what I believe to have been a discriminatory and toxic work environment.

Planned Companies is a mixed bag. The actual concierge work is super easy to the point it's free money. However, they're very unprofessional and the people in charge are beyond incompetent. When I got hired in 2015, we had a guy in charge who was very laid back, however, almost never took his job seriously. Take that as you will. He was replaced by some incompetent 18 year old girl from out of state who had no leadership or management skills and rubbed everyone the wrong way on her power trip. 

Also, the company was illegally not paying us for holiday and overtime, yet tried to make us work those days as well, while management would "shift" over hoildays to weekdays to ensure they got bonus pay, but anyone working weekends were not, even if they worked on Christmas! It was about to lead to a strike and class action lawsuit. So, yeah, so there's that. 

I worked at a Chinatown location for several years and the place was a huge dump and borderline dangerous. The job is very much something great if you're in school or only doing it part time as I was, but as a career, it'd be the most depressing, soul-crushing experience ever. We also had a recklessly awful property manager who only did her job as a THIRD job! So residents would rightfully complain about the dozens of building issues because their property manager essentially never did her job while collecting a paycheck. That's how incompetent they are there. 

ONLY take this job if you're willing to take it as "seriously" as they do and just want easy money. It's not a career at all and you will have no future there. It's easy money, but reckless and incompetent management.

Can't say enough good things about working as a Concierge/Doorman at Planned Companies! It's the perfect blend of a big company footprint with a close-knit, family-style vibe.

Pro's
They will hire almost anyone. 
Flexible hours 
Benefits package 
They will do their best to never fire someone because they would have to pay unemployment but also even if a property manager doesn't want you at their building then the Planned Co. managers can just send you to another site. Happens pretty often actually but can be a benefit. 

Con's 
Managers are users who will pressure you into working and sacrificing your personal needs for their needs. 
They pretend to be supportive on the small things so when you present them with bigger issues and they falter they can use the smaller things to display how they were there for you but it's a tactic, a manipulation if you will. 
I have been with the company for a year and a half and there are maybe 6 or 7 of us that have been here that long but overall there are probably about 40 or so concierges. 
There are plenty of concierge's that don't respect time and are constantly late. You can't leave the desk until you are relieved from duty by the next concierge so dont plan anything after work. 
They dont negotiate their contracts with buildings very well so most positions pay minimum wage yet they expect "luxury service". 
COMMUNICATION is incredibly lacking, after a year and a half the operations managers boss still had no clue what I do. 
If you have an HR problem DO NOT try and let management convince you that they can handle it. Go straight to the HR staff.

this company sucks and are liars i was working for planned because the building i was working in switched us over to planned after 1 year of working with them i noticed pay roll always got hours wrong had to run around and call and harras alot of the managers to get my money that i was owed and once the building i was in lost there contract with planned i was left with no job after being at that site for 2 years and a half i was working there before planned even showed up i was left on unemployment with no job and one day after 2 months with no work i was called and offered a handy man job was told it could be permanant if i did well long story short i worked my but off was doing great and thought i had the job after a month they simply text me one morning and told me to not come in anymore and was replaced for no reason by someone who was cool with the managers since they are all albanian they look at for each other and i am latino they gave this person the job that was for me i was working really hard to keep this job and doing everything that was asked of me the right way they still got rid of me in the end and just used me for a month till they got there homeboy in to replace me company sucks do not work for them they will screw you over

The postion does not require anything extensive skill other than understanding how to use a computer. Dress code is mandatory, but the company offers to pay for your uniform as well as clean them for free. A person may be swamped with tenants asking for various requests. My advice is tend to those whom you can help, and refer the others to the right person when it is out of your jurisdiction. Overtime can be hard to schedule as it most of it implies when people calling out at last minute. Requesting time off is usually honored, if given proper notice. On the other hand, it may not be available during major holidays ( Christmas and Thanksgiving).
My initial manager was overall nice and was only hard on me about tardiness( I respect that). The manager I had when leaving was new to her position, and wasnt really prepared. This resulted in co workers in the same position as i am under her to slack off, which makes the job harder. Overall, its a nice job out of highschool to get money in your pocket as well as customer service experience, but I would recommend to actively look for a better job elsewhere.

The job looks good when you start. But after a while, there is no real security from this job. Have co-workers that just love to call out when they feel like it, been put through one too many situations where associates are not warned or given consequences for their negligence, and was being overworked and underpaid. Plus, your never gonna gain a raise until the counsel in the building decides to give the company more money (stuck working 4 years without a raise). Lastly (can't speak for all but), my last Regional Manager, never answers calls (unless you make it a fake emergency or say that your calling out), hardly showed up to building meetings (which made the company lose the contract), and pretended that I never sent him a vacation request when I sent it 3 months prior and emailed him every two weeks fore-which he never replied or acknowledged that I sent it ( while also having proof by sending it to the building manager). The companies ideals sound great on paper, but what I received wasn't so in real life. Just hope your in better hands than I was

I can't seem to leave the review I wanted, so I'll be brief -

Don't do it to yourself. Lax oversight by management, poor communication and errors in pay can lead to a very frustrating
work environment. Add to it the poor training that leads to poor customer service and you have a recipe for disaster.

Seriously bad management. I'm not sure what the requirements are for hiring the management staff but the bar must be really low. They seem less interested in quality porters or concierge as they are at putting bodies behind desks or pushing a broom. Depending on the job site, you could be walking into a swamp of low moral, "non-fire-able" co-workers (they seem to hire FAMILY members who would get kicked out of ANY OTHER reputable company) and insane work schedules. Management seems only to show up when they are on the verge of losing the contract with the building. You never get your supplies or uniforms on time. You often have to come out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed. 

Great residents in some really nice building and amazing tips from residents during the holidays lends balance to what would otherwise be a hair-pulling, teeth clenching, soul-crushing experience that I will never fully share with anyone.

Leave them off your resume if you want to get called back by a reputable company. Ever.
