During my tenure at Rockbridge Area Health Center Dental Office, I encountered a workplace environment marred by unprofessionalism and bullying, making it one of the most challenging experiences of my career. The atmosphere in the office was tense, with certain individuals asserting dominance through intimidation tactics and belittling behavior. Despite our shared goal of providing quality dental care, the workplace culture was toxic, fostering an environment of fear and insecurity. One incident that stands out occurred during a team meeting, where I was subjected to public humiliation by a colleague who consistently undermined my contributions. Additionally, there were instances of gossiping, exclusion, and passive-aggressive communication, further exacerbating the hostile atmosphere. These experiences took a toll on my self-confidence and morale, leaving me feeling isolated and demoralized. Despite my efforts to maintain professionalism and focus on my work, the constant barrage of negativity affected both my mental well-being and job satisfaction. While I attempted to address the issue through internal channels, the lack of support from management and fear of retaliation hindered any meaningful resolution. Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to leave the dentist office in search of a healthier work environment. This experience taught me the importance of setting boundaries, advocating for oneself, and recognizing when a workplace is no longer conducive to personal growth and fulfillment. It also underscored the significance of cultivating a supportive and respectful workplace culture where all employees feel valued and heard. Though my time at the RAHCD was fraught with challenges, it served as a valuable lesson in resilience and self-advocacy. By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness about the prevalence of workplace bullying and inspire others to prioritize their well-being in professional settings.

There is no pleasing management, hard work is never good enough. Very high turnover rate and no thanks or incentive for those who stay longer. Eventually everyone leaves, either by choice or being pushed out by management. They expect certain employees to carry the burden, while the others do not pull their weight or held to accountability. If you become a target in any way, leave because there is no redeeming yourself with management. If they view you as a threat to the 'dictatorship' you will have a problem. Only certain staff (except providers/management) are given the opportunity to pursue further training and education. Advancement is not likely and usually given to those with no or less experience, forcing other staff to train the new staff or those in advancement without compensation/credit for the training. Certain staff are allowed to bully other staff and take credit for other's work. Compensation seems to be a version of Russian Roulet, not based on the actual job, work contribution, or knowledge/experience.  If you like a hostile environment and lack of job security, then this is the place for you.

Working here 100% provides a service for an underrepresented group, providing health care, dental procedures and counseling to people that might not qualify for care anywhere else.   

However 

Management put out fires all day.  Any real management plans don't happen because of the major problem of the day.   Management is late and leaves early.  All managers work in the main building,  the other offices have no one in charge working there.  Problems that are not reported to management become overwhelming and take over the work day.  

People that want to leave feel trapped in their job because all positions require a minimum of 30 days to leave.  some people only stay because they have a 45 or more day leave requirement and they are trapped. 

The center is an asset to the community it serves but mangers make workers feel replaceable,  every day, workers worry they will be fired.



When you work here, you quickly realize that we are a true asset to our community. We offer low cost medical, dental and behavior health care to people in our area who are uninsured or under insured by offering a slide scale based on family income and size. 

I've been with the organization for 6 years and in that time we have had a major growth spurt. We went from 4 full time employees to now a staff of 73. 

Management encourages a friendly team based workforce. There may be some interpersonal disagreements (and I have learned in my work experience that this happens everywhere), but by and large everyone wants to be part of a successful organization. 

Open positions are sent to the staff, so there is always a chance to advance or try a different job skill. 

We just had a Grand Opening for our beautiful new facility. We have doubled in space and patients and community members are raving about the building.

I served as an employee at the Rockbridge Area Health Center for over five years and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to make a meaningful impact in their community. The role I held was profoundly rewarding and impacted me both professionally and personally. I can see myself returning to this organization someday in the future, given the exceptional team camaraderie that is rare to find elsewhere. Most staff members are eager to assist and support one another. RAHC also offers exposure to various medical specialties, providing invaluable knowledge and experience. In terms of management, I consistently felt valued and supported, with open lines of communication for any questions, concerns, or issues.

I have worked at the Health Center for over seven years and love being employed here.  The staff are friendly and welcoming and genuinely care about the patients and each other.  There are opportunities for advancement as RAHC promotes from within, and ideas are listened to and taken into consideration when presented to Management.  This is an excellent place to work for those who enjoy caring for others and thrive being part of a team that embraces challenges.  

A typical day at work normally consists of friendly interactions with coworkers, patients and other staff members. The management is the most supporting group of individuals and they feel very strongly for their team. The most difficult thing I have had to deal with, is the need, want and desire to get dental care , but there is only so many spots. I wish we could help so many more people than we are, but I’m the bigger picture, we help numerous individuals. 

Was a good job for being full time enjoyed having consistant hours. However, not the place to work unless you can act fake and two faced or if you need time to learn new things. I was expected to be perfect and make no mistakes made little mistakes amd those "ruined the health centers reputation". 

This place is the worst place I have ever worked  it doesn't matter how much you give, it's never good enough.  Everyone is replaceable per management.  Management needs to be cleaned out from the top.  .  Beware of this employer

Coming from a larger healthcare organization I had some reservations about working with a smaller team such as the one at RAHC. I was pleasantly surprised at the focus the leadership team has put on employee development in both in clinical and non-clinical areas. Their commitment to constant improvement and to providing a work/life balance to their staff is far superior to anything I have been involved with. It is a refreshing, exciting and fun place to work, and I am proud of the work that is done here.
