8 year employee. I used to love working for Riverside Health System... until recently when they requested I take a PAY CUT ...Twice...for another similar position I wanted to apply and transfer to. I couldn't figure out why they were telling me I would have to take a paycut for another CNA position when I clearly earned my pay for performance raises each year. I started off with a really low wage and new CNAs are starting with what took me 4 years to make. I finally had enough when I was told that 2 new out of school CNAs (that I trained) were offered 2 brand new positions that assist patients and customers that lack health insurance find the connections they need at local health clinics, labs. Etc. 
I had never been so insulted in my life after I found out I, an 8 year employee, was overlooked yet I already had some training and other knowledge regarding such. Not only would I have been a great fit for that job, my personal hearing loss would be better accommodated by Riverside with a more one on one customer service experience position. I already work 3 times harder because of hearing loss and it's tough. 
Once I actually voiced to someone why I was upset about not being offered or even told the New position was open, their response was "You might as well consider yourself as a disabled black women, because those pretty little girls are going to be awarded everything with ease and advance, and everything you do will most likely always go unnoticed." 

No health benefits if you work less than an average of 30 hours a week. To lessen the cost of health insurance premiums they stopped providing insurance for part time staff and weeded out half that do not have the option or cannot pick up an extra 6 /8  hours to make that 30 hour average. 

Other than that, you will have a chance to meet some amazing doctors, and nurses that will leave an imprint for life.

I moved from up north where I worked for 3 teaching hospitals for Harvard University. I quickly realized that hospitals in Virginia are VERY DIFFERENT. I believe Riverside is a decent place to work for but 1. It was hard for me to accept that after taking a $15,000 pay cut that I was still making less than I did 12yrs ago??? Not mention my medical premiums doubled..(Am I still in the same country???) 2. Insurance Verification is in the Call Center which includes Pt Accts and Central Scheduling. I worked here 20 months and I was the 25th person to leave or be fired from this dept, starting from my 1st day. The quickest lasted 1 week and she decided she didn't like it, she had seen enough, a few just went to lunch after crying and never came back. This dept will over work you, stress you out, make you work overtime but not pay you, if you have an accident on the way to work you will get an occurence/be penalized for it, but a mngrs dog dies and she get 3 days off w/o an occurrence. The hopes of transferring will only happen if the director ABSOLUTELY LIKES YOU. I only saw this happen 2x, though more than 10 have tried. Mgmnt will micro manage you to no end, smile in your face and write you up for nonsense, then smile again, all in 1 day. I've had many stressful jobs in past but this was the worst job/dept I've EVER WORKED FOR!!! If you want a new job that will crush your joy of working ... then Riverside's call center is the place for you. If you read this an decide not to apply, just have sigh of relief, that a stranger just gave you a blessing. The 1 positive I will say about this dept., thought it is a Call Center with about 40 women, there was little to no caddiness and my former coworkers were some of the best women I've met! Ladies keep praying, you will get out of Alcatraz..

For those of you that dare venture into this dept.... Go with God! And remember, I told you so....... SORRY!!!!!

The director is a non-clinical and does not back up her employees. She is never in the office and if she is there it’s like she is not there. She has her customer service reps run the company. There are too many chiefs and not enough Indians. You are the only one with a Licenses and customer service is given wrong info to customers concerning respiratory, you present this to the director and she defends customer service. Delivery drivers set patients up on oxygen and do not follow policy of NC length to liter flow. They leave Oxygen tanks standing without any holders (VERY DANGERIOUS). The director will yell out her door if she is mad at you that she will firer you so all employees hear her. The customer service reps and reimbursement specialist do their work out (exercise) every 30 minutes whether boss is there or not. Not organized at all, one day you can do something but it’s different the next day. No consistency at ALL. If you do not care about your license as a Respiratory Therapist this is the job for you. When I started there I had no computer, no phone line and no Director to direct me what to do and where to go. And other employees had no clue what to have me do. I had to pretty much teach myself.  There is no team work or any consequences for your actions. Staff brings their kids to work and so does the director if they do not have child care. The customer service reps are so loud you cannot even hear the patients when you are on the phone with them, because they are messing around. This has all been brought to the director’s attention and her response was “don’t worry about what they do”. I like to enjoy my work environment and have fun but there is a time and place for it. Never have I ever worked for a company that has been so unorganized and wasted so much un-needed over time and money. Employees dating each other and were married at the time. It’s just a mess.

The hospital in general is ok, they seem to care deeply about making sure that the patients are well taken care of and that they are always listened to. The main issue there is with the Admitting Dept (Patient Access). That department is constantly hiring and is a revolving door because they can't keep employees there due to the horrible management and treatment there, just this past few years. They are super inexperienced, impersonal, unfair, show favoritism and have consistently scored low on the Riverside yearly employee satisfaction survey because of this. The scheduler for the department is unreliable and unreasonable and arrogant and if you're not able to bend over backwards, they look down on you for it. If you are single with no kids and are not in school, this position may work out better for you. The employees in that department always talk about how it is a transition department because no one ever stays there too long. It's impossible to reach any real level of growth there. If you're looking for a position that pays better than minimum wage until you can get to a better position, it may work for you. I would just steer clear of the 3 management officials in that department as they are very corrupt. You would be better off applying for other departments in the hospital.

A "typical" day at Riverside can mean any number of things. It could mean you get to clock in, do your shift and leave or it could mean you get to deal with non-clinicians making clinical decisions, it could mean you get to sit through a 2 hour "meeting" where management berates you and your peers for things you cannot control. In my personal experience the hardest part of the job is not providing care or working with your peers, it is people in leadership positions who simply have no business leading others. If you work at Riverside (at least the facility I worked at) you will be overworked, underpaid (in some instances you simply won't be paid at all) and you may join the large number of people they've terminated for no reason at all despite being extremely understaffed. At the time of my "termination" the floor was being staffed almost entirely by agency personnel.

Typical work days were straight forward and you were aware of what was expected of you.  I learned a decent amount for the short time I worked at Riverside. The fellow staff were great and open to teaching tasks I had not seen before. The overall work environment was good. 
Management left a lot to be desired. HR and management are great at working together to bait and switch employees coming in. Get everything in writing and understand very clearly what is expected of you shift-wise. It was made to believe that day shift was what was offered on my hiring. After training and coming off orientation, all they had was night shift. Despite multiple conversations about my shift availability with multiple management members since my hiring and because “nowhere does it say Riverside hires for a specific shift time”, I left the job after wasting weeks of training. The information of shift availability would have been best gone over prior to hiring and weeks of training. Learn from my mistakes friends, get it in writing and beware the bait-and-switch. 


The Management and Human Resources Departments always held their employees in their best interests.  A typical day at work would be greeting co-workers, then getting down to the nitty-gritty of the day.  Great emphasis was placed on teamwork and management was always easy to approach.  One of the hardest part of my job was understanding foreign accent dictators which took a lot of patience and a lot of correspondence but would get easier with time.  The most enjoyable part of the job was working with excellent co-workers who were willing to help at any time.  Every employee that I had contact with, either at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Internal Medicine of Gloucester and Riverside Regional Medical Center were all a pleasure to work with.

They are constantly checking competitors and making sure that they are paying above everyone else if possible.

Riverside loves to promote from within. You just need to let your manager know your goals and they will do their best to help you achieve them.

Management works closely with their staff and treats them like family. They will never ask you to do anything they are not willing to do themselves.

Riverside feels like a family. It is a great place to work.

● Overall
Riverside is an amazing place to work. They truly care about all their employees and want them to succeed. They are always looking at ways to make work/life balance better, and ways to reduce stress for employees.

I think the only reason im lasting is because I love helping others, other than that this company does not pay enough for what you have to encounter . gas exspenses becomes more then your pay check (home health) . Also , this job is very stressful . Dealing with the agency and the family of the client.This becomes more stressful then having co-workers.On your days off they will call you non stop and "no " is hard for them to take . They also can be fairley disorganized !!
Please understand that this job is not for the weak it can drive you mad!!
On the Other hand mamagement" I wont say her name "but she is wonderful !!! Caring , sincere , Understanding and a hard worker .She's always there when needed . I respect her so much !! Kudos to you !!

I worked here for 13 years. The work atmosphere was generally pleasant among coworkers but, there really was no real teamwork, which made it harder to properly care for patients/residents. Healthcare is about teamwork. 
We often were under-staffed, and expected to work with excellence, under these conditions. (Didn't happen). Too many call-outs which left floors short.
Benefits are good but, health care is relatively high. Really loved the complimentary discounted fitness and wellness membership.
Pay is low compared to other facilities in the area. Overtime is being cut out frequently, even though facility is understaffed,but, you do get paid shift differential for working evenings and nights .
