A typical day in the Human Resource Department at River Oaks Hospital would be to start by preparing incoming new hires with all preliminary paperwork. This would be the necessary background checks, drug screening, etc. They would also fill out all their tax forms and was given the necessary benefit information for them to review prior to Orientation.
All the Orientation Packets were put together prior to that date.
It was crucial as well to manage all the personnel files with the necessary documentation that kept us prepared for Joint Commission Surveys.
All new hire paperwork was prepared for the Payroll Department as well as any termination paperwork. In addition, the Insurance Company had to be alerted to the fact when any employee left employment. Also assisted employees with any and all benefit issues which meant i acted as the liaison between the insurance company and the employee.
The hardest part of this position i believe was actually balancing and keeping up with all the task at hand due to low staffing.
The most enjoyable part of this position was the ability to work with employees with different issues and being able to help them get a resolution to them.

This place is ran like a shelter. Dirty. Housekeeping and Maintenance are a joke. Many of the staff members are extremely lazy, claim to be former addicts, or suffering from some psych disorder of their own. The longer they work there, the worse their practice and ethics are. There is a fast turnover because the "good" nurses leave quickly, so you are stuck with the old garbage. Unorganized place. Staff/Management treat their favorite employees differently. Administration is cold and non-existent after your orientation.  This is a good place to lose or constantly be threatened with any type of license that you may have. The favorites have no problem relating this to you daily. You are often left in dangerous staffing situations. Many nurses lose their license here. Never lost mine because I left due to inadequate staffing, poor administration, and rude coworkers. Be smart and stay away. Save your time, energy, and the heartache.

I really got a lot out of my time at ROH, and I think they serve an important and necessary role in the community. However,  there was a lot of gossip and pettiness among staff and decisions being made that were not in the best interests of the patients or the employees. They still use paper charting which makes for a lot of extra work and disorganization. On most of the units there was almost always some sort of situation going on which goes with the territory but they are ultimately not dealing with them as well as they could. Don't know what the roots of the problems are, but hopefully if and when they open their new facility they can start fresh.

I first started working for River Oaks hospital on a temporary basis for someone who was going on maternity leave.  This person decided she did not want to come back and the Director asked me if I would stay full time.  Of course, I said yes because I loved the job.  

I stayed there 5 years until the Mayor of Madison called me and asked me to lunch.  She discussed with me the possibility of going to work for her.  She offered me more money and it was an opportunity I could not pass up.  It was with a heavy heart that I had to tell River Oaks good by.  However, I loved the new job as well.  

I spent 3 1/2 years at River Oaks Hospital as an RN. I have much love and compassion for the mentally ill, a cruel disease no one chooses.  River Oaks Hospital has a high turnover of all staff. You think they would analyze that and correct the problems. Often I worked longer than my designated 12.5-hour shifts with no lunch break. The DON told me I was only allowed 1 meal break although many staff ignored that and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner. I left after having been beat up several times. River Oaks Hospital is a Fortune 500 company meaning they have a huge income yet refuse to have a guard which many hospitals have. I left because I believe everyone has the fundamental right to go to work and feel safe. Many staff had their eyeglasses broken and were injured on the job. That is wrong! Also, most staff seldom received compliments which would help staff morale.

I worked here for three years. The pay is $10/hr for a position requiring a 4yr degree. There is no promotion potential and no opportunity for a pay raise. While there may be good relationships between nurses and admin and between admin and admin; techs get treated very poorly by admin and by some nurses.

The units are understaffed and only about 50% of the nurses actually care about their job. While the adolescent unit's manager was fantastic, admin treated her poorly. I would not reccommend being a tech here. HR only comes around to the unit twice per year, when the corporate execs come to town and to bribe you with candy for the annual survey.

There are other psych hospitals in the area that start at $15/hr and many good techs have left to work at those.

The structure and foundation at River Oaks is unstable. The tech management is extremely poor. It’s the most important position in the hospital - the front line and it is the most unstable spot in the hospital. The techs are on the front line, it’s vital to the culture of the hospital that they are managed effectively. The upper Administration is all over the place. They do not communicate. The things that they allow are unethical and has created. Tensious environment. They allow nepotism and favoritism for advancement. It’s clear as day. 

A typical day was different every day. I was stationed in the Dual Diagnoses unit but often moved around between Dual Diagnoses, Eating Disorders, Child and Adolescent, Adult Psychiatric, and Trauma units. I leaned the structure and functioning of the different units. I learned what treatment plans look like for each unit. I learned techniques and tactics to use for the treatment of the various individuals. Management was wonderful. A RN Nurse was the manager of each unit. My co-workers were wonderful. Good working team.The hardest part of the job was not having a stable work schedule. The most enjoyable part of the job was working in the many different units and getting experience in all units.

While working for this so-call hospital, I noticed how the majority of the RN nursing stall chose who, what, when and where they wanted to work. The majority of the RN's didn't have much respect for the patients. For the most part, the nurses stayed in the office after giving report or medicines. The psych counselors where often left on their own, after being trained for a few days of orientation. Management pretty much didn't exist, because like I said the awful nurses were the ones running the show. This facility is more like a paid shelter, that really don't care about the patients needs. Ask yourself why is there a high turnover rate?

Great employees! Rewarding patient care focused environment. Team work and communication is a priority. The hospital is an education centered environment for growth in the psychiatric healthcare field. Facility plans for growth in size and services
