I’ve enjoyed my time with the company so far. Been working full time and it’s definitely fun getting to travel and dipping your feet to get experience. Don’t plan to stay here forever unless you love constant travel or can reliably work your way up the ladder. It’s definitaly humbling as well as interesting being able to travel and work in the fields that you do here. You also meet lots of interesting faces and get to network with just about anyone you can think of from CEOs to janitors to people doing the same job as you but for years on end. It’s not for everyone and even though I don’t mind the travel, what keeps me here is loving the job itself. It can drag on at time or become tedious but that can happen anywhere. The higher ups and HR do care and want to do their best to help you when they can. At the end of the day it is a business first and foremost but they do their best to treat you like family too. 

Side note: I know there have been many reviews about the company and some were pretty bad. I can’t State for those people in particular but from my coworkers and from myself I can say while it’s not perfect, you will love this company if you love being out in the field and traveling. Businesses work off of a risk/reward system and it’s no different here. The truth of the matter is if the company was so bad as all these reviews say, they wouldn’t have 70+ employees working for them. You need to come into the company realizing it for what it is. It’s not for everyone and not everyone will love it. Don’t go into a burger place expecting to get a great bowl of soup, so to speak. I enjoy it and they have their flaws but it’s by no means enough to hate the company or want to leave. The only way I see myself ever leaving is if I want to go into a new field of work, or they can’t provide the position that I’d want, or it comes to be too much travel once I settle down.

Field service engineer position is 100% travel.  A typical day of work involves waking up between 4-6AM.  If a jobsite is local, it will involve a drive, sometimes of 3-5hours. If site is not local, typically a flight is booked for 6-8AM.  In either case, work is on current or recent construction sites working with electrical contractors to troubleshoot, program and test lighting control systems for commercial buildings. Sometimes a job will be quick and you'll be headed home the same day around 3pm.  Other times, you'll spend the week doing 10-12hr days and living out of a hotel and fly home Friday night.
Expect to spend several hours a day walking around or sitting on a bucket hunched over a laptop in a dusty construction site while managing frequent customer/project manager calls.  Evenings are occasionally dedicated to organizing jobsite documentation and communicating with project managers.  Interaction with coworkers or management is limited exclusively (except for twice yearly company gatherings) to phone/conference calls and text/chat.  
Great opportunity to push your personal boundaries and learn a lot about lighting controls, construction, project management, travel and work remotely on your own while remaining in communication with and accountable to your boss/project manager.  Travel and managing projects gone wrong/angry customer/contractors are the hardest parts of the job.  Successfully running a difficult project and having a happy customer at the end is the most rewarding part of the job, knowing you delivered great customer service.

Co-workers were very down to earth and they seemed to enjoy working for the company. Everybody within the company goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed before, during, and after training. I never felt like I didn't belong and they make you feel excited to come on board.

The training was unorganized, unprofessional, and I felt like we were all set up for failure. Constantly throughout the training we were told "This isn't the final power point there's changes that still need to be made" "We don't have working equipment to show you what its supposed to look like." The entire time it was as if they were winging the training and if you had a hard time you were just going to be SOL. We were sent to job sites for on the job training shadowing employees troubleshooting lighting systems that we weren't even being trained for in class. How are we supposed to learn how to properly do the job when who were shadowing is working with a system we're unfamiliar with from training?
The worst part was our training managers made it seem like we were doing fine the entire time of training only for them to let us go the second to last day of training. No warning no improvement plan just "We don't think you're a right fit for the company so we're just going to let you go guys good luck to your future endeavors." They didn't even have the decency to tell us why or where we went wrong. They just fired us and had us at the airport within 2 hours headed back home confused at what just transpired. It was the most humiliating and unethical situation Iv'e ever encountered in my life professionally.

Not the best place to work.

Advancement here is completely dependent on how much you go out drinking with managers or the little in crowd. Very clumsy organizational structure with very poor middle management. West coast "management" is probably the worst of the company. Overall, there's a cult of personality here built around the owner, who pays a ton of lip service to personal growth, etc but can't see past his company's nose at the meathead culture here. Training is something they check off a list. It is quite poor overall. Generally, things at ProAutomated happen in a very reactionary-driven way. 

ProAutomated training is more of an indoctrination into their culture than it is training in any useful sense. There is a daily reminder that the field engineers at the companies for which ProAutomated subcontracts (Acuity, Lutron, Etc) are bad, lazy workers and "ProA" is the gold standard, which is nonsense.

 I've worked at both ProA and Acuity and there is no comparison. Acuity pays more, has better training, resources and pay. 

I highly recommend you look into working directly for Lutron, Acuity, Eaton or just about anyone. 

The pay at ProA is garbage for the time you put in, especially if you are suckered into their hourly scheme. Garbage.

My experience with the company has been nothing but positive. I joined nearly three years ago, and since then I have moved both upwards and laterally several times, getting a chance to experience different industries and discover what most interests me. Leadership are both transparent and approachable, showing a willingness to adapt when needed. This has been especially true since the start of COVID-19. While many friends and associates have faced employment uncertainty during this time, ProAutomated acted quickly to instill confidence in our job security, even despite work slowdowns during the first few months.

For more job-specific pros as a field engineer: if you enjoy hands-on work, problem-solving, and a company that takes care of you (and has fun while doing so), ProAutomated is an excellent company to work for.

The only cons, if you can consider them as such, are that work as a field engineer/technician often involves travel and will require being on-site. For anyone looking to work from home or to have a consistent schedule then this likely won't be a great fit.


Company on the whole is friendly but they'll cut you off at the knees to please the customer, saving face is #1 for this company and even if their employees are in the right - will fire them to make the customer happy.

The hours are long and stressful, don't expect to get much sleep. You're expected to work 12+ hours a day, they do not compensate for overtime. The customers are often rude and difficult to work with, expecting immediate results from zero time.

The compensation was decent but the process for working was horrible, communication was encouraged (discouraged) as asking questions would often warrant a "You should know this already, figure it out." Or passive-aggressive comments that wouldn't help at all.

Should you work for this company don't expect to be with them long even if you're performing well. If the customer does not like you for any reason, you're gone.

Great job if you are comfortable traveling most of the time. In my experience, most weeks I was away from home the entire week. They will plan on having you home each weekend and you are compensated generously for time spent traveling, but its a little bittersweet when you make it back on 1 am on Saturday. While on the road dont expect to be able to explore at all, because jobs are back to back. You also have to do all your own travel arrangements and most of the time you dont get notice until the night before.

job culture is so-so because a major part of the job is trying to navigate an narrow path of expectations that are not always clear or obvious. All communication occurs over group chats and asking questions can get you publicly chastised. Thick skin is required.

Extremely weird culture, alcohol is pushed on everyone and this place is a trap for recent college grads to take on a job that no sensible adult with experience working would take on. For training they had us travel to the corporate Delaware office, and (at the height if covid) share a townhome wit 3 other roommates to stay for the duration of training. There is one vehicle to be shared amongst 4 people...you are essentially trapped in Delaware with no options.After training, It will be expected that you be away from home for 10 days at a time and work 50+ hour weeks, with lousy bonus pay. The company expects you to be buddy buddy with your coworkers, in efforts to forget that you are literally devoting the most time possible to this company and away from your family. Stay away from this place, please.

I have been with ProAutomated for nearly 2 years at this point and I can honestly say that I have never worked for a better company.  The culture, the efforts made to keep a work/life balance in a 100% travel job, the industry-leading training, the way the leadership takes care of their teams, I have never seen anything like it.  

Is the work and travel life easy? No.  ProAutomated is sought out by the biggest names in the Industrial Automation industry to provide highly technical services on cutting edge technology for some of the largest clients in the world.  Is the work rewarding? Absolutely!  Does ProAutomated take care of their people, without a doubt!

ProAutomated is a solid company with great employees. Most people working here are on the younger side (out of college or mid twenties) but it makes for a fast paced and goal driven environment. 

The initial four weeks of training can be a bit strenuous if you have not used ladder logic before but there are lots of resources available and the class instructors are current Engineers working for the company. 

Traveling is not bad as they always seem to be on top of arrangements and the employees keep all the award points from flights/hotels/rentals! 

Overall ProAutomated has been a solid company and provides good opportunities for advancement within the company.
