A typical day at PVHMC is a fast pace, stress levels seem to always be high. Many people struggled to keep up with the high standards set by the management team. However, as part of my responsibilities I am always there to motivate my staff and assist them with any issues they may encounter. At the same time identify if tools are needed to help them reach their goals. 

Management: The current management is doing a great job in trying to meat the current goal of the hospital. However, the lack of communication to the staff makes the staff become more stressful. The staff is not clear on what is the mission and the goal that they are to focus on. There are members of the management team that Micromanage the staff and to include the supervisors. This prevents the department leads from moving forwards with decisions made at a department level. 

Coworkers, within the co-workers there is a high level of support and communication. 

The hardest part of the job: Not been able to make decision of your own department due to the current micromanagement in the hospital. The different individual behavior and low on diversity.

The most enjoyable part of the job: the satisfaction to know that I took a team that was not organized. Productivity was low,  individuals had poor  engagement with the department and no team work. Leaving my department I have manage to increase our productivity, I encourage the employees to become more engage. This lead to more participation and improved their moral as they felt they were part of the change. The team supports each other and help each other to prevent any backlogs and help the department reach our one common goal. The communication in department is great, the culture of the department has definitely change in a positive way. I am proud to leave knowing that I made a difference on those individuals and my department.

Gaining 13 years of administrative experience, I learned to be resourceful and excel under pressure, especially within 9 of those years at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, a 400 bed acute care hospital.  
Within a short period of time I was promoted from Secretary to Administrative Assistant to Admin/Office Coordinator by being a proactive, energetic problem-solver with a passion for providing support.  
I reliably offered well-rounded experience and resources to assist the Nursing Director and 5 Supervisors with their responsibilities. Holding a vital position within Cardiac Services,  I focused on seamlessly integrating my role with the various management styles.  The excitement of assisting multiple Managers, Supervisors and Nursing Director was enjoyable and challenging.  I thrived on being able to solve problems, find resources needed and generally help by using my experience and quick thinking to help the managers and director. 
This was the most enjoyable and the hardest part, and always a challenge which I enjoy.  There was never a dull moment working in the Cardiac Services, and if the day ever did become slower, there was always more projects to research or tasks to implement.

Benefits include nurse led quality improvement projects through shared governance model.  Clinical ladder advancement available although requirements demand large amount of time spent outside of working hours to obtain. You will undoubtedly gain exceptional experience as a registered nurse in any department in treating a large variety of conditions with a diverse population. I would encourage any new graduate RNs to apply and work here. On the downside, many of the nurses have been employed long term and due to seniority it is difficult for new experienced nurses to have variation in assignments/roles. There is little room for advancement and a lack of inclusion of new hires leading to difficulty recruiting and retaining experienced nurses. The workload is heavy with large volume of patients in critical condition. Expectations are high and there is little acknowledgment of merit by coworkers or supervisors. For the last 3 years at my annual evaluation, my supervisor has asked me to gain education/certification I already possess and has only performed one evaluation face to face. I believe there is a copy/paste approach to job duties rather than an interest in providing feedback on individual performance.

Overall it's an OK place to work, not great but not awful either. They are struggling with how to cope with the Affordable Care Act like all service providers. In the 10+ years I've been here my overall impression is that they are relatively stable and I don't worry about my job. The compensation is at market rate or above but the benefits are POOR in comparison to other local hospitals like Kaiser.

Advancement within the NICU is more difficult than other areas within the hospital. So if you're going into that department be aware that you probably won't go any further as I haven't seen anyone promoted in a decade. 

Like many regional medical centers PVHMC is cutting back on benefits. One of the reasons I began working here was the promise of free healthcare for my family after 10 years. I just celebrated my 10th year and they have decided to take away that benefit which isn't right. I could have made more money elsewhere but decided to stay here because I thought my family would be taken care of. If I had to do it all over again I would have gone to work somewhere else.

I have been working at Pomona for more than 5 years, in two separate departments. Each department has it flaws and is usually upper management. It has been unorganized, unfair, overly demanding based on your pay rate. They require more from you that what was originally requested. The only enjoyment would the diverse culture at Pomona, amazing people with great backgrounds and work ethics that make working at Pomona bearable. They do not work with school schedules or even life schedules, everything is based around their needs regardless of seniority, mind you each department I have been there 2 years plus, I had to drop down form a benefited position to un-benefited position due to one day of the week that I would be arriving 30 minutes late. Favoritism is seen and displayed throughout the hospital, and 'certain activities' among varies employees has been a growing trend causing personal affairs to be affecting professional affairs. There is no advancement within the hospital, the qualify usually leave Pomona for better pay, career quality, and time.

My typical day at work was answering calls, entering monitary gifts from donors, opening the department mail, mailing out correspondence, and maintaining the department database. 
I learned how generous people can be when it comes to the needs of a community hospital.
Management in my department was not defined; it was a small department and I had the least seniority. 
It never felt like I was part of the "team". Only when my assistence benifited others, was I asked to help my co-workers.
The hardest part of the job was working in close quarters with three very different and sometime difficult personalities.
The most enjoyable part of the job was witnessing the community come together to raise funds for the hospital and its patients.

I learned a lot during my stent at Pomona Valley Hospital. It was overall a terrific experience. I had great new grad training, the staff was welcoming and the pay was very good. My problem was the management, they seemed to be unfair  in their assessments of staff. Also, Everyone has a "hat", was a common theme across the department. Meaning, certain individuals weren't necessarily "required" to work out of their job while others had to. While we were all nurses, it was common knowledge that  some were just above floor nursing. Just one many injustices. I always felt that they were more of a slap on the wrist  than a commendation type of place; handing out write ups for very menial things. It was all just very exhausting at times. All in which creates cracks in good manager/nurse relations. With that being said, the coworkers were great, the training was above par, the experience was unforgettable. I'm glad I worked there, and learned as much as I did. I have a lot to take away from my experiences.

Once I had my foot in the door in a per diem clerical position, it became clear to my supervisor that I had much more to offer.  I was always eager to learn the next skill and to help out wherever necessary.  I quickly learned my position, then cross trained to work in other areas of my department.  Because the position was only part time, I also became available to other departments as needed, and again proved myself as a versatile and quick learner, able to adapt to many different situations. Within 2 months of beginning my employment, I became known as a "go-to" person for any open shifts and worked full time.

When a medical assistant position became available, my supervisor recommended me for the position and I was transferred.  As a medical assistant, I was able to use skills I'd learned in other departments of the hospital to ensure the best care for my patients, and to communicate with other departments proficiently.

I have had the opportunity to Volunteer at this Hospital and it has been an eye opening experience for me. I have learned a lot about patient care and have had the opportunity deal with patients and work staff in the clinical setting. A typical day at work would involve me working as a receptionist in the Pediatric department. My Duties would include but are not limited to greeting patients and patient families, transferring phone calls to the correct medical personnel, Filing patient information, Serving patients and patient families refreshment, snacks, and meals that are within the parameters of the patients' dietary needs. I would also stock up patient rooms and would also provide patients with anything they needed for personal care. I have the opportunity to work with and aid nurses and doctors and have had the privilege to watch them work.

Very busy ER, never enough staff to get patient’s registered. They work their employees like dogs with constant interruptions and the stress level there is super high. So unhealthy for anyone to go to work everyday with that kind of stress level.  They need a better set up when checking in patients for COVID testing. The line backs up and we have to walk outside and verify each patient address to make sure we have the correct patient all while we have a line of 6 or more people checking in for other things. Instead of putting someone outside to check in COVID testing patients that way the regular patients get checked in a timely manner. And hardly ever able to take your breaks because if you do the ER Admitting Dept will really fall behind. Majority of us would just take our lunch break and that’s it. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to work for this department.
