Quality Correctional Care

General nursing 12 hour shifts management works M-F (Generally) unless you are a site leader but it gets better be prepared to receive phone calls 24/7 with no relief in sight even when you ask for it. Its 100 % the staffs responsibility to manage all calls/ call outs/ any emergency issues. Most of the staff nurses work alone with over 350+ inmates to serve. DO NOT take a salaried job here you will be worked like a DOG. Management is non-existent, training does not happen, patient care is based on an "if you have time" model many of the facilities sadly rely on dwindling custody staff to get and transport patients to the medical department for care if they have nobody to bring patients nobody gets seen. When you do have meetings with management they don't seem to understand the issues, they are very disconnected with no medical background leading huge amounts of nurses. Leadership on the corporate side is mostly LPNs although experienced in the area they work many of them appear stretched so thin they don't even have time for the staff the manage and it shows when issues arise. In a year of work management visited my site maybe 2 times.

They preach that they want to help inmates and make the system better, but any idea to make anything better is either sat on or shot down. When you have an issue and thru the chain of management to try and get any issue resolved, you are yelled at and told that you are the problem yourself since you’re the only one they are hearing it from and there’s a reason nothing is getting done. It is extremely clickie. The “headquarters” makes you feel like you’re in high school all over again. They talk behind everyone’s back, but can be extremely nice to your face. They make sure to leave people out for vindictive reasons.  They say they don’t like gossip and rumors but the head of the company seems to thrive and make emotional decisions based on them. Do you want to do more to help the company save money? Do you want to help the pharmacy succeed in any way? Don’t. It is expected you pull overtime if someone walks out, and anything extra you do that other coworkers don’t do, for the same amount of money. They want to keep everyone around the same amount of pay is their words when you ask to get compensated for doing more than your job everyday. They will hide all red flags of being a terrible company to work for with paid lunches, drinks, and snacks. Do yourself a favor and stay away. 

The hardest part of my job is when a patient expects every want to be fixed while they are in the custody of the county jails.  The phrase that I hear most often with these patients is “I did not have insurance on the outside, but now that I am here I might as well get it fixed.”  Not all patients are this way, but the few that are make our job hard.  The best part of the job is when you are able to make a difference in a patient’s life.  When we are able to be the voice that they need in order to get someone else to listen.  My job is part ER, part Dr.’s office, part pharmacy, and everything in between.  It is never the same thing 2 days in a row, or even jail to jail.  I feel that the ability to help those that need it the most, is the most rewarding part of my job.  Some patients have had a terrible life since they were very young, others have had a good life until whatever happened that got them into the jail system.  There are no two patients the same, every one’s story is different.  You will be constantly reprioritizing your job and duties, but it is worth it.

They do not care about your time or your family!! If you died your job position would be posted before your obituary!! 10 years and not a blink to make a difference to keep long term loyal employees who are there to do the job for the right reasons..... sad!!

The lack of support for loyal employees who go above and beyond for a company that does not care 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It was like being placed on an island and you wonder into the water and you're drowning and no matter how loud your crys for help are they won't even look down from there tower to throw you a life ring 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressed out.. over worked.. under paid.. and not appreciated

Working in corrections, for the most part, is the same routine every day. Insulin/med pass, seeing pt's for nursing sick call, wound dressing changes, lab draws, V/S, chronic care, etc. We have fantastic providers that travel to sites/jails M-F & are on-call 24/7. I have been with the company for almost 2 years & QCC has been wonderful to me. The owners have very high standards, morals, & values. Working in a jail may not be ideal for some, but incarcerated individuals need health care too, & some times can be very rewarding. Every site/jail is different, but the standard of care that is expected is the same. In all, QCC has been one of the best companies I have had a pleasure of working with/for & I plan on continuing to grow with them for many more years. 

I absolutely love working for QCC! The owner/manager is so kind and really makes you feel like part of the team/family as soon as you start working there. Everyone that I work with is willing to help everyone else and everyone really enjoys their job. This makes for a non-volatile, stable work environment.  The pay is fair but the hours aren't the greatest. But it's absolutely worth it. I would rather work 12 hr shifts, weekends and holidays for a company that respects their  employees then work 8 hours with weekends and holidays off fir a company that doesn't care about their employees.  If you are a nurse or emt I highly recommend working for this company!

Our employees are spread all over the state but we have several ways to communicate and events are planned to bring everyone together on a consistent basis. Quality Correctional Care is like a big family. I enjoy and love what I do for the company. We have awesome site managers and regional nurse managers that are always willing to help! This company has core values that we strive to keep and meet everyday! In this company you are cared about as a person and not just another employee. I couldn't have made a better life choice than my career with QCC!

Working in the corporate office, you see a lot that people in the field don't see. The CEO has incredible vision for the company and looks for anyway to show that of appreciation to her staff. I've had terrible experiences with Family owned company, as I typically worked in the HR department with them, but they treat everybody like family. Nurses are backed up by management and they never let their facilities to get too far without help before they will come in and help themselves. Love the culture here.  

QCC owns contracts with several jails throughout Indiana. I can't speak for all of them, but the site I was at had an amazing culture when I first started. I started just as QCC was taking over the contract and changes started out little, some of them greatly improving procedures that had already been in place. Like with any new company being in place some of the changes were more difficult. Employee benefits and compensation were one of the biggest areas to take an impact. I don't have any other company in the same field to compare them to, but I would shop around knowing what I know now.

The work environment is great like I said before they’re always willing to treat you like family and if you need anything, they’re always there to help

I started at eight sometime 730 and don’t get home until about six but I don’t have any children so it’s not an issue for me
