Extremely poor leadership within certain a department. 
An old department  with a manager with no leadership experience. The configuration manager will micromanage you, provide you with an environment with convoluted processes For your failure. Once you point out those redundancies within their processes and make suggestions they will not take criticism but punish you for them and if you continue on that path to suggest an environment with less redundancies within their current process and "get the work done" attitude you will be terminated.  The team itself has a good knowledge But the leadership is still in its infancy and does not understand how to manage a team let alone identify areas and opportunities to change their processes for the better to ensure shorter timelines and successful completion of smalle ticket items. As a configuration analyst, you will be asked to perform duties that of a project manager a business analyst, because the configuration manager does not want to push back to other departments to get approvals that should have been there when the ticket was received.
 If you do show a strong side and point out these failure points. You will be micromanaged and ultimately fired without any action plan, any verbal warning, or any written warning. 
Would I have taken this job knowing how this "manager" acts, reacts to constructive identification of areas of improvement, then no I would not have join their team. 
  If you are looking for employment within San Francisco health plan I would suggest against it if you are looking in the configuration department due to its leadership.

If leadership is reading this.... you get an F. 
If HR director is reading this.... get better.
If a prospective applicant is reading this... don't do it.

In closing  this was not a knee-jerk post but something that should be pointed out, for your benefit not mine.


A typical day involved completing the scheduled tasks from the production runbook I was tasked with maintaining as well as triaging and closing bug tracking tickets. There were around 70 daily, weekly, and monthly tasks many of which were interdependent and time sensitive.  This could consume anywhere from a third to three quarters of my day depending on which tasks were scheduled. Remaining time was allocated for meetings regarding ongoing projects, fixing, updating, and optimizing of processes for scheduled tasks, as well as fielding reporting and ad hoc data analysis queries from various departments within the organization.  I obtained a broader knowledge of SQL concepts working with an enrollment population of 60,000 members as well valuable knowledge in excel for identifying duplicate records as well.  Most of all, I learned how to manage my time and allocate blocks for specific tasks in order to complete a rather staggering workload.  The most challenging aspect of the position was managing the sheer volume of work while constantly receiving new requests.  The most satisfying aspect was completing a new report, or correcting an error in the database that restored a member's eligibility, thus allowing them to receive services.

Initially we would obtain a patient list from the coordinators before arriving at the hospital. We counted the number of paper charts avail and determined what was missing. If we reviewed electronic records we kept track of what was missing for further discussion. When in the office, we reviewed the data we abstracted and entered the data into two tracking program -Sharepoint. We also reviewed electronic records from the Public Health Dept and entered our core measure data into Sharepoint. My core measures included HTN and Prenatal -Postpartum. I checked my e-mails, however, I spent more of my time abstracting and entering data. My fellow abstractors were supportive and both nurses. The Management team was not supportive and unprofessional at times. I enjoyed working in downtown San Francisco and visiting the major hospitals and clinics in SF. The hardest part of the job with coping with the disorganization of the project and determining what was expected for core measure abstraction.

I was blessed to work in the Prior Authorization Department through an agency. My contract lasted so much longer than I anticipated, and I am so grateful. I met the most amazing people in my department. From the nurses, to my lead, to my manager, to the medical directors. They were ALL top notch, caring, and overall, the best job I ever had. 

I had come from a very toxic environment and SFHP healed my heart as a nurse. I could not recommend this company more. 

The PA department in particular is what I can speak to, and the manager and lead were extremely accommodating to our personal lives, children, spouses, health issues, etc...I wish more companies were like this and they would retain employees. 

A typical day at SFHP is very fast paste and competitive. I learned a lot at SFHP within my 4 years being there.  They presented a lot of opportunity for me to extend my resume. Depending on who your management is, they may be fair or not. I enjoy their benefits most compare to all other companies I have worked for.  The most enjoyable part of the job is open floor plans with adjustable standing desk. It is located in the heart of embarcadero area, walking distance from the ferry building.

SFHP is a decent company to work for. Lack of career advancement and a little bit of favoritism sometimes bothers employees. As an IT employee, even if you are a high performer, you sometimes get over-looked during key decision making process.

Work life balance is a winner at SFHP and people are very friendly. They occasionally encourage employees to go to conferences and help them take courses and stuff.

Overall my experience was great and I would recommend this any friend that needs job security more than anything.

This company has poor management (at least at the department where I work for). There is no team culture. It seems that employees here even working for more than a year in the company, they still does not feel comfortable. 2 supervisors, bickering on meetings in front of employees, the manager does not do anything about it. As a said, poor management. I work as a temp right now, and was told that will be hired on in 2 months. I 've been there for almost 3 months and nothing. I also heard that once hired, the benefits doesn't kick in until another 60 to 90 days.

I no longer work here. My manager was very supportive especially related to quality of work life balance. That manager has since left the company. 
Most positions are underpaid. The company has an unstable work environment since getting a new CEO two years ago. Many long term staff have left and taken with them important institutional memory. I used to love the idea of returning to work there at some point but no longer would consider it.

Small organization serving the poor of San Francisco. Management is paradoxically very money oriented. No opportunity for advancement. Turn over is in the 20%. Prob. bottom 20% of Medicaid health plans in California.

I absolutely adore this company. Everyone has been so incredibly friendly, and in my department, the manager and lead are the best I have ever had. Very considerate of nurses and their outside lives. The work life balance is excellent, their pay is on point, and its just a great place. I came from a place that was horrible and SFHP is a breath of fresh air.
