-Facilitated discharge planning on all units of the hospital including Medical/Surgical units, Surgical ICU, Medical ICU, Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Telemetry Unit, Pediatric unit, Maternity unit, and the Emergency Department.
-Consulted with hospital staff on patients and attended rounds with the medical personnel as part of the interdisciplinary team in the hospital.
-Interviewed and assessed patients to determine needs upon discharge; such as, Home Care, Short Term/Long Term Rehabs, Inpatient/Outpatient Rehabs, Homeless/Domestic Violence Shelters and facilitated their discharge to identified facility with transportation.
-Followed up with all patients not seen on site in Emergency Department via telephone or mail to assess need for referrals or supportive services.
-Provided resources and referrals in the community for the patients as needed.
-Utilized EDIMS, Meditech, and MedAssets to input all patients’ notes into their Medical Record.

A typical day at Richmond University Hospital was like the weather. Being a plumber for the campus for over 8 years things were never ''normal'' but that's why i loved working there. Every day was a new adventure for me because parts of the building were so old there would be a new leak and or problem to trouble shoot every day. Working a RUMC I have learned new aspects of plumbing like working with high pressure steam pumps and machinery. Co-workers were friendly. The hardest part of my job was arguing with management about making me work with asbestos, I guess they felt it was safe! I did not and that is one of the reasons I no longer work there. Safety is one of my goals.
The most enjoyable part of my day was when i made a repair on some broken pipe and got the place back up and running. It truly made me feel good.

RUMC is a mess. Understaffed, underpaid, no room for advancement. You will do the work of 5 different positions & get paid for one. Let alone it’s not even a livable wage they offer. There’s absolutely no incentive to want to continue to work there or even do your best. Computers are constantly not working, they don’t approve orders for any supplies whether it be medical or office supplies, so you’re constantly out of things you need to literally do your job. No one EVER gets raises, they don’t pay their bills nor do they pay for proper working equipment or supplies so who knows where all the money goes when it should be going to their hard working employees or even just providing their hard working employees with working equipment. Constantly putting “VIP” patients before people who will wait months for an appointment. Do not waste your time. Horrible horrible horrible company to work for. 

A typical day consists of seeing patients writing notes and making medication changes.
I learned more in-depth evaluation of inpatients, being more accurate in my diagnoses.  Management was generally supportive. The workplace culture was generally positive. Nurses and other staff members on the inpatient unit to be very helpful and friendly.  The hardest part of the job was dealing with the residents was the hardest part of the job. The most enjoyable part of the job was treating patients on my own, seeing patients improve, and getting positive feedback from their families. The nursing staff to be  friendly and helpful, more so than in any other hospital I have worked in.


Older employees set in their ways did not take kindly to new comers or their opinions . A employee with no supervisory title running the office and very poor personal skills made new employees very unwelcome and uncomfortable. Discarded like trash and not even notified of termination after a very serious medical event in employee's life even after several incidents of stepping up and filling open shifts when the department was understaffed and in trouble. Reprimanded for taking initiative to improve the condition of departments performance and appearance. 

Working in the ER at RUMC can be exciting but it is also very stressful at times. The staff make it a great place to work despite the challenges. I would recommend it for nurses who want more experience in their field. It takes dedicated and special people to work there and take care of critical patient's. It feels good when you are part of the healthcare team and knowing that you are doing good for someone who is not well. It makes you appreciate life more, especially when you are having a bad day or going through your own personal issues. As a unit clerk you are the invisible hands behind the doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and physician assistants.

working in an inpatient psychiatric unit made my skills stronger, I have learned interdisciplinary team approach, I was able to lead the team meetings, collaborative work with doctors, residents, mental health technicians and nurses helped me develop understanding the workplace culture. I have faced challenges at times with particular patients that were assigned to me due to complex Dual Diagnoses including substance abuser or serious psychiatric disturbances. but overall it has been a great learning experiences working  in inpatient units including adults and children/adolescence.

Meeting with patients to Oncology Clinic, Breast Cancer Clinic, Ambulatory Oncology Unit, as well as those who are on the Inpatient Oncology Unit.

I discuss barriers to they may have that will interfere with receiving care for their cancer.  Screen patients for psychosocial distress using the NCCN Distress Screening Tool.  Based on information provided in the assessment, provide various resources to patients.

I write progress notes for charts based on my patient load for the day.  I also schedule individual counseling sessions for patients to meet with me during non-Clinic days/hours.

Being in the mental health/substance abuse field my every day interactions with clients and families haven't always been easy. Sometimes being spat at, called obscene names, or having water thrown on you can leave negativity seeping into your skin. It takes patience understanding and compassion to deal with such situations. I strongly believe in quality over quantity in delivering a high quality of service. Richmond University has helped me learn and grow and has given me the skills to fulfill a job well done. The most enjoyable part of my job would be helping patients everyday.

Everyday in the emergency room is different especially in a level 1 trauma center, you start your morning off with down time and by 9am it is as if the everybody woke up. In the Emergency room you must move quickly and adjust from caring for the common cold to a critically care patient. As an emergency room nurse I have learned communication and critical care thinking skills while expanding my nursing knowledge in variety different levels of care. The hardest part of my job after all these years is caring for critical pediatric patients. I think the most enjoyable part of my job is the relationship that you develop with your co- workers and how we work as a team.
