QuidelOrtho Corporation

I originally got hired through my agency (Eastridge). For my first manufacturing job I was very intimidated, but I felt very welcomed from the staff and most of management. They really do take the time to help you learn the machines inside and out and encourage you to ask questions whenever you are unsure about anything. 
 When my assignment began, I started alongside 20-25 others and we were scheduled to work 4 days a week 10 hour shifts (3:30pm-2:00am), start pay was $22 and overtime was $33 . However, it is difficult to feel stable because you dont know what machines/jobs you would be working on each shift and some operators would just run the machine but not take the time to actually train you. Over time everyone that was hired  through an agency was either transferred to a different location or let go regardless of how many machines they were signed off on, attendance, personality, longevity etc. You really dont know if yesterday was your last day. The schedule eventually changed to 5 days a week 2:30-11pm (8 Hours) which is the actual schedule for 2nd shift employees and there is no room for flexibility. If you have a second job, go to school etc. you will have to prioritize working for them if you want to stay. Overtime is also frowned on so there is a good amount of pressure to learn the machines and avoid any critical errors that could extend your job. 
 Overall it is a great company to work for and some managers make it feel fun at times, but if you are looking to become permanent/ long-term I would not recommend. I have personally seen various individuals who were just as qualified if not more so than me suddenly gone. No matter how many machines you learn, how well you work with others, how well your attendance is the criteria to become permanent seems baffling.

There are many pros to working at Ortho. Benefits, PTO, Culture, No micromanagement and Creative Freedom are just some I can list off the top of my head. 
When you first start at ortho you are given 2 weeks of vacation (becomes 3 weeks when you begin your 3rd year at the company) , 2 weeks of sick pay, and 12 holidays off- all PTO obviously - even if you are hourly. 

There is a 6% match up to 75% to the company 401k plan after 1 year of service. There is anywhere from a 5-10% minimum yearly bonus for all employees depending on performance reviews with company modifiers (last year i received a 15% bonus due to the company performing exceptionally well). Everyone gets a 2-5% yearly cost of living pay increase. 

Alongside compensation, there is a good ladder to climb within the company. The formal goal setting process allows for high achieving employees to be noticed and fast tracked for promotions. Grad school is also paid for if you choose to go that route

New merger with Quidel potentially bringing ominous changes to Ortho. Quidel puts the employee first rather than the customer, and there’s no saying if that’s a net positive or negative. This new merger has some dark undertones as the amount of holidays off was reduced. As of right now there are no other changes to the benefits, but that will more than likely change. 

But many within the company are speculating the merger will result in loss of bonuses, reduced sick days, potential for reduced salaries (as seems evident by Quidel’s pay structure), reduction in 401k benefit and company culture that emphasizes micromanaging. At Ortho, many employees stay with the company for 5,10,15,20 years. There are bi -weekly retirement parties on site. This is because of all the great benefits and opportunities afforded to us by

The position is for a paper pusher and does not allow for any decision making.  You prepare a contract and pass along to someone else.  If a $700K deal included a $100 reduction or credit then it had to be reviewed by the Director's committee.

I started working 19.5 hours per week and was asked if I would like to work 40 hours per week and responded yes.  It took over 4 months.  Then they informed me they would like me as a permanent employee, if I was interested and they will obtain the proper approvals.  This process took 6 months and the only reason is someone left the company, so they had no real plans to add me as permanent employee.

I applied and was provided an offer sheet to review.  The offer was $35,000 - $45,000 under market.  We discussed and I explained that the offer was no where near market salary.  The response was the offer had to remain in line with the other Sr. Contracts Managers, which all are  located in Rochester, NY.  I explained that Rochester, NY has an approximately 45% lower cost of living rate.  Response was they may be able to raise salary $5,000.

It was a strange environment.  The team was great and assisted with any request or help I needed.  Once everyone went to their work area you did not see them again during the day.  

There were a couple of contracting systems but neither one could produce a contract from start to finish.  

Really not enough work to remain busy.

This is my opinion...just want to get this legality out of the way.

This company truly is bottom of the barrel.  Everything is wrong with this company:  Disorganized, imbecile departments, no team work, no culture, no leadership, no efficiency, no strategy, no prescriptive analysis, nothing.  Absolutely nothing.

Remember, Quidel was just a 300 employee organization until they acquired Alere in 2017, which was 500+ employee.  What's wrong with this picture?  Quidel did not organically grew to 1000+ employees but GOT LUCKY and grew through acquiring Alere.  What does this mean?  They did not have the skills, competency, culture, know-how to grow their business.  They brought in consultants to help fix, to no avail, the cultural, efficiency and technical issues, and recruiting and poaching talent from more established companies.  Even with their talent acquisition program, the talent is not staying long term....because management, at all levels, do not know how to lead, which resulted in key scientists and employees at Alere leaving in droves.  It is quite a sorry sight to behold.

Lastly, Quidel loves to blind side employees.  Employees, at all levels, will walk in one morning to find out they are terminated without warning.  Yep, they do this to VP's and Directors, too.  Because Quidel does not have an official performance review employees do not know how well they are performing and get terminated.

Trust me, the money ain't worth it.

My experience at QuidelOrtho was bad. There are some genuinely good people who care about their work, and the company itself does have potential. Unfortunately, the culture is extremely toxic, and that overshadows everything else. A typical day often involved navigating unnecessary stress, intimidation, Bullying, and inconsistent leadership. Management regularly hires unqualified friends and protects them, while employees who actually care about the work are pushed aside or driven out.

Favoritism is blatant, and if you’re not part of their inner circle, you’re treated poorly. Integrity is lacking at nearly every level, and basic respect is often missing. Many leaders use their titles to belittle others instead of leading with competence or fairness.

The People/HR team does not uphold the policies or values they preach. Instead of supporting employees, they often contribute to the hostile environment. It takes a toll on mental health, and the turnover rate says everything you need to know.

A few coworkers made the experience tolerable for a while, but overall, this was the worst work environment I’ve ever been in.

jnj days are gone. Temps come and go like a revolving door. Even employees that have been there for years quit. I came back hoping it would be worth my time but the pay was a joke. Even with my past experience with the work. 

Lots of room for advancement and learning but don't expect a pay raise. Do more work! Take on more responsibility, have a great attitude but dont be rewarded with a good raise. The management in my particular area of formulation was awesome! But I understand the fact that he couldn't give me compensation for experience with they can just hire another Yahoo from the street tomorrow and put him through training for less pay. It's a shame the co workers were awesome!! The work itself very interesting and team oriented I would've stayed a long time provided it payed my bills. But it didn't, first raise after busting my butt for a year with extremely minimal  mess ups and a great review. A whopping .30 cents thanks keep it I'm gone. 

On the plus side if you're 17 years old and don't care about paying you're non existent mortgage it's great! And the benefits are the absolute best I've ever had. One saving grace. 401k match at 75 percent of the first 6percent was amazing.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at QuidelOrtho was the clean and organized environment,supportive team,and opportunities to gain experience in pharmaceutical production

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was the frequent staff shortages and lack of proper training.Which made it harder to keep up with production demands.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is clean and organized.Most coworkers are friendly and helpful,but due to frequent staff  turnover , the overall culture can feel a bit rushed and understaffed at times.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involved preparing materials, operating filling machines, inspecting product quality, completing batch records, and maintaining a clean workspace. Sometimes I had to rotate to different stations depending on production needs.

OCD is a wonderful place to work. The management is very knowledgeable and the company is really improving so it is a great place to be right now. However, there are people who have been contracted through this company for upwards of 15 years ad not "hired" into the company itself. Some of these employees do not receive benefits such as health care, paid time off, sick time, or holiday pay. For the amount of education required to even land an entry level position here, I find this to be extremely insulting to the employees who are still in these contract positions. If you require a bachelors degree, you are looking for professionals who should be getting benefits that anyone working at McDonalds full-time does.
Like I said the people you work with are great and the actual jobs are very interesting, just a slap in the face to put your time and effort into a company that obviously does not value you enough to hire you on full time and give you benefits that are much deserved.

A typical day at work.
 - Early start- open up labs and initialize all equipment
 - Systems check on all equipment
 - Evaluate New software / Hardware / Mechanical as required.
 - Such great technology  / atmosphere / before i knew it the day would be gone and it would be time to go. - Everyday was an amazing day

 - Management - excellent , worked closely with you as many used to have the positions in each department , so they lived it and know just what you have to  work with each and every day.  They fully understood and would easily give input to help you learn , grow , and advance everyday.

Workplace Culture - none better . made to feel right at home from day one , moment one , felt like you had been there for years

Hardest Part of the Job - Having to go home at night

Most Enjoyable Part of the Job - knowing i get to come back tomorrow and share all of this with everyone all over again. Great facility , exceptional technology , amazing co workers , trainers , teachers ,
