The Oakland location is a hostile environment -- not only with some of the community members, but with some of the staff also. Some staff are confrontational and would even get into physical altercations with their coworkers...and they do nothing about it (oh, accept give a warning).

There is a serious lack of communication between management and the staff and depending on your department, you'll be training yourself. They also expect you to bend over backwards for them without additional pay or benefits. Lastly, they mostly hire people that were formerly incarcerated, are homeless, really young or people that are having a hard time getting a job which makes it really easy for them to take advantage of their workers. I could go on about this company, but the bottom line is that I wouldn't recommend it OR I would recommend to try the SJ location (maybe it's different over there).

The overall mission of the company is great, but there needs to be better execution and better treatment of its staff, so that the turnover rate isn't so high.

Roots Community Health is a great place to work if you're willing to do the work. It is all about the members' needs and collaboration with your multidisciplinary team for positive outcomes. Workplace culture is amazing and can also work to the benefit of the population being served at Roots Community Health. The mission statement, "Healing Our Community From Within," is what Roots is truly doing. It is a good place to start your career if you are dedicated to making positive changes in the community. I would recommend Roots if you want to make a change by improving health, supporting communities, and addressing social inequities.

A few gems, sadly a poorly run business. Ultimately, harms the same people they advertise as reflecting and caring about. Lifer managers police, criticize wasting energy and time, contributions are otherwise negligible. Org grows, unsustainably. Depts work in siloes. People leave every month min. Execs cash in on govt money, staff scrape by. It’s the job for you if you’re a decent actor who can turn a blind eye, remain silent, lie, risk patient health, prefer working with negative hopeless mindsets. Proceed with caution - mold and rotting signals a much larger system failure.

Best job I've ever had. Staff are really about the community. Those who aren't don't last! It's an innovative place so they're growing and changing to respond to what the community needs. If you don't like growth and change it might not be a good fit but I love seeing us do more and better things. Everyone has a voice and contributes to the mission. It's nice to be part of something that's successful and purposeful. Our community has high needs so it can be stressful at times but very rewarding because we actually help people every day.

Working at Roots was very STRESSFUL , there was lack of management , lack of communication and helpfulness. The staff was very messy and sometimes confrontational. The MAs lacked some basic skills and knowledge and they did not care to hire on when the clinic needed it most but instead just drive people back and forth from one clinic to another. It taught me a lot of things about clinic settings and dealing with a certain part of the community but other than that I do not regret leaving .

When I first started working at Roots I was excited about working for a Black led organization. What I didn’t realize was how little the management cared about their staff and the community. They overwork their employees and don’t pay them a livable wage. In addition, they belittle their employees and treat them like children and not adults. They will fire you for no reason and the entire work culture is toxic and stressful.  

Roots as a whole is cool. But working at the sign shop was terrible. The manager is unorganized and very unprofessional. He doesn’t make you feel welcomed there. Expects you to know everything right despite not realizing that every company is run differently and takes time for people to learn their way of doing things. And will let you go with no warning. 

Roots is standing out in the development and implementation of the Whole Person Care framework and a great asset to the community it serves.  While working roots I had the opportunity to gain much experience in lateral functions of the organization which has prepared me to advance in my career with emphasis in administration and leadership.

Completely unorganized, and unprofessional. Dont work here if you are serious about being a medical professional. I dreaded going into work every day, everyone wants to be a boss there. Every single person in there is unprofessional. The hr lady will tell everyone your business. How much you made, whose on child support, etc.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with with a Black organization that helps the community. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
High caseloads, disorganization, lack of training and lack of support. Low pay
