I was hired as a web developer here and it quickly became apparent I was replacing a web developer that quit abruptly. As I worked there for a couple months I heard stories of developers quitting abruptly, some leaving their laptops at the door and quitting without notice.

I was thrust onto the project that the previous developer quit on. The project was poorly managed, the PM let it drag on with the client for almost a year without progressing past the wireframe stage of a major website redesign and rebuild.

When the project was finally approved for development, I was given a deadline of 3 weeks to build and code a 50+ page website from scratch. After the first week, the 3 weeks was then cut to two weeks. I was thrown under the bus as a developer, a year to approve wireframes and design, then just 2 weeks to build it seemed incredibly unreasonable of an ask. 

I worked morning, noon and night on this project, on repeated occasions staying up for 24 - 48 hours straight coding and building this site. The CEO keep saying "I know this is unreasonable but please just get us to the finish line" and I did, I did delivered the site on time. I went back and calculated the hours work and my base salary and it worked out to far less than minimum wage for my effort and time.

The kicker was, once the project was done and rebel got their payday, they laid me off. Their senior design manager was weak in her skillset, she was uploading raw images to use on the website, I am talking 30-50mg giant images that should have been optimized down to 30-50k. After a 48 hour shift I noticed this problem and told her to stop, she took offense and made a big issue of me being difficult. I then had to spend another 12 hours deleting her giant images, and optimizing and resizing them to work with web best practices. They said me being difficult was the reason for the lay off, they never addressed her poor performance as a designer uploading ridiculously large images for web viewing and creating more work for a web developer already stretched way too thin.

They used me to get a big contract done that they mismanaged, and then rather than reward my hard work and effort, they laid me off over some BS. That tells you the moral fiber of this ceo and company culture. If you are comfortable with kissing butt and sucking up to the ceo then you can probably work out there, but if you are like me and have a backbone and a moral compass that points true, avoid this place like the corona virus.

It turns out there are agencies with truly positive, authentic, motivating and empowering cultures! I recently left another large agency in the area and after only a few weeks, I realized I had made the right move. Rebel's staff are truly rebels — we see things differently, aren't confined by typical agency processes, use data to inform our ideas and recommendations, are fully transparent with each other and our clients, and just genuinely enjoy working together. The leadership is extremely positive and inspiring — the momentum is real at Rebel. The talent and deliverables constantly impress me months later, and I'm just so proud to be a part of this rapidly-growing agency.

Rebel is the place that will give you a shot on even the most impossible ideas. It's a place where you can revolutionize the industry on a small scale, but will help you make your mark in the vertical at large too. I've always heard that if you're the smartest person in the room- you're not in the right room. Rebel is full with people who check their ego at the door and collaborate to create something really powerful. I genuinely love my life at Rebel. The culture is incredible.

The hardest part of the job is that every day is challenging, but rightfully so. The clients are industry leaders with real barriers, so it makes sense.

Rebel was the first agency I worked for after 10+ years on the brand side. I wanted to expand my marketing skill set and knowledge and this agency allowed me to do just that. My peers came from all different marketing backgrounds and I had the opportunity to learn a ton and become a better marketer overall. Flexibility to work remotely a few days a week is a plus.

Fast paced environment. Everyone who works there is supportive and friendly. You get to work with some high profile accounts as well as smaller more local accounts.

Their public-facing "culture" is far different than reality. Ethics are not the first (or second, or third) priority for the CEO/owner. Would not trust this firm as an employee or as a client.
