I started at Saint Joseph Health System as a new graduate nurse in 2003. I was trained by one of the best nurses, and women I have ever known. She let me do things and let me learn at my own pace. I credit her with much of my success and confidence. I now am a lead preceptor for new employees and try to train them the way she trained me. I love being on the elevator on the way to the sixth floor where I work, every time the door opens, I see someone that I know from some other department and we always exchange a hello and a smile. It is like a large family and I love that about Saint Joseph Health System. They have given me a second home, a place to grow and develop my skills and talents. I am constantly encouraged by my co-workers and leaders to push myself to be better and to create a better experience for my patients. I love that I can call my co-workers and leaders friends. People care about each other outside of the hospital as well as inside. We cheer one another on and feel each others defeats and hurts. I would recommend this employer to anyone and I am only choosing to leave it for relocation reasons. I will always cherish the relationships and experiences I have had a Saint Joseph Health System.

X-ray department is terribly managed. No incentives or bonuses for doing extra, like other departments. The supervisor has favorite employees and allows them to behave poorly.  Large majority of employees are not motivated or nice to each other. Some employees are expected to do more than others.The equipment is heavily used and poorly maintained. Raises are minimal and at the discretion of the supervisor.
 Pay is ok, but is not enough for the work load.
 Meetings are mandatory and may not be attended during your scheduled shift. Department meetings are held on Saturdays, no option to change the day. If you don't attend, your performance is dinged. Per diem help is minimal.
The facility is nice, as it is relatively new. The director is nice, but so busy..no time to recognize what is happening in the various departments. Good place for new grads to gain experience, but none seem to stay for long. Most want to train in other modalities.
I am currently employed here, but am looking at other facilities because I am moving soon. I have no children, but this job will affect family life. Work life balance here is poor.

It is a large organization with many different managers some of whom are excellent, and others not so great. I have had three totally awesome managers/supervisors, and three not so great. The organization has implemented "just culture" philosophy. Overall, the organization values their employees and their diversity. It is a faith-based organization which I really appreciate. The cafeteria food was great when I started, but now it is terrible most of the time. The wellness initiatives sound good, but don't actually do anything to promote employee wellness. The building and campus is nice, though they are always short staffing EVS and the kitchen. In general, the organization stays pretty up to date on technology relative to other hospitals. Overall, the organization is a great place to work. I would stay there if I had a better opportunity for advancement. The lack of opportunity is particular to my area of expertise; there are lots of advancement opportunities for those with a clinical background.

I had the opportunity to grow with SJRMC for 14 years.  I started out scheduling for the Cardiology Department upon hire.  There was advancement from the department within.  I was trained on being a Treadmill Technician and EKG Technician.  The Department Manager was amazing.  She made it a point to "round" daily to all of the other departments that she managed and asked how we individually were doing and if we needed anything.  We had monthly staff meetings for the entire Diagnostic Imaging/Testing departments to give us all of sense of team work which was information as to what the other departments were doing and we were kept informed feeling a sense of a Team.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Mostly good people. But management it’s not professional enough. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You don’t know what to expect. Everybody smile around, super friendly, but suddenly they make decisions that ruins your life. I had terrible experience with that facility. Only one person who were really helpful and really kind among the supervisors. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not bad. I would say good. But it’s nothing absolutely when you don’t have any trustworthy relations with supervisors.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Not much. That weren’t able keep busy and that was one of the reasons they kicking out the people with no explanations or with super stupid one.

I regret taking a job here.  I feel sick to my stomach every morning when I go to work. For awhile, there were no hours available, but they cut pay in half for some employees with almost no notice and staffing is now at dangerously low levels.  They have also gotten rid of phlebotomists and cut respiratory therapists so units are drawing their own blood with little to no training and breathing treatments are taking forever to be done.  Day shifts are the worst with one nurse taking on six high acuity patients on the Med-surg units.  They tell you staff will be in to help mid-shift to get you to sign-in but then the house supervisor floats them to another unit when they arrive and you are stuck with the dangerously high patient load that you were told was only temporary until help arrived. So unsafe.  

I only worked here for 3 months and it was hands down the most toxic workplace I’ve been in. I was doing my online training like I was told and was being talked about by other employees because I “wasn’t doing anything.” I was told my CT courses would be paid for and when it came time to pay they said no they don’t do that anymore. They sent a student to train me in surgery when they aren’t even an employee or licensed. My PHI was even compromised by a co-worker which had very sensitive diagnoses and I was never told, I heard through the grapevine after I left, an employee told me. I was also treated like garbage by a provider in the ER who I worked with countless times. I don’t recommend. Stay away. 

Faith based care is real, and it is what has kept me there for so long. The culture is changing though. The newer nurses think the nurses station is where they work like it is home base, they run in the room and do a task and run back out to the desk to be with their friends. Nurses are hired to care for patients. Patients are generally in their beds in the rooms. This might be happening at other hospitals too, could be a generational thing. But stronger management would help to keep nurses at the bedside caring for the patients as they are being paid to do.

Typical work day is busy in nature with pre and post op care for most patients coming through the unit. Learning is a daily routine, as no two patients are the same. The management is exceptional, always willing to help and goes above and beyond to ensure patient and employee safety. The co-workers are very knowledgeable and dependable, helping in any way they can. The hardest part of the job is not knowing how a patient will react to a procedure. The best part of the job is knowing that, whatever happens, you will have the appropriate amount of hands and tools at your grasp to appropriately and accurately take care of the patients.

I love working in healthcare, however this facility has had more sentinel events and devastatingly poor management as my time working there has progressed. It has been disappointing to see the patients suffer as a results. Staffing and management are consistently unreliable. The education and push for new grads to come off of orientation has led to some serious consequences for our patients. Cutting costs/corners from EVS to Physicians has been extremely problematic in providing appropriate care.
