Sanguine Biosciences

Sanguine is a nice, small company. I've worked at several place where a large fraction of what we did simply made no sense. Some of it was cargo cult startup culture. More of it was less competent managers holding on for dear life. Not so at Sanguine. Everything we do is, well I cringe to say "goal oriented" but it all makes sense in the context of trying to grow the business and do things that our customers want. 

This means I know what I am supposed to do most of the time, and that means I can do it. I've never had difficulty doing the important tasks of my job. If fact I enjoy doing the real, important tasks. I love making things and having customers tell me they are genuinely useful (whether they state this verbally or with dollars, or both). When you work at a company like Sanguine, with a team with this level of clarity and this lack of extraneous "put on a show" BS, work is often a pleasure.

We are growing and not by selling VC dollars for 50 cents a piece. Nope, we are doing it the old fashioned way, by selling people goods and services that they want and need, for marginally more than it costs us to produce them. That may not be glamorous. That may not be the sort of things you boast to your friends and family about, but it makes things stable and predictable and it doesn't attract the wrong kind of person.

For our technology development we tend to hire a smaller number of more advanced/intelligent developers. We use only as much process and documentation as are needed to enable the group to work together efficiently. I've worked at enough places that were more about process and artifacts than development, that I dread/chuckle when a friends starts a work story with "so the scrum master at my work...". 

Potential down sides are those which are unavoidable at a small company. If you are used to having a huge staff to farm out all the actual work to, while you plan and put things together, that won't work here. We are small and we don't hire a person to do task X until X becomes enough of a side burden to people that it justifies a new hire. So often if you identify something that needs to be done, you end up having to do it. 

There seems to be a lot of potential for advancement within the company. Not in my department yet because it is still small, but I have seen several people start at the entry level and through a combination of initiative and coaching, rise to management level positions.

Work itself is incredibly rewarding. We partner directly with motivated patients to help accelerate drug development, which makes a tangible difference. This mission fuels my dedication, as I integrate both my scientific and military background to contribute meaningfully. The fast-paced, challenging nature of the work keeps me engaged and enriched.

Benefit of remote work; however, this comes with the expectation to work well beyond the standard 40-hour week. After-hours calls and responding on days off are common, which can make it hard to maintain work-life balance. PTO was challenging to secure, and my military leave was met with disapproval from management, despite its necessity.

There are notable drawbacks, including a high employee turnover rate, with people leaving frequently. This turnover, combined with chaotic software systems, creates a lack of continuity and expertise to address issues effectively.

Leadership is a concern, as well. The company struggles with integrity at the management level, where young, inexperienced managers often make decisions based on favoritism rather than merit. High performance may not guarantee stability if you don’t align closely with managerial expectations, which creates an unpredictable and sometimes unprofessional work environment.

I enjoyed my time at Sanguine Biosciences overall. The role offered remote flexibility, and I truly valued leading my team. I also strongly believed in the company’s mission of supporting patients who volunteer for clinical trials to help advance solutions for their illnesses.

That said, there were challenges. After my initial supervisor—who was excellent—left due to limited growth opportunities, I reported to a new manager and the experience shifted. Despite consistently strong performance reviews, I was unexpectedly let go without prior discussion of any issues.

In my view, there were concerns with favoritism, uneven distribution of responsibilities, and limited openness to new ideas. High turnover and inconsistent communication across management.

Overall, Sanguine has a meaningful mission and dedicated people, but prospective employees should weigh these positives against the challenges with management and stability.

Sanguine has done a great job of fostering a culture where employees are always willing to help one another and genuinely care about the work they're doing. Management is very open to discussing changes and issues within the company and gives us ample opportunities to meet with them and discuss. At this point, most of the positions are work from home.

The hardest part of the job is definitely the pacing. It is very fast-paced work, and there is always something to do, so it may seem overwhelming from time to time. But, there's also always someone willing to help, so you are rarely (if ever) alone in a difficult task.

Sanguine has experienced substantial growth over the past few years and with that came significant sacrifice as it relates to family time, pace of the workplace, and more. Many people have been promoted, and many are on the cusp of promotion. Performance is strong, and we have good environment overall - that said, the pressure of performance at times interrupts that atmosphere. 

In 2020, we can do a better job of continuing to invest in activities other than the business itself - volunteer days, more vacation days, more events outside the office, and professional development for the staff. As a leader, I'm more comfortable with that than ever before, mainly due to the fact that we have very high quality staff with great values and work ethic.

Company still has a start-up feel where there are occasional changes. This can be exciting and not an issue to some, but it can also be a downside for people who do not like change and do not like to adapt to new strategies.

Sanguine Bio offers a collaborative and fast paced work environment dedicated to the mutual growth of the employees and company as a whole. There is constant opportunity for creative problem solving and a mutual respect for the input of all employees, regardless of their tenure. Management team is extremely dedicated to helping their employees develop new skills that will benefit them at Sanguine and beyond. I started here with little prior work experience and was amazed how passionate everyone from team members to the CEO were in my personal growth. Sanguine Bio is a fast growing company that values its employees and offers constant opportunity for advancement.

Sanguine is a great place to start your career whether you are interested in clinical research or business, you will learn a lot as you progress in your role. There are ample opportunities to learn about different areas of the company including business, marketing and clinical operations. Sanguine does a great job of identifying each employees' strengths to ensure they are placed in the right role and will continue to grow with the company in its success. If you're willing to put in the hard work and demonstrate your passion and dedication for the company's mission of accelerating research and empowering patients, you will be successful here and there will be room to grow.

Sanguine is an amazing company with an innovative and meaningful business model and better people. The office is full of bright and talented individuals, and it seems like Sanguine has a knack for attracting top talent. If you care about making a difference in people's lives and want to help advance medical research, this is the place to be. 

If iI could change one thing it would be the transparency behind the advancement/promotion process, and the benefits aren't perfect. Company doesn't provide 401k matching and the salaries could be more competitive and up to the industry standard.

Overall, this a great place to be if you want to be part of a tight-knit, hard working office culture.

A few months ago, I would have said Sanguine was an amazing company to work for as a mobile phlebotomist, and a great way to earn extra money. The pay was great, and there were a lot of opportunities for appointments. Now with their new system for accepting appointments, it’s nearly impossible to get jobs within my area. I only get offers for jobs way too far out, and the ones that are close to me are always taken before I’m able to view the offer in the app.  You have to accept jobs as soon as they are dispatched, without knowing if they fit your schedule or knowing the details of the job. If not, you will lose the opportunity. I wish they would revert to their old system.
