Royal Technologies

Royal is a good clean place to work.  The people are wonderful!  Love the team members!  They always have your back and are willing to help out when needed.  It works both ways, if they need help, I am there for them.  Royal has a fantastic ESOP program!  We have good insurance and a lot of little perks such as food for Saturday work, catered lunches several times a year, discounts on various items, etc.  The teams do potlucks frequently, which is great and shows they want to have fun together too.  Our Machine Operators have room for advancement to things like Tech Op, Utility, Supervisor or Quality.  Depending on their goals/education, they may even work into Maintenance, PE, Customer Service or Tooling.  Royal does help with tuition as well and has the Royal University for internal training.

The communication is good.  We have monthly updates that information is shared with us about plant key measures, benefits, quality, HR info, etc.  They also do fun activities and drawings for people that have had a "Great Catch" at those meetings.  We have Quarterly meetings with the owner and he shares how we are doing as a company.  He also meets with us for Town Halls.

Royal is a place that if you come to work as scheduled, put your best foot forward with a positive attitude, help and care for those around you, and perform with quality work, you will do well.  Basically, do the right thing and you will be fine and have a nice retirement.  It's about the big picture, not just the pay for the week.  Pay, benefits, nice people and a great retirement reward at the end!

Decent pay and benefits for around here. Management is terrible top to bottom! No accountability at all! You can make the same mistake several times and nothing is documented and enforced so people ignore it and laugh about it as soon as the start up meeting is over! There is an obvious preferential treatment of women because so few actually work in this position. There is lack of advancement opportunities which is mainly because they don’t want to have to train people for those roles. Instead they just settle with what they already have despite the incompetence displayed. The supervisors are more worried about being everyone’s friend instead of their boss and openly admit they don’t like disciplining employees!  I have a hard time believing most plants would employ them in similar roles. Especially considering they are all looking for other opportunities but never find them!  This dept is full of castaways from the bigger plants in town. They never eliminate the weaker associates because they just need bodies regardless of how effective they are. This is why quality people with skill and experience usually end up leaving! This plant has the potential to be a great place to work but until management steps up and puts forth the effort to hold everyone at every level to a standard with full accountability it will never achieve the desired results!  

The people here are great as long as one respects others and themselves thus respect is earned. If you like to work in the heat during the summer then this place is for you. Don't worry the building is heated during the winter. Do you have bills that need to get paid off? Come and work overtime, guaranteed 40 hrs up to 60 hrs max in your week. Insurance? Of course we have that once you are hired in. Choose from a Standard PPO or a Health Savings Account when enrolled into a High Deductible Plan which is basically Obamacare. Other than that, the work areas are usually clean as long as one had managed it into their fast paced workload.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The insurance is the best. The work isn’t bad either unless you are working around incompetent or lazy people.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at Royal is the constant drama and backstabbing that goes on. Overall very toxic work environment.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture at Royal is that no one cares. People are held to two different standards. Those who work and do their jobs and those who tell the supervisors what they will and won’t do. This also includes supervisors having no real authority to handle the toxic environment created by these particular employees which includes some supervisors. Stay away from this place. Much better is out there.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is anything but typical. Expect delays in getting your parts. Either the auditor is slow or the auditor is waiting on materials. The equipment doesn’t always run well enough to make rate. Most people are not forward with offering help as many won’t even look at you to say hello. Good luck learning how to run things as you will get rotated around a lot which increases the time it takes to learn. Stay away from this place as much better exists.

Royal Technologies is a very fast paced plastic injection molding facility. Manufacturing car parts to office chairs. It is a very demanding job in the materials department where I stocked the plastic pellets to the different production bays, while restocking finished product into inventory warehouses or onto a truck. The hardest part of the job was that there where not enough stand-up hi-lows for parts of the inventory to be done timely. There where only three stand ups to do the job. most of the time you had to come in early on your shift to get the work done properly. I enjoyed learning how to drive a stand-up hi low. My fellow co-workers all had great work ethic and that made it most enjoyable knowing everyone had a team effort to doing the jobs. Management was alright. Had one that just stepped up to first management position, did a fairly good job for being green. needed to work on their communication. I started off working as a machine operator. I had to inspect the parts from the molds and package them and place them on a skid for further inspection. The Hi-low position was presented to me by another co worker that was deploying to Afghanistan. I was able to take his position while he was gone.

It is often stated by those who have been with the company when it was primarily in Hudsonville, that it used to feel like family, but no longer does.  That was lost when the company branched out into other states.  However, the upper management and HR still treat it like a small local company it used to be as far as mindset.  Protecting those they have known for over 25 years, those they attend the same church with, and relatives who also work there.  There is an increasing separation between the production supervisors and those who hold equivalent importance, and the shift supervisors and employees beneath them.  There are too many who have gotten or kept jobs based on who they know, as opposed to what qualifications they have.  The Human Resources outside of each plant, is known to protect the management, and also to discourage any complaints by the rank and file.  Or as many say "can't complain because they'll do nothing, and if we do they'll put a target on our back."  The longer you are with the company, the more they make you feel inept, so you don't feel like leaving.

Royal is probably one of the best factories you can work in. The management genuinely cares about you and looks to make working there as good as it can be. 

A typical day at work consists of 2 hour rotations from stations, 30 minute lunch breaks, and busy work. 
The hardest part of the job can be simply not being able to do everything at once, but your co workers are usually there to help you.

The off shift and lack of room to be able to get onto 1st, as well as the set limited raises can be very discouraging. Summer heat can be excruciating because of the hot machines and no air conditioning, but the management does whatever they can to boost our spirits with things like frozen treats and lots of fans. The communication from Supervisor to operator should be improved.

The best parts of the job would have to be the environment. People working there tend to have relationships and smiles on their faces. Everyone knows everyone. The owner of the company regularly meets with the workers and asks what needs to be improved to make our jobs better, which is not seen in places like this usually.

I loved working at Royal. The only thing that kept me going to work each and everyday were my coworkers. Some of my best friends came from working at Royal. The pay, benefits and bonuses were amazing. 

The supervisors play favoritism. If you are not one of their favorites you can forget about a promotion. Also communication is out the window if you’re not a favorite. Making rate is a joke especially because your supervisor can “change” rate in their computer for their favorites and if not a favorite you are screwed for rate. Supervisors shouldn’t compare employees to other employees especially when one employees has been there longer then the other employee. Very unprofessional for supervisors to talk bad about employees to other employees and to say to an employee that they don’t like half the people in their bay. 

I hope Royal Technologies can fix these issues with the supervisors. They are a great company to work for but supervisors lacking job skills. 
 
My main reason for leaving is my supervisor gave me bad anxiety and it was difficult to want to go into work everyday.

Royal provides a safe, clean working environment. The company is very stable, and is growing, with plants in 3 different states. Management is typically open and available. There is NO Sunday work at the Michigan facilities, which is greatly appreciated. Ventilation in the summer is lacking. Very hot! In normal economy, within certain areas of the company, mandatory 6 day work weeks for months at a time are typical. Work load runs on the high side of expectations in the industry while hourly pay lags behind. They do have quarterly bonuses based on profits and several, very good insurance options. They are also employee-owned which is good if planning for retirement is important to you. Management is goal driven sometimes at the expense of personal lives of the employees. The culture is typical of a factory environment. There is opportunity for advancement and tuition reimbursement. If you are looking for a company you plan to stay with for a long time, you should consider Royal. 

In the beginning royal was a great place to work. However in recent months things have gotten chaotic. They keep taking in more business when we are already under staffed on 2nd and 3rd shift. When it comes to working Saturdays you won't know whether or not till last min if you work in molding and if you work assembly you will work every Saturday. Majority of the people seem miserable and moody. It's always ungodly hot from spring to fall so usually you're drained by 5hrs into your shift. Workers and supervisors have gotten lazier and dissappear for a good 5 to 30 mins even taking micro breaks while others work. There is favoritism to a degree. However the only real good thing I can say is the pay, health, and retirement, which will get thrown in your face if you complain. We've been losing people left and right (supervisors, utilities, auditors, ect...). High turnover rate
