A typical day involves engaging with clients struggling with mental health and addiction, providing support and care to those in need. While client interaction is rewarding, the environment often feels chaotic and overwhelming due to poor management practices and unrealistic expectations.

Working as a second-shift BHT taught me resilience and the importance of advocating for clients. However, the toxic workplace dynamics such as being overworked, unrecognized, and falsely promised advancement have overshadowed the learning experience.

lead tech, aggressively micromanages every aspect of the shift, lack of competency, forced compassion, and inconsistency in expectations creates a hostile and unpredictable work environment. Responsibilities shift daily without clear guidance or recognition.

Workplace culture varies depending on your shift. The second shift feels particularly strained due to poor leadership and lack of support, making collaboration difficult and morale low.

Most challenging aspect is the inability to voice concerns or frustrations without fear of disciplinary action such as being written up. This creates a culture of silence and further exacerbates the toxic atmosphere.

The most fulfilling part of the job is connecting with clients and being their go-to person during challenging times. However, even this is hindered by management’s focus on menial tasks like cleaning, which are often prioritized over meaningful client engagement.

While the role offers valuable opportunities to support and empower clients, the toxic environment, poor leadership, and lack of recognition make it difficult to fully thrive in this position.

I truly could’ve told anyone that working at RAC was the best job I’ve ever had, and I still feel partly that way. Being part of the clinical team came with its benefits (great team of therapists most of the time), but the instability of the team was a huge downfall. Within 3 years, we had 3 new clinical directors and a period of 4 months without a director. The constant stress of not knowing if leadership is happy with you was a lot of pressure, and the work load can be very hard to balance with your personal life. Working in this type of setting is always fast-paced and chaotic at times, but documentation standards with clinical can be overwhelming. I can’t say that I’m without fault, and I definitely made many mistakes in this role, while being given grace to fix it and grow from the experience, which I have. 

I felt extremely secure in my role for a long time and felt very valued by leadership, until they no longer needed me and I quickly saw how dispensable I was. Fired without explanation, and they will not pay out PTO or offer any source of severance (despite giving that to other clinical employees in the past). 

The facility is great for clients, and I’d still recommend it to those struggling with addiction. Just be sure that you’re prepared for constant stress and fear that your job is in jeopardy at any time. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Definitely the clients. Overall RAC is a good place to work. Unfortunately the company has become what most private companies become. Swaying away from people and focusing on profits.  Trying to get off for the holidays can be a challenge. Your PTO is accrued as you work and it counts as your sick time also. The pay is good and the free healthcare is awesome. I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to work in this field to apply.  Might be what you’re looking for and then again it might not.  



What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
For me it was the high turnover rate and trying to fill the positions. Majority of my days were focused on recruiting and onboarding.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall it’s not bad. If you are a clinician who has never worked in a private company for substance abuse then you will probably be morally conflicted.  Meeting a person where they are in life and presenting options for aftercare are pre written for you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Enjoyable and fun. A lot of small perks during the year.  Free company clothing for employees. Family fun days and Christmas bonuses for all employees.

I absolutely love working here. It is honestly the best job I have ever had. My coworkers are the best. We work as a team every single day to make sure that our clients have the best experience possible to grow in their recovery. Every single person that I work with genuinely care about our clients and their future. And each other. My team leads and management are amazing and go above and beyond for us and our clients. They make sure we are trained and comfortable in our jobs. So we can be more effective on a daily basis. I feel seen there and valued as a person and an employee. I love having a job that I enjoy going to. Even on our busiest days the work load is not more than we can handle because we work together to do what needs to be done. I can not say anything other than amazing things about working here. I can be my authentic self without judgements. 

A typical day for me is lots of laughter with clients and staff. It’s something we all need and enjoy at RAC. I’ve learned so much during my employment of almost 4 years but mainly listen to the clients and try to help them get through with whatever they are going through. Management is amazing, they’ve allowed me to work at my own pace which always work brings so much joy amongst us. The hardest part is when I see clients come back but we always love on them right back to life again. The most enjoyable part is when they come back and wants to start working with 6 months of sobriety. 

I absolutely love working at Robert Alexander Center for Recovery. I’m surrounded by people like myself who are in recovery and who I relate to. I have the daily opportunity to help others better themselves. All of my coworkers are positive influences on me by helping support my growth and working their hardest each day. This job has challenged me to stay on track with multiple things at once and make sure they are done correctly. It has made me a better employee and person over all. All of the management staff are compassionate and understanding of the workers and they truly care about the well being of the clients. I would recommend working at Robert Alexander Center to anyone.

Upper management is extremely toxic and unprofessional

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic. The majority of people that started working there when they first opened are no longer there and that says a lot.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Physically, not a hard job at all. Not a lot of on your feet work.

BHTs are expected to adhere to all client demands and wishes at all times. This includes letting the clients stay up all night, brew coffee at 2am, and just generally do whatever they want to do. We have to "Meet them where they are at"

BHTs do the brunt of the labor, are paid the least amount, and have very little say in how the operations are run. I never met the owners of the facility.

I was fired without warning and without any reasoning. I worked for the company as a BHT for over a year.

Each day as a Behavioral Health Tech my day is spent making sure that the needs are met to individuals whom are struggling with alcohol, addictions and mental health... I do my best to shine light into the darkness and just love them back to life until they can love themselves again... We try to empower each individual and give them the tools to a successful way of living...

Wow. If you love never knowing where you stand with co workers and management. This is the place for you. You’ll be asked to be a weekend lead but when you have to make decisions you’ll be told you were wrong to do it. When you don’t make decisions you’ll belittled. When you’re bullied at work… they’ll tell you you are being dramatic. They’ll make you drive hours to pick up clients that don’t answer the doors. They’ll don’t care if it’s almost the end of your shift or if you’re tired.
