As the Director of Social Services at a shelter the work can be tremendously challenging but also immensely rewarding. I receive excellent guidance and support from my supervisor and the rest of the Administrative team. I am given flexibility, the ability to be creative with programming, and room to make mistakes and use them as a learning experience. I have seen and felt enormous professional growth in my one and a half years here, and am always being given opportunities to further myself in my career. If you work hard, Project Renewal will work with you; many of my coworkers have been with the organization for years and have gone from being interns to being part of Administrative staff. Take advantage of the opportunities that are offered, show your worth by putting forth the effort, and use your experiences to your advantage. The pay is admittedly not the best (and to be fair, this field isn’t for you if you’re looking for a fat paycheck) but the work culture, benefits (including personal time, vacation, and sick days), opportunity for accelerated advancement and overall environment make up for it. I feel valued as an individual and employee, and not just like another cog in the machine. Overall I would highly recommend Project Renewal to anyone with a strong work ethic who wants to advance quickly in this field.

Turnover was extremely high — but not because the work was exhausting or emotionally demanding. The environment itself was the problem.
	•	Leadership often focused on minor procedural details while ignoring bigger systemic issues that affected both staff and clients.
	•	Feedback or concerns were met with defensiveness or closer scrutiny rather than collaboration.
	•	Safety and operational standards were not always upheld, and raising these issues didn’t seem to result in meaningful change.
	•	Communication from HR and management felt inconsistent, with policies changing frequently and without clear reasoning.
	•	Overall, the leadership culture seemed to prioritize control and optics over trust and empathy, which steadily eroded morale.

A typical day at work, as a peer counselor; is making rounds throughout the facility and touching base with tenants. I go over any concerns, issues, and resources the client may need for personal enrichment and advancement. 

Working in the human services industry, I believe persons with mental health needs are  an especially important population of our society. In my professional journey, I've learned how to communicate better,  find resources, and help in times of client crisis.   

When it comes management, every company has room to improve. 

The workplace culture is very team oriented and someone is always willing to help.

Working ar Project Renewal has been an amazing opportunity from the start of my employment. Within six months of employment as a Residential Aide, I was promoted to Peer Counselor, with a substantial pay raise. The organization provides room for advancement, training services, a Career Advancement Program, and so much more!

The hardest part of the job would be some clients lack of willingness to seek help from the counselor and sometimes having to look for clients when needed.  

The most enjoyable part of the job and what makes my heart smile is when a client and I, reach a new goal, moments of self reflection and clarity, and overall seeing them satisfied with services provided. In addition, I am able to make personal growth. 

Once im clocked in and in full uniform (staff shirt and black or khaki pants) you must read the log book to inform yourself of any activities or incidents that might have happened on the previous shift. Open the book by stating what shift is accepting the facility from the previous shift and making a count of everything inside the office. Start your shift summary by filling in all the blanks. The hardest part of the day is to make sure clients is not trying to sneak food or drinks (alcoholic beverage or anything else besides water) into the facility, Clients would already be drunk and want to fight or argue about a rule that they been knew but forgot because they were under the influence. I had a real good bond or relationship with mostly all the clients in the facility they respected me and did not really guve me a problem. Even though I worked in an substance abuse enviornment i still loved going to work everyday and speaking with clients about their day or their problem because they always came to me for advice. I can say for the most part my supervisors were welcoming and helped with any situation they could except for 1 supervisor he was very snobby and didnt really care for noone but himself. My Director was well mannered and great at her job. She always made sure her staff was taken cared of and had all the training they needed to be the best at their job.

in a typical day at work, you can surely expect high paced medical administrative work. I have learned many skills, most importantly i have acquired a distinct approach to customer service best serving the population we help. We serve the homeless population within NYC as well as those of who are suffering from many types of mental illnesses. These individuals can be frustrated with the predicament they are currently in. Having a humbled approach to customer service as well as being able to adapt to a high paced administrative environment will be needed to succeed in this organization. Due to the nature of the organization management is not very hands on, although they can be reached via telephone at anytime, face to face  interaction with management can be scarce. This is New York city and co-workers can have broad personalities in any field that you choose the same can be said for those individuals here. incredible people all here for a common reason, to help those who are less fortunate. Hardest part of the job consists of not being able to help more than i am physically able to. the most enjoyable aspect is being able to see a person who has over come their misfortunes and truly be able to regain there place within society. happy, healthy and contributing.

This is a great place to start, and gain a lot of great experience. Nevertheless, learn everything you can learn about the providing services to the clients and of the shelter system, and MOVE ON. 

Don't get trapped in the daily drama of the staff around you, because you will be surrounded by pettiness, foolishness, gossiping, at times unfair treatment and unprofessional-ism: it does not matter. 

Management many times will appear under-qualified to be part of the upper administration (and some really are under-qualified), but again learn whatever you can, such as which management skills you should NOT use in the future. You will feel very unsupported by management, because all they seem to care about are client placements into supportive housing and filing the charts. It is okay. Let those experiences build your character, and help you grow as a leader; do not get caught up in it. 

Stay 1-3 years here at most, and move on. It will hurt to leave some good friends you leave behind, but it's part of life and you all will stay connected.

Project Renewal was great with excellent benefits. Co-workers were very helpful to one another. The issue was  some management was not fully qualified to run the program and made a lot of costly mistakes that cost them their contract. 

They hired a lot of young people who didn't have enough life experience to provide the services to client as effectively as needed. There should have been more of a balance with the hiring process..  Project Renewal did provide training which was great but it was a little too late.  

The goals were unrealistic and caused for an unnecessary stressful work environment which didn't have to be the case if management listened to the feedback of staff. 

The flexibility of this remote job is phenomenal but you must have excellent time management skills to meet deadlines.

The job itself is great if this is your field of interest. If you have good work ethic, be prepared to pick up the slack for most of the employees. The staff is incredibly lazy & unprofessional: most sit on their phones all day, and are rude to the clients if asked for something that requires them to get up. The supervisor is usually on their phone all day with the volume up. The 1% that actually does all the work are barely recognized and given the credit they deserve. The staff picks and chooses which clients they will assistant (when they're not busy "moving their car" for the 30th time.) Management seems to be supportive but turn a blind eye on all the wrong things. 

My experience has been a mixed bag, to say the least. On one hand, the atmosphere here fosters excellent teamwork and collaboration among colleagues. The camaraderie within teams truly makes for a supportive and enjoyable work environment.

However, when it comes to career advancement and opportunities for growth, the picture isn't as rosy. Unfortunately, it seems that these opportunities are often influenced by managerial favoritism. Certain individuals appear to receive preferential treatment from higher-ups, which can be disheartening for those who work equally hard but don't seem to get the same recognition.

Despite this drawback, I have found value in the relationships built with my peers and the skills I've gained through teamwork. Yet, it's crucial for management to address the issue of favoritism to ensure a fair and equitable workplace for all employees.

Systemic and operations apparatus is in  consistent development phase but this is due to its growth exceeding its hiring practices. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Welcoming environment with a compassionate culture. Some may not agree at times but this is due in part to the nature or “pain points” of the Human Services industry. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Don’t expect a slow or dull day but personal and family time as well as health care commitments are encouraged - I might even say bordering on required. Employee well-being is one of their highest concerns.
