Riverside Community Hospital

I enjoyed working with my coworkers at Brookdale Hospice.  They were hard-working, compassionate, and truly cared for the patients we serviced.  
     My typical day at work started with my transmitting the daily on call schedule.  I then would retrieve all messages from overnight and follow up on any new referrals, any field staff needs, run any new financial eligibility checks that were needed prior to the daily Stand Up meeting in which we would entail the daily events we were about to embark upon.  From there I would assist the marketing team with their referrals, field any referrals that came in over the phones, answer any questions about hospice that also came in on the phones from patients, family members, or other interested parties.
  Aside from these functions I participated in weekly Marketing Meetings, aided with the weekly IDG (Interdisciplinary Group) Meeting, and helped develop any databases that were needed.
     Management was very supportive in the beginning but after a short time, if guidelines weren't being adhered to, there were many meetings and stressful emails which I could understand but the subject of these "infractions" were items such as: CC items instead of BC items on emails and accidentally not capitalizing a word in an email sent.  I had a large folder of "Brookdale Procedural Walkthroughs" which stressed me out more than actually doing the job itself.
     What I learned:  I am able to smile through more than I thought possible.  People are not always what they claim nor appear to be but that is alright, because I am what and who I claim and appear to be.
     The hardest part of this job:  Intake, in and of itself is a very difficult and hectic position but if you can keep your head about you while all others are losing theirs and take a breath, think about the patients' needs first, and make sure they are in a safe place everything will work out for the best.
    The most enjoyable part of this job:  Knowing that the patient is comfortable and the family is relieved.

I arrive at the hospital at 6am to change into my scrubs and to see what were my cases for the day. Next I would do my daily scrub and then go into the core to check the case cart for my first case. Once I check the case cart, I pull the items and instruments I knew were needed for the case. Once I have everything that I need I start setting up for my cases. I open the backtable, ringstand and instruments. I open the items (ex. sutures, blades, hypo, ect.) in the ringstand and I open my gown and gloves on the mayo stand. When everything is open I scrub in and place all my counted items out so I can count with my circulator. Once the items are counted I set up my backtable and mayo stand to my liking. I drape any devices that will be used for the case. After the patient is under and the surgeon is not present I would drape the patient. Next I would drape the surgeon and/or the assistant. I would bring up my mayo stand with the the bovie, suction,  ect. to attach to the drapes. I bring my backtable up too. I helped assist the surgeon by retracting, suctioning, and handing instruments. When the surgeon closes I count with my circulator and ask for my dressing. When the surgery was over I removed the drapes, help clean the patient and move the patient. When the patient is out I help turnover the room and prepare for my next case.
I got along well with my co-workers and I learned a lot from them too. They taught me the sooner you count with the circulator the more time you have to set up and you don't have to worry about having to count later.They also taught me to be fearless when participating in the cases. The hardest part of the job is remembering the new instruments that I was not expose to in school. For example it was difficult for me to remember some of the instruments used for nureo cases but with the help of the surgical tech that I was with, I was able to remember them. I enjoyed working at Riverside Community Hospital because I was fortunate to experience multiple types of surgeries and I was grateful to scrub into the cases as well

Work in an emergency room is very stressful but also rewarding. We saw approximately 200-300 patients in a 24 hour period and sometimes more.  Answered 200 or more incoming calls, made all the outgoing calls as requested by doctor’s and staff.  I had a lot of contact with patients especially when the RN’s were busy with other patients.  I learned patience, compassion and the ability to work with many types of employees as well as patients.   You felt like part of a big family and if there was ever an emergency or need by one of the employees everyone jumped in to help.  I learned how to talk with disgruntled patients and for the most part I could resolve most problems without the help of the charge nurse or management.  The hardest part was dealing with the death and illness. You have to always listen and not be judge mental and be as helpful as your job allowed.  We needed to be understanding even when the other person was wrong. We had to remember the stressful situation patients or family might be enduring. This at times was a very difficult part of my employment. The most enjoyable part was interacting with the patients and also the staff. At times we had many traveling RN’s and it was a lot of fun getting to know them and there background as at any time we could have many different travelers from all walks of life. I retired from Riverside Community approx 4 yrs ago. Like I stated I loved my job but now would like to experience something different while still dealing with the public. I’m a very hard worker and know that I could do well at this.

Terrible life experience working for Riverside Community Hospital, specifically in the EVS department. Extreme favoritism runs the place, managers will speak and treat you like an illiterate child. They will make your life a nightmare if you do not Kiss up  or if you question any of their stupid ideas. Forget about trusting your coworkers , they too will spread lies about your work ethic and FRAME YOU, in order to make you quit or for management to fire you. Managers Jose and Patricia are a waste of human space, nothing but a bunch of hypocritical narcissists. Their main interest is them and them only and how cool and important they think they are.  The hospital might pay you a few extra dollars per hour to work there plus benefits but its not worth your efforts. They will gaslight you and harass you if they feel you are smarter than them. They do not like to be questioned,They do not care about your safety . They pick and choose who they will target and throw heavier workloads over other associates. They allow specific people to hardly work while others pick up their slack. Many of the workers also smoke marijuana on the job during breaks and walk back into the building like its nothing. Management needs to be re evaluated and replaced by good leaders who actually treat their workers with respect. Its a circus in there. Count your blessings and spare yourself.

CONS: 
- No work life balance, worked almost all weekends and very late evenings. Very uncommon schedule for non-managerial accounting positions. No time for anything but work.
- PTO includes holidays and sick time - this means you won't get paid for holidays until you have been there a few months and you probably won't want to take sick time because that will cut into your vacation time
- Deceptive Job Posting. Beware of short job posting details, doesn't describe half the actual work or the workload. Won't find out until you're already working. Mine didn't mention payroll once, and I ended up being responsible for the review and accuracy of +1,900 employees' payroll.
- Very cutthroat & High Turnover. Many senior management or tenured employees termed or demoted often, little notice. I printed termination checks everyday.
- Budget cuts as bad as elsewhere. Bring your own coffee, water, cups, etc..or stop by cafeteria

- Employees who have been there for many years have a great heart and are very descent people. They are usually kind,friendly and helpful. It's those new management people you have to be careful with.

What is the best part of working at the company?
some staffs were great to work with.. some weren’t .. RN’s were  sitting around  lazy and delegated all foley caths to LVN’s acting like they were busy. The charger nurse was always busy looking for an LPN to do all all incoming foley caths order and for us to do stuff like delv labs and etc while 4-5 RN’s were sitting at the station chit chatting away..all they do is pass meds while the LVN’s did everything from med pass to draw blood, put in IV lines.. i couldn’t wait to get outta there actually.. glad my contract was 11 weeks only vs the whole 13 weeks as a travel LPN. Seen a 2 year old go into febrile seizure as he sat in the lobby for over 2 hours waiting for ibruprofen..(prob cause the RN’s were waiting for the LPN to take over that simple med order while the LPN’s were already  taking care of all incoming IV placements! IV placements was always a heavy incoming load.. 99% of patients need it! any sort of abdominal pain, chest pain etc and all med orders that were sitting there for hours!! from previous shift! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
walking into ur shift to see meds sit there for hours from previous shift!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
heavy on the: glad my contract was up at 11 weeks only hahaha

I was very excited to come here after interviewing. However, what was conveyed in my interview versus actual expectations once the job started were different. This largely relates to hours, schedule, and workplac responsibilities. Also, management is always about the money - across departments (e.g. pharmacy, transport, therapy, RN, etc). For example, they flex people frequently (meaning call people off or send them home if there isn’t enough work). They don’t pay you if you get flexed off. They do provide PPE for all employees - though sometimes is hard to get and you need to convince the person handing it out that you, indeed, need it. The management does not care about work/life balance. This, again, likely stems from a financial standpoint. You are not allowed to clock in or out early. You must clock in at the exact minute of your shift time. You cannot have even 1 minute of overtime. They will ask you to fix it. As you can see, this again turns back to money. This heavy focus on finances infiltrates all aspects of company culture. Many departments have high turn over because of it. However, pay here is relatively good, as it’s a for-profit hospital.

My experience with Riverside Community Hospital has offered both challenges and opportunities for growth. Working in a fast-paced environment has helped me sharpen my clinical judgment, improve adaptability, and expand my experience with diverse patient populations. The facility has a solid foundation with protocols and procedures designed to promote patient safety and care standards. I’ve had the chance to collaborate with a variety of healthcare professionals, which has further strengthened my communication and teamwork skills.

While there are areas that could benefit from stronger support and more consistent staffing, I’ve learned to advocate for my patients and manage high-stress situations effectively. This position has taught me valuable lessons in resilience, time management, and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries. Overall, I’m grateful for the experience and the skills I’ve developed here, and I look forward to applying them as I continue to grow in my nursing career.

The overlap with the day crew was relaxed. Then the action started. It often felt like a football game trying to outperform the demands of acute and critical hospital care. 

I learned a whole universe of equipment and triage of the needs of the various hospital departments. I learned a lot of medicine. 

The most difficult part was handling all the stress. I was difficult to unwind after a workday. 

Management put us between being understaffed and comprising patient care. The were deaf to our requests for an adjusted floor plan or additional staffing. 

My coworkers were two faced gossipers. Some were excellent workers. Some were slackers who refused to be motivated. 

The stress and uncooperative management were difficult. 

I really love medicine. I loved being part of a team the delivered excellent care to patients in need.

the job was very satisfying, always something to do. i always kept busy, it was very fast paced but i enjoyed that. there was always something new everyday, weather it was the people i was working with or management was changing something giving us new tasks to work on and always seeing new faces, interacting with different nurses and doctors. everyday i learned a new way to keep up cleanliness or better satisfy the customers always getting better answers for their questions. the hardest part about the job was working after certain employees and picking up their slack of work they didn't do, their were quite a few lazy employees although i never complained to management, i always did my job properly and thorough. everyone, even the lazy people, were always friendly and very enjoyable to work with.
