HCA Midwest Health can be a wonderful place to work at based on which department you are in, as with any workplace. A majority of the employees have a genuine interest in doing their job well and helping their patients, which makes daily work enjoyable and effective.  Benefits are phenomenal, other than somewhat limited PTO (use of PTO is required for holidays).  I was very well compensated as a middle manager.  HCA's leadership development resources/training are wonderful - it is very apparent that HCA is making a strong effort to better train their management and leadership, which is encouraging to staff at all levels.  
Unfortunately, there is significant variability in the quality, competence and effectiveness of upper leadership, which eventually causes there to be an excessive amount of pressure on middle management, causing good middle managers to burn-out quickly and leave.  Although HCA has a great leadership training program, there is much room for improvement in HCA's consistent assessment of upper leadership effectiveness - essentially, I saw very little effort to ensure that leaders were practicing the principles/workflows that they were trained on. If you have a great Director, then this may not pose an issue for you.  If that is not the case, it can pose some serious hardships for you in your role.  I have an optimistic hope that HCA Research Medical Center will get past this - there are some really great people here - there just needs to be a removal of ineffective upper/middle leadership to allow those departments to fully flourish.  If you are considering a management position with HCA, I would be very observant of who your Director is and how they will/won't support you, as that will be your success-limiting factor.  Otherwise, HCA is great.

You get there by 5:30am and you get your patients diet menus together and you make the doctors have not change there diet orders also you then prepare the breakfast foods and get ready to serve the patients. After a while you get the cash ready for the visitors cafe part. Then you check to see that all staff is there and that their are no call ins. If so, you call to see if any prn workers are available.You have to set the trays up for the patients and then server them to the patients. After that you go collect the menus for the patients and check to see if they need any snacks or supplements.You would then pick trays up and take to the dish washer area. You would do this for three meals. Also you would also stock the floor units and er area. At the end the night you would collect the cash and count it and deposit it into the safe,and then you would check staff work areas before letting them leave.

Job work culture is terrible unless you are a nurse. Any other job title, they will treat you like you are worthless and just another body especially if you’re a housekeeper/ janitor. 

I got blamed by my supervisor for a schedule shift change that we discussed 3 days prior do to another coworker taking a vacation day.

Day of the shift change I got called by my supervisor said wondering why i wasn’t there for my normal shift and they didn’t “recall our conversation” about us discussing me filling in for someone else. After hanging up, they called me immediately after saying, “oh i do remember now” in a condensating tone. They made me feel like I was lying about the whole situation and the supervisor should have more empathy towards their workers. And as a supervisor, they should have better organizational skills to prevent miscommunication mishaps as this. 

When I worked there at first, I was the pharmacist in charge of all of the investigational medications and studies conducted on site.  When I became a full time employee, my shift was the evening shift.
I compounded the chemotherapy medications for the oncology department in-patients.  I also supervised the technicians in the IV room.  I was also responsible for maintaining the perpetual narcotic inventory for the hospital.  I was also on of the compounding pharmacists on staff for sterile and non sterile products.  The co-workers were the most professional and helpful people that I had ever worked with in a clinical surrounding.  The hardest part of the job was leaving to move out of the area.  The most enjoyable part of the job was working with my fellow professionals.

I loved the job itself, but management is pathetic. Unfortunately, I learned that no matter how hard you work, how well you do your job, how loyal and dedicated of an employee you are, they do not support you or have your back. Their “zero tolerance” rule is a joke. The security staff are worthless. Ask them how many cars were vandalized and/or stolen from their parking garage. Unfortunately, I was one of many victims. My car was broken into to be stolen, but instead they horribly vandalized it. Security claims they never saw anything, yet there’s cameras everywhere. The best part of the job was my immediate co workers. We had an unbreakable bond. We always helped each other and always had each other’s backs. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great family environment on my unit.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Patient care is complex. Multiple medical concerns and a lot always going on. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I loved it. Felt like a place that I belonged. I only left because I moved across the country. No HCA locally. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Team huddle, report from off going nurses at bedside,  look at today's tasks, pass medications, get patients ready for breakfast or tests. Lunch for patients. Discharges. Admissions. Dinner for patients and then report. Mostly leaving on time.

I enjoyed the teamwork aspect of the job. The manager in the GI Lab always jumped in to help when needed. A typical day was very busy and we worked very close with our doctors, anesthesiologists as well as the patients. The best part of the day was being able to work closely with the patients educating them regarding their healthcare.

Worked the evening shift after school, usually 3-10pm.

I learned more valuable information and tools to use in the workforce/after graduation.

I worked alone with a lead technologist on the shift with us, if I needed assistance.

There were several co-workers that were helpful but we were usually under staffed and worked independently.

The hardest part of the job was learning to work through exams on your own, not depending on others for assistance.

The most enjoyable part of the job was working independently and becoming a stronger technologist coming out of training.

i was allways ready to start work,keeping on schedule of what i had to do. I learned that it is important to do a good job to let your boss know that you are capable of doing your task well and finishing up your task in a timely manner. My co-workers were friendly,we worked together as a team which went very well,if one coworker did not understand the work we would explain it where they would understand the task. There was really no hard part of the job. The enjoyable part of the job was when we had parties for every holiday.

Due to the complexity of the patients and procedures performed at RMC, the experience gained from working at the facility is outstanding. It's not a place that just anyone can succeed. Being part of a team that is committed to excellence is why I chose to work and to continue to work at RMC. The work isn't the easiest out there but we are all here to care for each other and our patients. My department works hard to raise the bar of excellence each and every day.
