Red Cross

The American Red Cross is a great organization. Just do not work there as an employee. Be a volunteer or blood donor instead. Management is horrible. Once you finish your subpar training they sign you off and then make you work mandatory overtime. I was even scheduled to work on my days off. The union is only there for the longtime employees. The new union contract took away our holiday and sick bank hours and gave us PTO hours. The new contract also took away our 37.5 hr work week, and gave only the senior employees a 3% raise. New employees got a measly 1.25% raise and no dental insurance for one year. Also, the union forced everyone to join their Team Care insurance plan. My premiums went from $22 a month to $48 a month. When you interview over the phone and in person management only tells and shows you the positive aspects of the job. Nobody told me I would have to work Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. What a disappointing experience!!! Now I know why the American Red Cross was under a consent decree for 25 years. The American Red Cross does so much good which is why it hurts to write this review. I never worked for a company or organization that was so poorly managed. So sad!

A typical day at red cross was helping people in need by reaching out to communities and  organizations across our nation with donations of blood and platelets products. We explain the donation process and  the difference in the procedures and how the product is used and what's it's use for to donors, Input personal information schedule their appointment at a convenient donation center, we let new donors know that they will get a follow up call about their experience.Scheduling active or former donor and make reminder call for up coming appointments so that Red Cross supplies are well stock for on going emergencies and taken in new donor who wants to help with the dedication of helping to save lives. I'v learned skills that will help me move into the next phase office/administration  scheduling,follow-ups,log-in of data and the maintenance of record keeping

They have a very comprehensive understanding of the value of service in your local community.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You might feel stressed the first few days depending on where your assignments take you, but it’ll prepare you for bigger things like deploying overseas if that’s something you are interested in.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Collaborative and light hearted 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I wait for the people who run my division to text me about openings in the weekly schedule. I’m on call for a six hour shift and respond when I’m feeling up to the challenge. Usually I’ll find myself in an old neighborhood in the inner city, but the Red Cross can take you just about anywhere.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I worked with a great team that was willing to encourage each other.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes members were running late and sometimes members had impromptu engagements that were of more importance which made it difficult to coordinate red cross events.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Family type  because members always take care of one another.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As a volunteer, members meet at the end of the day at least once a week to discuss any past events and how it was and plan the upcoming events and designate duties. By the end of the meeting there are jokes and catching up to do.

Unless you fall into a completely successful existing territory, you are set up for failure. Goals are unattainable in territories that have not met goals in the past, have had revolving door of account managers,  14 hour days, zero work life balance, overwhelming stress levels, low salary, non existent bonus structure because everyone on the team needs to meet goal and it can not happen with unrealistic goals. MANAGEMENT ONLY CARES ABOUT THE NUMBERS AND HAS ZERO CONCERN NOR APPRECIATION FOR THE EMPLOYEES . If you don't make your numbers, you're gone,next person in, they don't make goals,  they're gone and so on ....you believe in the mission of helping to save lives and think that's what it is all about however you literally get your life sucked out of you....

Management needs to encourage new ideas for implementation from line staff. HQ Management is disconnected from some of the challenges for line staff in regions. The Work Instructions and Job Aids, etc. are often confusing and hard to immediately find information. Move towards an electronic system instead of hardcopy binders for staff to retrieve information quicker and easier.

-my day at work .i usually have a busy day at work because i have to attend several duties i.e field works and general office work. 
-i have learnt so many things:
1.data collection
2.community total led sanitation.
3. Response to different types of disaster management
4. Tree planting and tree nursery management..
The management is very good.
The culture is more of helping the needy .
The hardest part is when you visit a community member but they respond in a harsh way.
the most enjoyable part of the when i have delivered to the community .

Lack of funds available to help people and coordination with others who are more knowledgeable and experienced.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Quiet and busy depending on what is going on with the schedule.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Set up work area and computer, review the daily tasks and get to work. Answer phone calls, file paperwork and restock office. End of shift clean up and head home.

Travel is an everyday requirement, in which, you do get reimbursed.
No lunch breaks, only (2)15 mins breaks, if at all.
Training is torturous! 6 long weeks of sitting and reading. Not very much hands on training at all.
I learned the most by the mistakes I made, due to failure of proper training.
Definitely has a great cause and mission. Was very rewarding to hear patients stories and why they were doing what they were doing.
With the right management team, I do believe this would be a much much better place to work!

I feel I am doing a service to my community and feel I am essential worker. It is a great company to work for. The medical and 401K plan and retire planning is five star. It is a world renown organization. There really is no bad working at this company. Pay is reasonable too. It is an organization the does quite a bit for the United States and in world society. It has many functions, most people feel it is an extension of the U.S. government, but it is not. It is an non-profit entity that is nor affiliated with the U.S government.
