Richmond Behavioral Health Authority

During my time at RBHA, I worked at a solid program with a solid group of coworkers and a solid supervisory team.  Clients were great and generally receptive, and there were opportunities to learn and grow, at least in terms of job operations/clinical knowledge (advancement was non-existent).  Unfortunately, the program was an island in a polluted sea. I can recount all too many examples which demonstrate the toxicity of this agency, but will only share a few: 1) Upper management crippled the ability of workers to be effective by removing an important EHR function, leading to hundreds of unnecessary EHR steps per week, and thousands per month;  2) During covid, the PTO balance (sick and vacation) of some of my immediate coworkers went into the red ( negative time ) merely as a result of following covid protocols;  3) Myself, I was routinely harassed  by members of a sister program.  I followed established procedures - notify management about the problem, etc.  Nothing was done, and I eventually got blamed.   That’s the kind of backwards logic of this agency.  I could go on and on and on.  In summation, yes, there are opportunities, but beware, beware, the RBHA ocean is dangerous.

I am proud to be part of the innovative work environment RBHA has created. Management routinely look to direct staff for input / feedback and has recently implement a telework policy that allows more off-site work opportunities throughout the agency. It's not always easy work, helping others, especially in direct care, but when I need support I can count on my supervisor to help guide me and support me. When I have questions, I feel I can ask them and trust the answer I receive. RBHA has helped me grow professionally over the years, creating NUMEROUS opportunities for advancement for me as well as professional development on an ongoing basis. The agency provides excellent benefits to employees and strives to promote self-care and wellness, agency wide but also within the individual program areas. There are birthday and anniversary celebrations, fitness classes, morale groups, suggestion boxes, employee evaluation processes that reward performance, and many other excellent ways in which employees feel supported and valued.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part is the PTO, sick leave, vacation accrual and hybrid schedules. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The intensity of caseloads and lack of understanding regarding the demands that are placed on staff to include documentation, productivity and overall performance. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Leadership is just ok, it depends upon your role and who you report to. Those who you work more closely with are typically down to earth and overall kind. I feel as though there is a disconnect between upper leadership and staff who provide direct care service to actual clients. It is as if many of them forgot when they were in the field and actually provided face-to-face services to clients. Even still, the severity of clients now versus 20 years ago has significantly changed. Occasionally, it feels as if there is a lack of understanding. 


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Each day is different. Sometimes chaotic and others calm.

A typical day at work can vary in the crisis department. Everyday is different with challenges but yet can be rewarding as well. I see people when they are at their worse and experiencing a crisis. It is my responsibility to intervene when needed and figure out the best way to help the consumer. The interventions ranges from developing safety plans to involuntary hospitalizations for psychiatric care. I have learned a lot about mental health, substance abuse and that everyone is not immune from experiencing a crisis. I have evaluated consumers from all ranges of life. Working in crisis, a new learning experience presents itself daily. 

I work among seasoned crisis workers with a wealth of knowledge and they are willing to help assist in any way they can by answering questions or discussing cases and exploring various ways to approach a case.

Pretty slow-paced job that's good post grad. Very limited in what you can do because of billing and having to do everything through insurance. I was able to learn a good amount, but I did not feel motivated or excited about my job due to it being limited. Due to my age and the population I felt like I couldn't relate to my clients and colleagues. I really loved the flexibility of working 3 days in office, 2 from home. Even on the days I'm supposed to work in the office, I still have the option to work from home. I feel like my growth peaked which is so sad because my team is awesome. Obviously case management and working so closely with a client can lead to burn out and I really believe that happened about 4 months in. Overall, I think RBHA is a great company to work for and it's clear that they really do care about their staff and their safety. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Cooperative and professional staff that follows a routine that works for the benefit of everyone. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I was a van driver. There was no stress. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work environment was suitable and comfortable with rules and policies that worked for a safe environment and met the needs for everyone. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I reported to work at 6:00 AM to pickup clients from their residence and  arrived at the center @ 8:45. My next shift was in the afternoon to return clients home. I enjoyed working for the company and interacting with the clients.

60% of your day is consumed by paperwork. Client behaviors can be demanding and aggressive (if working with children). I have grown in being able to manage crisis' effectively and calmly. Management has decreased with it's involvement in the daily  program and appears to lack in supporting it's employees. The agency presents a culture that is heavy on documentation verses dedicating time to clients. The hardest part of the job is the never ending documentation and building relationships with clients and families. The most enjoyable is when progress is visible in your clients.

Working at RBHA was fine over all. Being a school based service case manager we worked regular school hours and had all of the holidays off such as, thanksgiving, Christmas break and spring break. We also had a month of during the summer, and also worked at a summer program. We also got paid pretty well.

This job also has it challenges. We had endless amount of paper work, and the kids could be difficult to work with. And the communication between senior management and the employees was also challenging at times.

Because you are working with children and adults where there are multiple issues to be addressed constantly, your scheduled activities can change rapidly.  You must be flexible, have a backup plan in the event of an emergency.  Management and your co-workers are very helpful and readily willing to assist you.  The hardest part of the job is
identifying the problem and making a plan of action with little preparation.  The willingness of the other employees to assist you is great.

My typical day at RBHA involves helping clients with breakfast and attending the morning meeting. Following the morning meeting I may be leading a therapeutic/psycho-educational group, meeting one-on-one with clients, escorting clients on outings within the community, working on treatment plans and service reports, or any number of daily activities which may arise. I enjoy the people I work with as well as the work atmosphere. The most enjoyable part of my job at RBHA is interacting with the clients.
