I've worked many places, and this was BY FAR the worst. I - no joke - still have nightmares about Preferred and I haven't been there in over a year. I was one of the lucky Coordinators who suffered every day in Patchogue. First off, we were WAY overworked and understaffed. The office hours are 9-5, however I don't think I ever went home at 5pm, it was more around 7 or 8pm. Sometimes we were there until 10pm. It was great for my wallet (lots of overtime), but horrible for my mental health, physical health and my life in general! I NEVER spent time with my family. I was getting migraines daily. Our office was understaffed with Coordinators, and we did not have enough quality HHAs (the ones who actually want to work) which made our roles extremely difficult. It was so bad, that there were patients who need 12 hour care who were going without service. How Preferred is still open, I truly have no idea. When we would bring these concerns up to corporate in Brooklyn, it fell upon deaf ears and we were completely ignored. We were like out of sight out of mind, and they really couldn't care less about us. They REFUSED to hire more Coordinators for the office. The manager of the Patchogue office is a horrible woman. She is nasty, condescending, she threatens you, and lies straight to your face. She will act like she is going to help you and make things better, but instead she disappears for days and nothing ever gets done. It truly was a horrendous place to work, and made me feel like I was going insane most days. If this wasn't enough to deter you, maybe this will... I quit Preferred with no new job lined up because I was THAT miserable!! I was happier with the idea of not making any money and having an uncertain future than working one more day at that dump.

One of the worst companies you can work for. I used to work as a paraprofessional there and they only offered 15$ hourly which is considered to be a low paying wage considering the heavy workload and responsibilities. If you decide to work for this agency, I would suggest that you pick up a second job. They still require you to fill out a physical time sheet weekly and turn it in every week which is a huge inconvenience for a lot of other employees. This company offers very little to no benefits. My father passed away last year and they refused to accommodate me for PTO, because they do not offer bereavement leave. I couldn't even use any sick days because they were conveniently "Pending", mind you by that point, I was working there for about 5 months. Bottom line, If you get hit with an emergency, you are on your own because they don't care. The management is very poor, incompetent, unhelpful and disorganized.  They love to give you the run around and keep you on hold when your calling about important matters. Some of the coordinators have a horrible work ethic and a bad attitude. I've witnessed so much laziness from the coordinators. Time and time again, they've only demonstrated how unreliable they are, you have to micromanage their staff to do their job. It took them 2 months to send me a simple employment verification letter. This agency had nothing good to offer to its employees besides a weekly paycheck. They won't even take the time to properly train its employees before sending them out to work. I'm so glad I left. I would not recommend this agency to anyone. 

A typical day at work is when all of the clients come at the same time for their glucose check and only one nurse is working on that day, and everyone  want their kit at the same time. The clients usually curse at the nurse using foul languages, being the nurse and knowing their conditions make you ignored their behaviour because the population at Preferred manors is mentally ill clients with medical conditions such as Diabetes and Hypertension. I have learned the different types of insulins , their action and duration. many types of antipsychotic medication, their indication, side effects, interaction and chemical  effects on the body. Management is excellent at Preferred Home care of NY, they care about their staff and treats them fairly.
The hardest part of the job is understanding the behavior of the clients, sometime it is fustrating to work with them especially when they are behaving abusive and voilent.  The work place Culture  is very good although each staff is from different nationality, we work and have fun together despite of some minor indifferences that resolve smoothly. The most enjoyable part of the job is when a client is capable and independent enough to move in the community and live a normal live with his or her family.

First off, they expect you to become an expert on the same week of hire. The work culture is very bad, there are lots of favoritism here. Upper management doesn’t seem to be doing their job, they pick and choose who they want to give out bs employment counseling, they micro manage the stupidest things, not paying attention to the bigger picture, also very rude. There are many employees that are unhappy, but they only hold on because of overtime. This company already has a bad rep, upon working for this company I found out they have HHAs that are criminals, (seriously) -these HHAs don’t seem to get extensive training, they complete their course in just two weeks! I would never entrust a company like this with my grandmother. HR never does anything, their communication lacks so badly, but oh! The communication in gossiping doesn’t lack at all. Not even worth the stress, you will not be a happy employee, in fact, your life will be very miserable because of how unappreciated you will feel after putting in so much work. The workload and expectations are close to unrealistic, and if you don’t meet their requirements at the end of the day, you will get penalized for it. Highly do not recommend. No no no. 👎🏿

The coordinators are childish and spend their time screening phone calls and hanging up the phone on both employees and cilents alike. They schedule two HHAs to work at the same time and then do not rembrused aides for thier own time being lost. The pretend that they tried calling you multiple times, when in reality, no one tried to contact you once. They don't even try to find aides in advannce, they simply wait to the day before to find relief.Whcih is a problem because you have to prepare to go to someone's house the next day, as if you don't have any pryor engagements. There has been countless times where other aides are available and they will not contact them because the aide had previously declined a case and the coordinators took it personal. They do not inform patients of what they should expect an HHA to do. No, we do not attend parties with the pateint. No, we do not help family members move furniture. NO, we do not provide HHA services to other members of the household that are not the patient. The only real saving grace with this company is that they are one of the few that will allow you to work more than 40 hours and pay overtime rates for that.

Upper management including the director within the coordination dept do not care about their employees. Work load is unmanageable and work hours are outrageous. A tipical day of work consist of covering other coordinators for weeks at a time in which leads to a coordiantor not being able to stabilize their caseload. When expressing your stress level to upper management their answer is always “the work needs to get done” however do not assist in doing so. The lack of professionalism within the dept is unbearable. I have never worked with such unprofessional people in my life. There is no room for growth because most coordinators do not last due to unmanageable and excessive work load given on a daily basis. You are basically managing two desk/caseloads for periods at a time and getting compensated for one which is very discouraging and frustrating. Overall this department has no structure or professionalism in which makes for a bad work place.

Being a paraprofessional has its pros and cons. Every profession does. The best part of this experience was working with the schools. You feel more value and appreciated.  The management is not organized. There is no development for growth. It feels like scam job. The pay is horrible as well. It makes no sense.  The staffs and coordinators are very unprofessional, dismissive, rude, inattentive and lackluster. They make a whole bunch of mistakes, don’t care about your work ethics. They assigned random cases that affects your productivity when you speak about it they are ready to passively aggressively attack you. Not something I would be long term. It’s good experience for younger people.

I've worked for about 5 home care companies throughout my career and Preferred is by far, is the most advanced when it comes to use of cutting edge technology that makes day to day work more manageable, steady focus on social media, open to new ideas and genuinely interested in employee retention and professional growth.

I was hired as full time and they could never get me more than 20 hrs, even with 3-4 patients! They told me there were no cases in my area while the patients told me they were told there were no aides in my area and they waited forever. Then on one of the in-service classes I found out they gave a regular full time patient 5 min from me to someone who lived over 30min away and didn't want to drive that far  or work that many hours! Not reaching ft status I never qualified for benefits so I had to get another ft job bc with impending divorce I needed my benefits asap. In the end they couldn't figure out how to coordinate an in-service I could fit around my schedule or assist my schedule to make time for it and my certification lapsed so they just banned me and never called again with any classes. The only communication was the elimination notice over a year later!
