A typical workday is going to a worksite at a location around a BNSF rail location. The RWIC which is you will setup yellow/red  and red boards to protect a third party work crew working on the rail or within 25 ft of the rail. You will talk to the dispatcher and the beginning of the shift and the end of the shift and talk to approaching train crews and to all crews working on and around the railroad site to make sure they are in the clear of the rail.  I would go back to work there in a second I liked the job thoroughly I was let go because I was not proficient enough using the Samsung Tablet everything you do for the job goes through that tablet and you have a short time to learn how to use it. I had 20 plus years as a Locomotive Engineer and am 60 yo so maybe that had something to do with me not being able to use the tablet quick enough but very disappointed with being let go it was the best job I ever had. So you must have a good knowledge of the railroad, terminology and how it operates it would be best if you had worked in the Maintenance of way department those seem to have a better understanding of what’s expected within the job and how it operates but I would go back in a second if they would rehire me. The jobs range from 50 to 70 hours a week. I did not ever work any Saturdays or Sundays in the two months I worked there. I worked mostly Form B protection you go out an hour before the form b starts and put up the yellow/red boards and then the red boards. The lone worker would protect maybe one or two men like a survey crew working around the rail to notify of an approaching train, also companies working on bridges over the rail to get all them in the clear before the train arrives. The other con is you need to have a pickup because your required to use your own vehicle because you must carry at leas 8 six foot long steel posts in your vehicle and your probably going to put 20k miles a year on your vehicle. They pay you for your mileage and a stipend for your meals daily that is not taxable. So if you don t have a family or have to go back home frequently then you can easily make over 100k a year. The manager I had worked with me getting home frequently so I don t have hardly anything negative to say about Railpros I was shocked when I was let go. I would go back in a second!!




I'm writing this Out of frustration and concerns of management and the way employees are treated.

Favoritism, it is very obvious that some employees are treated better than others and shown leniency to other employees that are treated with lesser infractions. An example, an employee Who may or may not have broken a rule was forced to go to the office for rules class.While other employees absolutely broken a rule it would not require to attend retraining nor held accountable.
These incidents lowers the morale and undermines The trust and management, is very clear that management are unable or unwilling to listen to our concerns. When we have voiced, our concerns we are yelled at, this is unacceptable.

Schedule, we were told by management do your jobs right and receive this contract  We'll make sure that you work close to home.
 This is a broken promise. Some employees are forced to drive over a 100 miles 1 way.  When there is a job just miles away, some employees see family 3 or less hours daily. This is not the quality of life for the family. It contradicts the statements made by management.Like when we first got hired they said we are all about family yet another promise broken.

Pay, we are RWIC and constantly being told that you are the most important person on the job site. You provide safety and more likely a safety advocate for the contractors. Yet we are paid the lowest after signing this contract. We were receiving 6 meal penalties in our work day.  That was taken away without explanation or rather a satisfactory explanation. We are given more and more responsibilities daily. Yet our pay remains lower.

In closing, most of us are ready to stage a walk out on the scrra property unless our concerns are addressed. We would rather not  do this, but at this point we feel that we have no other choice. 

Working for Railpros
Railpros used to be a good place to work management was, and seem to be on your side in time management grew apart from their employees. working for Railpros they put a lot of unnecessary stress on their employees requiring them to do training, and/or various other things that Metrolink does not require all of us here. I think that management has to change. We are always told that if we don’t like it, then we can quit, which is no way that management should talk to an employee there has been favoritism at this place, which management is either blind to or just don’t care when rules are broken they try to cover up not to talk about it as a group they are constantly trying to micromanage not having trust and us doing our job which they had trained us for we were promised when we retained a new contract that we would be working closer to home, which that was another failed promise we all work crazy hours as they. They do talk about safety but yet here we are workdays nights back to days our drive time is next to crazy where we’re driving 3 to 5 hours daily, and at the same time there is little to no type of concern let alone compensation from being away from home also, no quality of life so that we could spend time with our families we used to be given six penalty periods a day that was taken away from us with no explanation. We have been given a lot more responsibility with no more pay , and yet they think this is fair we are all in someway talk down to, and that is no way to speak with an employee 

In a career that has so far spanned more than 30 years, I believe I am qualified to make a good assessment of an engineering consultant firm. RailPros is a good company to work in for the following reasons: 1) RailPros is singularly focused on what they do and they are very good at it, 2) RailPros has developed a good reputation with their clients as well as other firms they frequently team with, 3) RailPros is deeply involved with all aspects of the railroad and transit sectors of the transportation industry; they (like the tracks they design and work on) will be around for a long, long time, 4) RailPros has an approach to things that is practical and makes sense--not overly sophisticated, 5) RailPros has a culture that is welcoming to hard-working and dedicated professionals who thrive in the type of work environments that they provide, 6) RailPros seeks out the best talent and endeavors to keep them by demonstrating that they value them, 7) RailPros adopts a G3 motto of "Go, go, go!" and doesn't punish those who take initiative, 8) There is room for growth with RailPros and the growth is possible at multiple levels within the firm, 9) When they say safety first, they mean it and 10) They realized my value and potential to bring in more work for them and have fully embraced me, allowing flexibility in my work location and travel schedule. I like it here and am planning on retiring here.

This is the greatest company field of work I have ever been a part of. This is my fifth year and I’ve seen a lot of other come and go because the railroad life isn’t for everyone. You get to meet various aspects of the rail industry who are decent salt of the earth people. Most people are honest and open and respect your position as a flagman responsible for their safety. Though that’s not always the case this company and its management supports you when you have to enforce rules and safety standards. A high sense of responsibility and attention to detail is greatly required so it can be stressful but with the right mindset it can easily be endured. If you have a young family like me work life balance is difficult to manage but this management are very flexible in allowing requests for days off but during slow seasons you have to take the work that’s available until things pick back up. The only downside I’ve had to endure is not knowing where and when you will work the next day from time to time but was mostly never scheduled more than an hour away from home which was very convenient. 

I have worked for RailPros 10 years and just resigned (it was time to garden full-time). I never had a problem with RailPros management in my time. They expect good work ethic, professional, and safety,  protection for workers and railroad. They pay you for everything you do. You work as a team the culture is such. You are basically your own boss  managing your own jobsite.  As mentioned protection, protection, protection. I can't say enough good about my experience with RailPros. Travel meeting the contractors. Inquiring about their life just life in general getting to know them and them you. One thing you have backing from management if you think something isn't correct ASK they are there for you. NEVER act with uncertainty. With this job you are part of a team not only with management but at times you work with other flaggers on same jobsite.  The camaraderie with fellow flaggers is good all are eager to help. I would 
recommend this job to those who have good work ethic be on time communicate with others and as always think safety. RailPros wants you to go home at end of day healthy and your family wants that also. 

You will be away from home as you are contracted to jobsites anywhere in your region, which can include multiple states, from one day up to several months. You are on-call. Training pay is horrible, but jumps to $22/hr once field certified and up to $35 after about six months. Job security or as I see it- a paycheck, isn't consistent as you are a contractor and if there are no jobs assigned you have no paycheck... You'll go pay periods (weekly) without pay due to no work. Management and supervisors come across as supportive, but never answer your calls or respond to your voice messages or texts; better off calling a co-worker. It be beneficial if they were upfront when questioned if any work is lined up...allows to plan ahead without a paycheck. Job Culture is 50/50. remain positive and associate yourself with positive people. There are other contractors who try to burn you to management. *If you get on a long-term job assignment money is great. **Don't turn down a job assignment.

Apply with caution! Job seems great at first Interview will go great then the day you get hired managements true colors will show. 

On the first day you will be reminded that you are a at will employee, and on a weekly basis you’ll be reminded that you could be fired at any time for any mistake. 

All paperwork, driving incidents, job sites, and all of your decisions are micromanaged by management sitting from their homes. 

Every two weeks there is a conference call to bring up all issues of mistakes, nothing positive about what employees have done correctly.

Driving is stressful since you work long hours and flipping from days to nights and nights to days and your GPS and your camera is being watched every turn or every time you hit the gas or brake pedal too hard. 

Management made us believe if we worked hard and did extra paperwork that we would all get a raise from gaining the new contract. The only one who got a raise and bonus was management, while the hard-working employees took a huge pay cut. 

If you’re looking for a job look elsewhere. 

Do not get conned into this company like everyone else. They make the job sound great and said  you’ll make all kinds of money, we support our employees it’s a great job. All lies, once your here their true personality comes out which is, talk down to your employees in a disrespectful way, micro management to the MAX!, you make one little mistake on paperwork or inputting your pay, they’ll accuse you of stealing or the way you drive since there are GPS and cameras in all the vehicles. You will be written up for any little error or they will threaten to fire you constantly. If you like sitting in hours of traffic with no pay, endless paperwork, disrespectful management that will always be against you for everything you do, being watched with a camera all day and then micro managed while they sit at home this is the perfect job for you. Most employees don’t make it much longer than 3 years that’s not a good look on Rail Pros.
