SHELTER, Inc.

My typical work day, great question! Well for me no two days are ever the same.  I come in the office, I may have donations to bring in, or a volunteer project to lead. Some days I have to give  a presentation to a company, a school, Rotary club or any other organization that may want to hear more about SHELTER Inc. I answer phone calls, maintain email correspondence, help facilitate volunteers for special events. I connect people with different resources or help bring community involvement to our cause. I also do my part to contribute to social media and maintain our presence on those kinds of platforms. I work with different case managers to help get resources for some of our participants different needs. I work with young volunteers and teach them quality computer skills, life skills, and have them research our agency to see how different people with different challenges in life overcome and rise above barriers. I work hard on making holidays special and memorable for our participants. I seek out potential Donors and Board members who are looking for a way to be involved with a Non-profit. So with that being said everyday is a new day for me!

This organization has the potential to be great with a few changes. Organization and knowledge of the people the organization they well serve is needed. Organization can benefit from cultural competency courses and fair housing training. Staff are overworked, underpaid for the amount of work they are required to do. Upper management is the main problem, due to their incompetence in regards to low income housing, homelessness, mental health, and Housing First model. People have become product and numbers and their is no move to understand the organization and the mission statement has been forgotten. A revamp is needed. 

I loved working for this company. If I could have physically taken the work load- I would still be there! It is a hard job. You get attached to participants, you get attached to staff. both of whom I miss. There are some inconsistencies but given that there are so many different personalities and people that you deal with on a continuous basis- I expected it. Sometimes, I did not always feel backed by the company; but  always found the job worth it. My physical limitations made my job hard for me. But it is a job worth doing- for however long you can.

I worked here and the manager I had gave no direction no orientation just heres your desk   I didnt know when   lunch was it was just unorganized in this  department All staff around me had warned me no one stays in position long.    Jewlery and snacks in desk could prove it. Other team members warned me the supervisor  was all over the place i gave my all and was let go. I believe the revolving door is because of this manager, its a shame to i was so excited about the opportunity  to serve in my community but instead  got a manager has no people skills and lacks the knowledge of how to supervise his employees

once upon a time SI was a great place to work for. The MISSION was obvious and people who knew what they were doing worked there. Directors who obviously do not know what SI stands for were hired. And from there it went down. Pay isn't good, staff act like high schoolers especially the much older in age staff. Process and procedures are everywhere ( disaster), budgets are always being cut so your job is never guaranteed, departments cant get it together when working with each other, your told you look like a client, micromanaged, team does not exist here.

I’ve enjoyed my time here at SHELTER, Inc.! The managers are very supportive and genuinely want to see you grow in your career. I’ve been given lots of opportunities to update processes, propose changes ect. It’s a wonderful mission and feels good doing work that matters. I’ve enjoyed the company picnic, potlucks and holiday parties! One thing I think they could improve on is more visibility on what other teams are working on and the data about how much we’ve helped the community. Overall, been a great place to work and would recommend it to others!

A typical day at work would include me Taking attendence of all clients, server breakfast lunch and dinner, Answer phone calls, watch over location, and keep housing clean.

I learned that giving back makes a job more enjoyable.

My Managment/co-workers are pretty much older than me but for the most part a joy to work with.

The hardest part of the job was getting to and from work.

The most enjoyable part of my job was interacting with the homeless clients and their families.

For the last 2 years I have had the privilege of working at SHELTER, Inc. and assisting in the fight against homelessness.  This is a daunting task at times but one individual and one family at a time we are making a difference in people's lives.  It isn't always easy but it is always worth it.  I work harder than I have at any other job, however I go home at night knowing it is helping.  

The Agency is growing and expanding into different counties and the hard work of all the staff is recognized.

Horrible place to work you have no support from the company. They do not have any resources for the participants. You have a very high caseload. They make however they are never kept. The Shelter Attendants are given more respect than case managers in fact they can tell the case managers what to do. There’s fights, illicit drug use. The management is horrible!

Shelter Inc provides shelter for homeless, with a focus on families with children. Their mission is great, however the work environment not so much. Staff are under valued and lack diversity. The so called leadership doesn’t have a real connection with the community they serve, nor desire to have one; which leaves one to wonder if they truly care about the homeless crisis.
