As a transitioning military member, I was able to particiapte in the Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program with Ryerson at the Texas Steel Processing facility.  The interview process with HR and the management was outstanding.  All individuals openly communicated and were transparent in their expectations.  This was one of the main things that drew me to want to work with the Ryerson team.  Upon arrival for my 11 week fellowship, the employees and management quickly took me under their guidance and took an active role in my professional growth.  No question was "too dumb", and I have had some extremely informative discussions from people of all levels in the organization.  I have learned so much about the metal and fabricaiton industry, and I owe it all to the team here at the TSP plant.  It is truly a team effort here.  I always felt that everyone was working towards a common goal.  The hardest part of the job was the initial learning curve or understanding some of the technical jargon.  The most enjoyable part of the job is the daily interactions with the team here, and working to produce results.  As a soon-to-be veteran, this is a great place because it shares many parallels with the armed forces.  Planning, prioritization, urgency, professionalism, and a team mentality are all here.  The fellowship allowed me to find a place, and once an offer was presented, it took all but 2 seconds for me to say Yes.  I am truly excited to start my post-military career with the Ryerson team.

I've been fortunate to be part of the team at Howard Precision Metals for 36 years, and I can genuinely say it's an outstanding place to build a career. From my first year, it was clear that this company prioritizes its employees.  About   2-1/2 years ago our small family-owned company was purchased by Ryerson, and we became part of the Ryerson Family of Companies. Anyone who can get in here and stay here would be lucky. Apparently it's not SUPER easy for temps to get hired in, but as long as you do your job, they keep you around. 

I wasn't there long, but that was my fault. I had some things happen my first week that made me late, so I don't put any of that on them. They've gotta look out for themselves. I totally understand. 

Supervision on second shift is great. The plant manager is firm and all business but he seems fair and there if you need him. 

The biggest flaw that I encountered is air quality. LOTS of black dust. But, that's not really a big deal considering you're working with great co-workers and have a really good shift lead. Plus, more importantly, the bay doors are open from one side to the other so ventilation is good. That's just on second shift. I don't know anything about the other 2 shifts, but I hear they're not bad either. 

I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to work here and if ever given the chance, once my situation changes, I'd do it again. 

I have been with this company for nearly 2 months as an Admin Assistant, starting to have doubts if I want to stay here long term. Some things I have noticed that are red flags:
1. Nobody seems happy
2. Micromanaging at every level
3. Time off for any reason seems to be a problem, even though it usually gets approved
4. Entirely too much focus on bottom line and very little on employees
5. Work-life balance isn’t in their vocabulary 

It’s doubtful that I will accept a full time offer at the end of my contract. So far the company has fallen short of my expectations in most areas that I place high importance on. They don’t like the fact that their policies don’t apply to me as a contract-to-hire. I have requested time off for previously scheduled appointments and a family function, which was approved but not well received with me being so new. I had to leave early on 2 occasions which was also frowned on. The Plant Manager didn’t like my answer that “life happens” and we can’t always be at work, and that work isn’t my life. I don’t see them hiring me full time anyway because I don’t go for their nonsense. Which at this point is fine with me, I’ll stay home/enjoy life and draw unemployment for a few weeks. 

Ryerson is a place where there are the occasional opportunities to grow as an employee and to expand your knowledge in the industry.  The company has promoted from within and a union-bidding process helps to increase wage potential through an impartial process.  Favortism plays no role.
Most of the managers are fair but our supervisors' boss is a vindictive person who makes decisions that destroys morale, hampers safety in an already dangerous environment and hurts production.
Unfortunately his opinions filter to the warehouse floor.
We are free to make suggestions for improvement but unless you own it, that improvement won't happen.  Even if you do seek to help, mr clueless in charge will stifle it.  
Still, if you put a few years in to fighting the good fight, your odds to change increase and your work will bear more fruit.
Only one person stands between an ok shop with a few major issues and a strong workplace for growth.  



They are a solid and well established company but dont except them to care to much about your success. Took the job having inside sales, sales support, customer service experience but no knowledge of the metals industry. Was told they would teach me and train me into being a long term inside sales agent. Over all it could have been a great opportunity if the direct supervisor  was willing to do ANY sort of training, coaching and one of one directing. I was basically given a full desk of clients after sitting with my coworkers for a couple months and was excepted to learn everything on the job. Very much a learn as you go job but needed more training and care from management in order to succeed. Direct supervisor was cold, unhappy and no where near a leader. never reached out to me for how I was doing, to teach me anything extra or put forth any extra effort towards my success. Then I was let go for "not being the right fit". 

They say overtime isn't mandatory but write you up if you don't work overtime. They write you up for every little thing the closer it gets to time for you to get a raise so they don't have to give you anything. They don't care about your well-being at all and make you work yourself to death and again you get written up if you don't comply. You're brought in being told the company is like family and at first you may believe it. But soon you realize it's a little too like family. The toxic kind that stabs you in the back and doesn't really care about how they treat you. They only want to do things when the uppers are coming in to make it seem like they're doing their jobs. The manager acts like your friend but absolutely isn't. Every one here is so phony. They throw people under the bus and have others take blame who don't even know what they're being blamed for and there's NO communication at all. I don't recommend anyone work here unless you're okay to deal with drama because that's all this job is. 

The HR Operations manager is a liar. When I interviewed for the company I was told there would be training on all systems and I would be given more responsibility after training of these said systems. The HR Operations manager doesn't want anyone to learn more than her. She will not train her team on things they should be responsible for. She is a control freak that will not hand over duties. The HR Operations dept continues to have a temp employee through an outside agency that costs a lot of money per week instead of training the HR Operations staff on those duties. When these issues were presented to the upper management team, they brush it off as no big deal. Upper management doesn't want to deal with any employee conflict. They would not investigate any of the issues brought to them like a real HR dept should.

A typical day at works involves me working with the truck drivers, the foremen, and the sales team. On a daily basis I receive in material, update locations, make appointments, and problem solve. 

I have learned that working with a positive attitude often brings positive results.

The management team could have used a little more grooming.

I loved working with my old coworkers. We worked well together.

The hardest part of the job was the communication between the plant and office personnel was not always at its best. This is turn made it a bit more challenging at times while working.

The most enjoyable part of my job was working with external customers, and also working with the staff for as many years as I did.
