Region Ten Community Services Board

I worked at Region Ten for nearly five years in multiple roles. I am grateful for my time there and find myself better off professionally for it. 

I found my work days to be both enjoyable and purpose filled. The organization provided me numerous opportunities to do meaningful work in a community that I care about. It was a workplace that I was proud to say I was a part of when asked "Where do you work?", and I felt that the work I was doing was making a difference for those I served.

The culture was positive. Like any job, there can be stressful days, but I found myself supported by my coworkers and management. Self-care was prioritized and I felt heard when I expressed my needs. People enjoyed being there and it lacked the toxicity that can ruin a workplace environment. 

Management on the department level was strong. All of the supervisors I had brought leadership, focus, and experience to our team. They guided us to success and helped develop both the programs we were in and our professional growth as employees.  

From the senior leadership side of things, I was always impressed with how effective they were during difficult times, and how much they truly cared about both the community and the employees. Even during times when it seemed like every place in the country was struggling, leadership still prioritized employees getting fair compensation increases/bonuses, and did not compromise our values or mission in the process. They always sought to keep expanding our mission as a whole and grow what we do.

Benefits/Compensation were quite good and anyone who sticks around for more than three seconds will see their paycheck and their retirement grow beautifully.

Was every day perfect? Of course not. But the common thread for me was simple: If I brought a poor attitude to work, or was not doing the things I needed in my own life to make sure I was in a physically/mentally good space, then I made my work life difficult. If I brought a good attitude to work, and was taking care of myself physically and mentally, then my work life was great. I'd imagine this rings true for anyone else that works here. 

Nothing but gratitude for my time with the company and the people there.

My current position as an Adult Mental Health Case Manager entails working with adults who have severe mental illness(es) such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Personality Disorders, and more. I work on a very strong team who are all supportive, helpful, and willing to jump in to help other staff. The job requires extensive knowledge of Medicaid regulations to include meeting strict deadlines on a regular basis. Case Managers have approximately 40 cients on our caseloads. We are required to develop and implement Individualized Service Plans for each client, complete progress notes, handle crisis situations, complete quarterly reports, complete applications for Medicaid, Disability, Housing, and Social Services benefits. We enter all information into our Electronic Health Record on a daily basis. Typical days would be at desk completing paperwork or going into the community to meet with our clients. We are also required to take mandatory trainings regularly. The hardest part of my job is dealing with angry clients. I handle it well as I have had years of experience and number one is to not take it personally. When clients are in crisis and Case Managers have to assist, it can be very time consuming but rewarding. Meeting deadlines for paperwork can also be very challenging. The most enjoyable part of my job is knowing I have helped clients to learn to live independently with their mental illnesses - teaching them various skills to navigate throughout the community.

The current state of affairs within the company reveals a disconcerting truth: the company harbors ill intentions. It has become glaringly apparent that there is a dire need for more diversity and consistency within its ranks. The turnover rate in the administrative department has skyrocketed, leaving everyone questioning the thoughts of the executive director is as conspicuous as it is concerning. This unsettling situation calls for urgent action, as it is evident that the upper leadership must be held accountable for their actions—or inactions—in addressing these pressing issues. By fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment and ensuring consistent leadership, the company can begin to rectify its ill intentions and work towards a more equitable and productive future. When reflecting upon this company, it is disheartening to find that no positive aspects readily come to mind. From its operations to its leadership, the company seems to lack any redeeming qualities. Its actions and decisions often exhibit questionable ethics and disregard for employee well-being. The work environment feels toxic and demoralizing, fostering a sense of disillusionment and frustration among its workforce. Innovation and growth appear stunted, with an absence of visionary leadership or a clear path forward. Regrettably, this company leaves a lasting impression of disappointment and a void of any positive attributes.

In my work, I get to help others with a wide range of concerns. The environment is supportive and understanding. They provide opportunities for training and growth. I moved up in many positions and worked in crisis, substance recovery and outpatient. This gave me the opportunity to find my niche without job jumping. They provide FREE supervision for those pursing certifications and licenses. I have got free individual and group supervision weekly consistently. My hard work was seen and valued. They did lots of things to celebrate their employees on holidays which made the atmosphere fun. The coworkers are caring to each other and provide person centered and holistic care to their clients. They honor and respect their clients using preferred names and pronouns. The only con is that the work is low paid due to the community service base model and providing services to clients at low cost or no cost but they have provided bonuses and raises every year recently. I believe that management is giving back to its staff in every way they can. I also had the opportunity to work PRN for other departments that increased my paycheck substantially. If you want to get to work with a wide diversity of people then Region Ten is for you. If you want to help others that have barriers to mental health care, then Region Ten is for you. If you are driven by mission then Region Ten is the place for you. 

My typical day begins with anxiety and ends with anxiety. The director of the program is HORRIBLE. She is inflexible, unable to communicate her needs, rude, and a bully. It sucks when your boss tells you to your face that everyone else is better than you. The things I learned from Region Ten are minimal; I only gained skills in leadership and Canva. Region Ten continues to amaze me with how poor the culture is-it just continues to get worse. This is an agency that doesn't care about or respect its clients, and it certainly doesn't do the same for its employees. The agency will use you to get what they want (work for little benefits) and replace you when you are unable to perform. The hardest part of this job is management. If you are looking to learn, this is NOT the team to do it with. Mark my word, the first mistake you make will be your last with this management team.  I get no joy working here, so there have been no enjoyable parts of my job. I left one bad job, and went to a worse one! The benefits are horrible as well. Employees are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued. If you value your sanity and dignity, DO NOT work for Region Ten and Prevention in particular! I would not recommend this agency or position to a friend. 

I worked for R10's WRC for about 5 years and loved it.  I entered as a Community Services Associate (residential technician) and would have loved to pursue a job as a recovery specialist there once I got my degree, but changed geography.  I gained a tremendous amount of experience working with individuals with mental health and medical needs all along the spectrum, and especially working with individuals in crisis, with a plethora of stressors.  I also had the opportunity to learn a great deal about individual, group, and family therapy by co-facilitating groups, participating in staff meetings, and working alongside some very talented and dedicated therapists.  Also, not every workplace cares about your self-care, but this one does.

To have an opportunity to work with people from various backgrounds and credentials who are dedicated to helping people improve their lives.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Occasionally some staff will be discharged and the majority of employees do not know why. Transparency is expected for front line staff, but some senior directors are not transparent with reasons for some policy decisions.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly work environment mostly. Cultural diversity is supported and expected. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is completing progress notes and updating and completing required chart work  for case load. Preparing for treatment groups, performing assessments, referral to programs, facilitating treatment groups, trainings, and other work as directed.

A typical day at work ebbed and flowed with adolescent needs to attend to. I learned that not everything would be checked off the to do list even on a good day, but rather the best day had progress and chaos in equal parts. Program Managers at Region Ten were incredibly supportive and provided excellent supervision; however, the nature of bureaucracy sometimes resulted in a slowness or delay of communication/decisions. The workplace culture was one that encouraged self-care, as well as open dialogue and collaboration. The most enjoyable part of the job was the kids I got to work with; the least enjoyable part the systems outside of my control that adversely affected them, most often school and family.

Despite the financially and morally incompetent  leadership team the staff provides the best care possible.
The leadership is out of touch with the counselors, case managers, frontline staff and the clients needing services.  They don’t give accurate information regarding required paperwork to staff and then threaten staff for their lack of communication. 
Due to their Financial mismanagement they decided to cut services to clients during COVID 19, so they can protect their significant higher salaries with less pain than the workers. It is not the first time that they covered up their mismanagement with firing workers.

Didn’t have a good experience at all.  No regular supervision was provided to support me as a new manager.  Nothing ever mattered unless you were a higher up leader- they had all the control and made decisions without even knowing the staff members.  Grossly underpaid and moved within region ten for zero percent pay raise despite going form a small program to a very large program and working way beyond 40 hours a week.  I was told flat out no raise would be given and no reason was provided.
