What is the best part of working at the company?
I would characterize this job site as the assembly lines of mental health care with management who don't behave consistently or appropriately and are quick to change their minds about an employee based on strategically placed "brown-noser" employees who endear themselves to management for obvious reasons and then take opportunities to play manager themselves because often the real managers are so laissez faire as to be nonexistent or often absent. Patients are often repeat customers because the real work isn't being done. The business model itself is too commercial and focused on making money. With a 501(c)3 you want the focus to be on the people you serve, but, this doesn't seem to be the case here, as they expand their factories nation-wide. I have often heard comments like, "well their parents are rich so if we ask for another week, they should be able to pay out of pocket." I would not recommend any true therapist or empathetic human to work here. The two or three really decent people work here for the solid paycheck for their own reasons, but, by and large this seems to be a stepping stone for people, and the dangling carrot to work here in the first place is the big paychecks for administration--and fairly decent pay for the therapists. If you have a mind to make money while losing your initial purpose for becoming a therapist, this is the place for you!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management say you're doing well, and the next day they put you on what amounts to a PIP. Management listening to co-workers and using these people to do their own job. Management largely unavailable or out of pocked. Co-workers thinking they are the boss because some will always try to fill the void of an absentee leader.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
People seem nice, but everyone talks behind everyone else's back. You think you're working with decent adults who have done the work to be self-actualized, but you are working with people who need mental health for themselves but instead sublimate their unwillingness or inability to do that by "pretending" to help others. Very few real gems here, but they are getting burned out by having to do the heavy lifting for everyone else.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Therapists and BS coming in not feeling like doing the things they were assigned to and passing the buck onto someone else who is more amenable to helping and doing the work required. Tight office space with everyone talking about their own issues and attempting to make jokes to have the best "zingers" to get on the zinger-count board. A few hard workers putting in their time to lead group or education or lunch, a few really good therapists helping patients, and the rest love the paycheck and the ability to "work from home" and leave the work to the very few who actually care about the patients. Run, don't walk. There are better places out there for those who really care about the mental health vocation.

I would only recommend Rogers to brand new Dietitians who want to get a year or two of experience and leave for a better org.  There’s very little longevity Built into being a (Dietitian) in the Rogers organization, and you quickly come to realize that the work demands expected of you don’t match up with the pay.  Our manager was great until she left, But aside from her position there are no opportunities for upward mobility either.

The work we do there is really rewarding, and working with patients can be an enjoyable albeit challenging experience.  Generally your coworkers are pretty solid too, but you can tell that everybody is under a similar unrealistic workload. Tasks and demands are constantly added, but Responsibilities are never taken away. 

The work culture is toxic, and full of platitudes like “self-care“ that don’t match up with the reality of the working environment.  If you are a go-getter, there’s a chance you may succeed if you schmooze higher ups, but more likely than not you will work yourself to death with little reward. The compensation structure Encourages you to be a mediocre employee. There is no incentive to work harder, you will not get more than a quarter percent higher raise than one of the worst coworkers. And the annual cost of living increase doesn’t even match inflation, especially after this last year.

Benefits are decent, but it’s very difficult to ever actually take any PTO because they can’t retain any pool dietitians due to the terrible pay. And even when someone does cover for you, they end up creating a lot of work for you by the time you get back anyway because the pool dietitians are expected to learn almost 20 different units And therefore never get very competent at covering any of them.

Additionally, management does not care about any of your complaints. There are many toxic psychiatrists with God complexes who treat the dietitians like the disposable servant they essentially are, as described above. I would argue the slight majority of the doctors you work under are decent, a few are excellent, but the really bad ones are just that: really bad.  

For an organization that prides itself on being a leader in mental health treatment, they structure themselves out around unsustainable working conditions and burn out. They are obsessed with expansion, constantly use the idea of patient care as a shield to justify exploitive practices of employees, and as a result I know very few people who last more than a year in an any position there—not just dietitians.  

If you value your own mental health, I do not recommend working for Rogers Behavioral Health. 

A job working in mental health should not require you to sacrifice your own. My depression and anxiety were never worse than when I worked at Rogers. Management doesn’t care about anything accept getting patients in the door. Dangerous, criminal and even murderers would be accepted for inpatient and other levels of care at Rogers with no regards for the safety of the staff. Violent and hostile patients who threatened staff were coming through the admissions department daily and we were just expected to take it and sacrifice our safety because they were mentally ill. It was extremely stressful and taxing. Management does nothing to support their staff and sits in their office handing out to do lists while their staff takes care of all patient interactions. There were days and even weeks I wouldn’t have any actual interaction with my lead other than her sending out emails of things to the department that needed to be done and followed up on. That we were all aware needed to be worked on but the staff was stretched so thin it was hard to get everything done that was required of us. Leads and management do not step in to help or support their team other than to offer criticism, make work processes that already suck worse with extra steps, and give terrible “rewards”. For example, my department got a monthly treat but management was strict that it couldn’t exceed $15 for the whole department. That’s all we’re worth? $15 a month? Pay is absolutely terrible for the job requirements. An absolutely dead end job that will absolutely destroy your faith in the mental health care system in this country. All of the high up psychiatrists and psychologists are super rude and condescending to the staff below them and are terrible to work with. Rogers only cares about money and will exploit their staff and patients are just a pawn in the system. Rogers claims their a non-profit but nothing about their culture feels that way. Stay away.

I want to take a moment to voice a concern that has been increasingly shared among clinical staff regarding the recent changes in policy and how they’re impacting morale and retention. Shifting from salaried to hourly pay, paired with the practice of sending staff home during low census, feels like another way this organization is reinforcing the message that we are expendable. It’s discouraging and has significantly deepened the feeling that clinical care is no longer a priority compared to operational efficiency.

Three years ago, it felt as though clinical work and operations held equal value. Now, with so many changes and the increasing micromanagement of clinical staff, it’s clear that the bottom line has taken precedence over the mission that initially drew many of us to this work.

We often hear the reminder to “remember why we’re here”—that we do this for the patients. And we do. For many of us, working with patients is still the most meaningful and fulfilling part of our day. But using that reason against us, while diminishing our support, supervision, and compensation, isn’t sustainable. We also need stability, leadership support, and a reliable paycheck.

Clinical supervision has changed dramatically. Having supervisors take on caseloads and lead therapists focused on chart audits, rather than development and mentorship, feels backward. Meanwhile, the plan for staff resignations continues to be “we’ll figure it out.” That’s not a plan—it’s a sign that leadership isn't truly valuing or investing in its clinical teams.

It’s disheartening to watch an organization that once felt supportive and mission-driven drift so far from those values. I hope leadership will consider the long-term consequences of these decisions—not just for staff, but for patient care and the integrity of our work.

During my time at Roger’s I absolutely loved the work I did. I loved working with patients and helping them find light in their life. That is something I will never truly forget. It changed my life and how I view others so much. 

But I can also say management and HR act like they care at first when you get hired and then when you need something from them after 6 months of being hired (benefits), they will make it the hardest thing ever to receive. Their systems are constantly changing which can be good but for Roger’s it is not. They never inform anyone of these changes and mess up your information so you will not receive full benefits. It took me nearly three months to get a tuition reimbursement, passive aggressive emails/texts from management on your days off, and not taking accountability for actions. If you are in school or have any other things going on in life, they will accommodate it at first and then not care once you are there for over 6 months. Their turn over rates are so high for a reason folks. I have no bad vibes with any of my management anymore and I have accepted my reality and that there is better out there for me, but my last few months at Roger’s were not easy and took a huge toll on my physical and mental health. Also if you want to grow within the company, it is very hard. Their application system is really confusing, they will promise you a job and then send a generalized message saying they moved on with better fit for the role. 

I will never forget that pain that they caused me but I will also never forget how life changing and eye opening the job is to help patients through the most tough and painful time of their life. 

Overall, I miss the patients so much but I do not miss higher ups. I hope that Roger’s can learn and grow to have more employee retention. 

I worked in the admissions department at Rogers for a little over a year as an intake specialist. I’m sad to say that I had a terrible experience working there. Rogers has the potential to be a great place to work but unfortunately it’s pretty awful. There are a lot of great, caring people who work there but many of those in management couldn’t care less about you. When I left, they were micromanaging the whole department and everyone in the office were very unhappy. Most of the people in the department were always looking for different jobs elsewhere. 

This job is (as many are) very underpaid. With the amount of stress that comes with it you would think we could get paid more, but, unfortunately you can make the same thing working in some retail positions.

I was also very disappointed in the way that those in other departments treat the admissions staff. Many nurses and PSAs are very rude to the intake specialists. This was typically due to a lack of communication between departments. So, because management is often inept at communicating with other departments, intake specialists are left to take the brunt of everything.

Also, be aware - the intake specialist position is (for the most part) a CALL CENTER position. You will spend 90% of your shift on the phone. You are also expected to take and return calls for every Rogers facility in the country, despite being given hardly any information about their facilities outside the state of Wisconsin. 

Training is also a joke, especially considering how often they change things. Management will often ask you to complete tasks you received little to no training on.

I loved being able to work directly with patients and I’m grateful to have had this learning experience… but, until Rogers makes some serious changes, I don’t recommend working here at all.

Rogers has gone through so many changes, especially within the last two years, that seem to be motivated by keeping up with revenue and bottom line, and not motivated by patient needs. Rogers PHP/IOP model used to be vastly different from their competitors, and in my opinion, offered so much more individualized treatment that really created lasting positive impact on patients. Now we are matching what any other partial model follows and I can foresee patient outcomes suffering. Staff are forced to go home without pay for now days at a time due to low census. This particular clinic has been in some version of low census for well over a year and for some reason can't figure out a good way to get people through the door to seek care. This has negatively impacted morale. Leadership is just part of a chain of command that mandates constant changes without providing any rationale or reason for why those changes are being made.  You are not given explanation for that "why" and then micromanaged when you are adjusting to constant change. Staff are expected to follow suit and if they express concern or differing opinions, on the surface leadership will make you feel heard but then do absolutely nothing about it after that. Some positives: good, consistent schedule, promotes work life balance, competitive pay and great benefits, great multidisciplinary team work (therapists, BS's and Drs.), opportunity to learn skills such as crisis management, group therapy, documentation, and access to connections/referral sources. 

Rogers is on par with most human services/behavioral health facilities. What I mean by that is that the pay is low compared to what you are asked/required to do, there is a high turnover rate (including in management positions), there is an overall lack of support from leadership, and the executive staff and board members are constantly and continuously making changes that they believe benefit the patients and staff but, in all actuality, hinder our ability to provide care. Instead of looking at actual problems within the company, they make weird changes like combining departments or changing patient populations that certain units serve.
Any time pay is brought up, or the comparison to how you can make a similar wage at a gas station these days, you're brushed off with "the work we do is more rewarding." Continuously being put into difficult situations with difficult patients to see one successful patient per month does not equal reward, if you ask me.
Overall, though, you'll get a similar experience to this one at most large-scale national behavioral health centers. Anyone who I talk to who has previously worked for Rogers and left has described the place as "traumatizing" because of the culture and would not recommend it to anyone. The only benefits I've really seen is the experience and the ability to network with others in the field.

I very much enjoyed my pool (per diem) position there. My coworkers in my department were all wonderful and supportive people, both to the patients and to each other. The work was fulfilling, challenging, and fun!

My two biggest complaints:
1) Management. My supervisor had a scattered management style and frequently made my job harder. She was kind but not always helpful. Also, HR asked me to remove a piece of social justice-themed jewelry, allegedly because a patient complained. Their "compromise" was that I be allowed to wear it in the offices, but not around patients. The argument that it was about making the space safe for patients does not hold water when the jewelry was specifically supportive of a targeted minority group that would benefit from seeing it. I did not pursue the issue because I knew I would be resigning for unrelated reasons soon.

2) Corporate healthcare. Electronic records and notes are AWESOME, but efficiency in creating these documents, and keeping them as generic as possible, seemed to outweigh accurately documenting the needs of the patients. Basically all the company cared about is that I saw patients, and didn't care what I did with them, as long as no one complained. The freedom to choose my approach was great; the lack of curiosity about patient process and success was not. Therapeutic idealism was out the window. 

DON’T WORK HERE. I could never recommend this place to therapists or student interns. I regret the trust I had in this company when I accepted the role. It seemed like a reputable place, but the poor management, disregard for staff and patients, and lack of ethics became painfully evident as the months went on. I was expected to things I had no training in with minimal support, and I felt like I was basically forced out of the job because the insufficient staffing left me with an unrealistic workload. I was also denied PTO due to insufficient staffing, and anytime someone takes PTO, the 2-3 other therapists have to cover those patients in addition to their own. I tried several times to bring serious issues to attention of the director and my supervisor. They were dismissive and told me I needed to be more “positive.” I was clear to me that patients and staff were not the priority. Knowing that people like this director work in healthcare feels disturbing to me. I don’t know what other locations are like, but the SKOKIE location has completely crumbled. The amount of red flags, mistreatment, and overtime (with no extra compensation) is not worth the 50k salary. Trust me, there are so many better places to work. I was so happy after leaving this place, and I truly hope this location can one day find new management and redesign their programs to be appropriately staffed and more supportive of everyone involved.
