At SBH Health System, there are many supportive departments with managers dedicated to providing tools needed to succeed, grow, and provide excellent care. Ironically, the one department that does not do that is the HR Department. You will come in, interview and be painted a picture of growth and told that there are opportunities to cross-train in different areas and functions of HR but that is far from the case. In my last few months before resigning, I was the only full cycle recruiter managing all the vacancies for the entire organization including their clinics through out the Bronx with no temp coverage. During my time here, the Recruitment department shrank in size and my hours only grew. Requesting time off became impossible regardless of how early I gave notice to a point where HR Management cared more about coverage within the Recruiting department than me attending the funeral of my friend that passed away forcing me to miss it (this is a real example) as I watched other individuals in the department be given their time off when they requested. After those denials, Management would become aggressive in encouraging me to take random days off when my vacation time would cap out for weeks. On a regular basis, I had to listen to management blatantly discriminate against millennials. I was subject to lies, threats, and inappropriate comments from hiring managers on a regular basis and when brought to Management attention with proof, I was ignored  or told I was providing bad customer service. This does not reflect all hiring managers. I wont even mention the amount of vacancies they expected one person to manage alone. The benefits here are great because becoming sick through stress became my only time off. Avoid the HR Department. It is in your best interest. You will be worked until you become a patient.

Pros:

Flexible Schedule: While demanding, the schedule was accommodating when personal needs arose, such as taking time off for family or appointments.
Cons:

Caseload Size: The caseload can be overwhelming at times, with limited staffing making it difficult to dedicate sufficient time to every client.
Administrative Burden: Extensive paperwork and documentation requirements can take away from time spent on direct client work.
Compensation: While fair, the pay could be higher given the demands of the job and the cost of living in New York City.
Overall Review:
This role is highly rewarding for those passionate about helping others and making a tangible difference in their community. The organization's dedication to client-centered care and professional development makes it a great place to grow as a social worker. However, the workload and administrative tasks require strong time management skills and resilience.

Hello there!
Well i would begin with saying that i am currently a part timer at St. Barnabas Hospital and i have worked 6 months as a volunteer and then was offered the position in May 2015. I was offered to work the night shift 7a-11p weekends and holidays. That has been my shift since i've started. It is quiet different than the other shifts because we have more trauma patients coming in and other critical patients. We work more fast paced because we have no choice it tends to get really busy in the weekends especially the night shift let's not even mention the holidays. It is also different because the night shift we only have two registrars including myself at night so i would say that is the hardest part of the job is the shift and the fact that it is only two of us registering the whole ER department. The most enjoyable part is the ER life itself, well for me it is. We are a trauma hospital and that is what makes it more enjoyable for me because i have the chance to work close to doctors and nurses and i view things i never imagined.

The organizational culture within support departments contradicts the mission statement. I feel that my department can improve with better management, or better structure of how management operates. It is difficult for union employees to have a proper work-life balance. 

There also isn't enough room for advancement for union employees. Promotion is based on seniority, as opposed to the quality of work (1199 union rules). You could remain working part time for as long as 10 years before you become a full time employee at SBH, depending on the department. Most union employees are miserable, which has an impact on the overall work environment. 

Some managers make decisions based on personal feelings, as opposed to written policy procedures. It is difficult to distinguish who is being professional from those who will cut your throat. The most enjoyable part of the job is having paid time off and good health insurance. I recommend SBH as a career starter for the experience.

My day started at eight in the morning, I weren't excepted until nine, yet I always arrived a hour earlier. I learned new things, how to manage my time efficiently. As a health care provider, working here sharpen my skills on how to deal with large amount of diversity in and out of the health care setting, The hardest part of the job were knowing that the patients were in pain, especially the children. What I love most about the job were, getting to know my patients. I knew the days they were to come, how they needed to be cared for, and what they enjoyed talking about while they were being treated. I had a great time at St.Barnabas Hospital H.S, it were a wonderful experience.

I love the experience I got here however, your forced to work all type of hours including OVERNIGHT!! they have a “Mandation” requirement which they don’t explain in the interview oh and pre-mandation adding you on the sch forcing you to work for a shift you didn’t sign up for!! Unreliable workers so if an employee don’t show up for work your mandated to stay even if you have kids they don’t Care! They literally want you to prioritize SBH first, second, and last PERIOD!!!! And forget your personal life!! Money is good and experience but NO ROOM FOR GROWTH AT ALL!!! This job is basically for ppl with no kids or a life!! 1199 is non-existence so don’t think your joining a union because your not !! It’s SBH and the Directors rule!! 

Worked as a clinical SW, a couple of weeks into employment supervisor continuously made comments about having staff members written up if they didn't perform to her standards even though they didn't provide training or assistance. The case loads were hard to manage, but what made it worst was that the supervisor would send back your note if they didn't like your wording which made it difficult to keep up with case load work. Other staff was pleasant to work with, hours were great but supervisor made it impossible to feel comfortable being at work. Several staff members would quit shortly after starting.

I jumped from one department to another thinking it would be better till I noticed that the whole hospital needs new management. The bosses plus coworker do not care about you . They seem to love the people who work less . & being that you work more your always the problem they expect for you to not stand up for yourself best believe when you do they will do anything & everything to pick on you & eventually look to fire you. This place is horrible . Everybody that I started working with here had left I was the only one who stood but because I went to a different department but still the same shenanigans. They clearly don’t care about your personal life . If someone calls out you will be mandated ! 

The work environment can be considered hostile at times. We worked from home remotely during the crisis and we're not provided the tools needed. We needed to purchase our own equipment and use personal cell phones in order to contact clients. Caseloads continued to rise despite the demand already present.  If in the office there was little to no support from superiors who were not insight. Bilingual compensation (which was not much) was revoked despite this demand as well. On a positive note the experience needed to fulfill your clinical goals was definitely present. 

A typical work day includes: Staff Coordination; Quality Control; Quality Control Evaluation; Streamline Workflow Analysis; Staff Scheduling; Laboratory Inventory; Payroll and Overtime Control; Laboratory Design and Re-structuring; Automated Instrument Evaluation and Implementation; Test / Analyte Evaluation and Procedures; Laboratory Inspection Preparation; Annual Budget; Staff Evaluations; Staff  Related Union Issues / Grievances; Maintaining a clean well-organized Laboratory; proficiency test / result corrective actions and meetings.
