As a new EISC (Early Intervention Service Coordinator), everything is easy. They have you read the protocols, visit providers and eventually have you shadow a more seasoned SC to prepare you for your first visit. First month you get a case, you have 75 units to bill for and with a quota so low is easily attainable. Each month that quota goes up until month 5 where you're expected to complete 430. 90% of the time you won't have the "proper" amount of cases which leads to more creative ways of getting that magic 430.

The staff at first are somewhat standoffish but after they see you're in the trenches warm up to you. The supervisor micromanages you to the tee and smothers you even if you really don't need the help. The role of the EISC is to meet with the parent, secure consents, assign the provider to do the evaluation, complete the insurance section on  NYEIS, follow up every week with parent and/or provider, once the MDE is uploaded reach out to parent and make sure the provider has someone explain findings to the parent. If the child isn't eligible, you meet with the parent and have them sign to close the case out. If the child is eligible, you meet with the parent and prepare them for the meeting with the city official that will establish how often the child will get the services, where and for how long. After that, you may need to secure a prescription with the child's doctor, search for the agency to provide the service, and follow up every 3 months. On top of that, you need to have 6 month or annual reviews, amendments to add services in-between meetings, and prepare the family for the 3-5 program if the child is over 2.4 years old. All of that for one case, now try managing 35-50 cases between two boroughs.

If you have time off be aware that you will still need to make up units by the end of the month.

The starting salary is $33,000 but after all I described it isn't enough.

I begin most days by coming into the office early to make sure everything is ready. I respond to any messages or email either from  clients, partners or staff.. The majority of my duties include to manage the staff in the field and resolve any issue that may have with clients and or office equipment. I lead a staff training seminar on variety of topics ranging from effective communication with clients to new health  skills protocol. This is a new duty I actively sought out as a way to improve my leadership and presentation.
On a personal level I feel the hardest part of my job was not knowing when to stop and shut off the computer. I find my self more often once I leave my office I am still tethered to work through my phone, emails, concerns, purchases and payments, etc., that need immediate attention from me.
I was so fortunate to be part of team that despite everyone's differences and eccentricities, manages to make everyday at work a stress free work day

The People are cool. You have to remember that you are dealing with low income families and sometimes that means dealing with a certain type of attitude with people. Co-Workers are nice but some nutritionist seem a bit snotty. Management is ok overall. The hardest part is helping people within the guidelines. You can have so much material to work with be only be permitted to say an use so much of because of rules and regulations. Another hard part is when people just flat out ignore you or put you down. The most enjoyable is helping people and educating them, listening to their stories and relating to them. It helps build a peer counselor bond and you can help them better. People tend to listen to others who they can relate better with.  I love educating people and telling them everything they can achieve (in a breastfeeding point of view) as well as learning myself new things

Working at public health solutions was the worst experience of my life. I was placed all the way in Far Rockaway since nobody else was willing to travel out there and the manager did not care how much I struggled to reach the site. Despite complaining about the unsafe location/transportation, the manager refused to change the site and instead scheduled extra home visits for me which didn’t even need assistance. It’s horrible when people have no humanity and take advantage of you by dumping heavy bags on your back and expect you to travel long distances everyday. People should stay away from this company that tells you they’re helping people, yet in reality are using you.

First thing on the morning check e-mails, called families to confirm visits. Submitted documentation from day before visits. Then I started to complete home and follow up on IFSPs, referrals and any pending with the families. I learned to be patient with the families and always look for the strenghts. My co-workers were an excellent group of hard working ladies who were always looking also a way to advance in their careers. The harder part of the job, covience the families was crucial to evaluate the children when any delays were observed. The enjoyable part know the families at the end appreciated the help and see how the children were developing healthy.

This is a NFP that for over 50 years has striven to improve the health and well-being of NYC families, with a particular focus on women and children. Co-workers are dedicated as well to this mission, and management works to keep the mission focused on achieving these goals.
The best part of this job is working with staff, consumers, and outside agencies to improve the survivability of young infants. There is no "hardest" part of the job.

The company does not compensate you for the increasing workload that is put on the staff. They open every Saturday and it is mandatory you work 2 Saturdays.. You get a day off in the week. The health insurance is terrible. They preach about health but don't give their workers proper health insurance. They tolerate bad workers and don't congratulate the good workers . Bad workers have been promoted even though they cant even make it to work on time. Workers are overworked and under paid.

You can gain a lot of experience in Maternal and Child Health. Take all the free trainings you're offered and try to make connections. Use this experience to leverage a better- paying job or stay if you're in school because the staff is wonderful and flexible. 
Unfortunately helping the community is a labor of love and you often have to do it at the expense of your own needs. As with a lot of large nonprofit, there's a chasm between the people at headquarters and those actually carrying out the work and the deliverables. 

This place has a bad turnaround of social workers. They don't last at the east ny clinic. Manager of the clinic is unethical, everyone talks bad about her and she is not supportive. LCSW supervisor is totally different , very professional and supportive. But she is not at that center everyday you have to go for supervision at headquarters.

Management is confused; pettiness is rife; agency seems to have no plan for future; reliant on government funding; heavy silos.

Program staff don't speak to each other. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

People are lied to behind their backs, while being told the agency is all about transparency. 

Very bad morale. Sense of drifting. Much panic over possible loss of government funding.
