To say patient transport is hard would be an understatement. Many people look down on them and in my time of working there, I lost count how many times I heard "that's just the transporter". It felt very degrading as that is an imperative job to make that entire hospital run smoothly. Doctors order tests to be done by a certain time, who brings those patients? There were many days where it didn't matter how fast you moved, 25+ patients could be pending in the system which lead to many unhappy patients. Understaffed first shift which was always the busiest.

A typical day involved clocking in, logging into the Teletracking system and picking up a job. Once paged, you call the floor to see if the patient was ready. They either went by stretcher or bed. Get to the floor, get help, fill out and have their chart signed. It amuses me because I wish it were as easy as it was to write that out. 

Two Very high expectations: If ever slow, you have to call the Teletracking every 3 minutes or you're written up. And the average transports must take under 20 minutes....

100% of the time, there is no telling what you're walking into when you get to the floor. Did the nurse tell them? Are they ready? Are they conscious? Demented? Anything broken? Did the nurse pull their meds yet? Are they soiled and need to be changed first? Do they walk? Is there Cna help? Are there proper sliding sheets available? Does an IR nurse have to go? Just these few things alone could delay a job by 15 minutes, and if a job would be rescheduled, it looked bad on our part and the receiving end would get mad. 

There were a handful of nurses I absolutely adored and admired for their hard work, attentive nature, and respect towards Transport, their patients and the staff on their floor. However, there are more handfuls of nurses who couldn't be taken away from their charting. And how dare Transport bother them about anything regarding their patients. It was a very very unusual observation, as many spent years and thousands$ to care for people they couldn't care less about. I most certainly understand that being a nurse is mentally exhausting, but you should never let that get in the way of your performance.

The Transport management changed dramatically in my time of working there. It went downhill quickly and I still wasn't sure who my actual supervisor was on the day I left. I had 4 or 5 different "red shirts" with 20 different rules they followed and some times I really questioned their ability to hire quality people. I have never seen more people filter through an area. There were times I felt like I was in High School. All that mattered was getting a spot filled on the schedule, even when informed about their performance on the floor. It saddened me. Sitting  behind nurses stations on their phone, flirting with Cnas, yelling at staff for taking too long, walking around with music playing on their phone, walking around cursing. 

If you kept yourself under the radar and worked your butt off, life in transport was one heck of a job. There were chances for OT, after 6mo you get PTO but the pay was deplorable for the job itself. The base pay was just recently raised and the new hires are hired on what the "veterans" just got up to. I could make a list about all that was unfair in that department. 

There were less than 5 people in that entire Transport department who were incredible human beings that were amazing at what they did. And there are over 60 people in it, if that tells you anything. 

For a billion dollar company, they should strive for a billion dollar performance from one of the very underrated faces of what makes that place what it is.

First and foremost the pay is not appropriate for the amount of work that is expected. I feel extremely underpaid for the work that I am providing. There seems to be a high turn over rate for employees. Compared to when I started the rate of employees that come and go has remained the same. One of the first questions I asked myself was “why do people come and go so often?”. I wondered if it was just a trend with society or if it was something more job specific to this facility. Having been here now for over two years I’ve experienced the good along with the bad. There is a form a favoritism that lingers within the department stemming from family ties. It is however a really good place to get your foot in the door whether you are interested in an operating room position (nurse, surgical tech) or a career in sterile processing. The knowledge I’ve gained was a direct result of my desire to learn. The training you receive does set you up for success, I was not left feeling like I was left to swim with the sharks. However, there is always something new to be learned and from every experience I was able to learn something to help with future situations. Another area I must review is  management. Management needs a healthy re-evaluation. I believe that they could do a much better job of understanding their employees instead of persecuting them for actions outside of their control. Every employee should have the right to speak and be heard without fear of backlash from their superiors. When the second in command within the department has family ties and those ties become increasingly more apparent as time progresses, then, that fuels a negative response from the hard working individuals who do not get the same slap on the wrist reactions from management. When you get punished for an action that another employee simply gets a slap on the wrist for, you question whether this is a company you feel comfortable working for. There is either a lack of awareness or a willful ignorance that is leading to these high turn over rates. Management should be held accountable just as any other employee.

This review is not a reflection on the hospital but on the public safety department itself.  The hospital system itself is amazing and always treats their staff in a kind manner.  I worked for the public safety department and I have never felt so jaded and back stabbed in my life.  I have worked in the field to help people for over 20 years and this was by far the worst department I have ever worked for.  I joined the department with hopes of advancing and moving up in the ranks while finding new ways to provide to the community we serve.  When I joined the department it was amazing; management had an open door policy, leadership such as the seargents all the way upto the captains were friendly, kind, lead by example...shortly after, I started to realize that it was a "clique" kind of place.  If you werent part of their group than you had nowhere to go other than out the door.  Once a position opened it was already given to a member of "the group"  slowly the department shifted in the wrong direction.  It became a dictatorship!  The department is ran by a nurse...WITH NO PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND...A NURSE!  Let that sink in.  How can a nurse run/manage a department that is built on the basis of PUBLIC SAFETY...thats like a plumber running wallstreet.  They say you are part of the team but in reality you are just part of their scheme...they provide you will tools and training but god forbid you use any of it.  If you do something that was provided in your training or your tool belt, you then have to worry about having your job the next day.  The department doesnt care about what is going on in personal life.  I had a family member in the ICU and because I called out several different times (which I understand puts a burden on the department...but they were in the ICU dying...fighting for their life) I was given the option to leave because I could not fulfill my role.  While there, god forbid I needed backup...goodluck!  Backup would show up and stand there while you're on the ground wrestling someone.  Out of all my jobs ive ever had...THIS was the WORST

I worked in Sterile Processing. It is a good place to learn the trade then find a better paying place to work for. The department has high turnover rates, Awful healthcare benifits(hospitai is  self insured.)  Only pay for 2 holidays, poor communication and trainning, despite no spanish speaking on work floor spanish is spoken by manager and fellow employees due to relationships,. Enforcement of departmant rules is subjective to relationship with management. Expect high volume of work with insufficient properly trained staff. Errors that pose patient negitive outcomes are not taken seriously as management claims they do. I suggest that work in SPD to learn this trade 1 to 2 tears then move to another department or employeer that has better benefits and pay like Doctors or Bayfront. The hype about best 100 places to work does not apply to sterile processing. Should be well treat you like a red hair stepchild. Equipmet used in department is was not designed to handle volume of work. Poor planning and poor layout of this department hope this all gets corrected for patients saftey in the future as this hospital grows. The hospitial does have a nice food court, employee health center only for first shift they dont see 2nd or 3rd shift employees those shifts have to pay copays to go to PCP urgent care or Emergency.  Most other emplyees are nice to greet you when outside of SPD. Hospital employee 403b match is a joke you dont get to keep the 4% untill after 5 years of employment.  Dont get hurt while on vacation away from home insurance wont pay the claim. You can make suggestions but dont expect any follow up.  Most common response from a suggestion is we are working on it. I hope things change for the better and someone who can make the changes to improve SPD will do something to make it happen, not just say we are working on it and business as usual.

Management focused on being punitive rather than  encouraging and 
morale driven.  New upper management at Bayside Behavioral Health is deceitful, threatening and retaliatory.  HR does not intervene until flooded with complaints. Then they do the bare minimum.  In any other state the environment would be consistent with bulling and a hostile work environment. Constantly being told by the DON that she has free will to fire anyone.  No process or protocol followed, she just says your fired. New facility director has no clue and is being hand fed by  the DON negative and derogatory lies about staff in which she has now lost all credibility with staff and lacks any leadership connection. 
 
ALWAYS under staffed putting patients and staff at risk.  Patients have had life threatening falls, Geri-psych mixed with acute violent psychotic patients, adolescents have to walk through the acute psych unit to get to meals, adolescents are put on the adult unit when there is over flow and at times lack supervision while the PCT's do their rounds.  Dangerous and egregious.  RN License is always in jeopardy but if you say anything your targeted.  

Staffing and Management is so bad the hospital is recruiting travelers b/c no one in a 100 mile radius will work there.  Gaining a very bad reputation with in the pysch community over the past year. Once you are employed at Bayside the chances of getting a position in the Main House is nil. Main house pays more and has more opportunities.  Bayside has no growth opportunities and no advancement structure. They keep bad nurses and get rid of the good ones. Stressful, understaffed, dangerous environment.

I have worked in this hospital for many years. Throughout those years, I have seen how this hospital, its management, and its staff would rather do ANYTHING other than the right thing. 

If you go to management over issues noticed on the units, they are quick to point the finger back at you. If you're a model employee, you are treated like dirt. And God forbid you bring up a patient safety concern. Because they will turn a blind eye to that, too. 

Nurses are RARELY rounding on their patients. I've seen this play out over and over, many times resulting in a negative outcome for the patients involved. When reported, again, YOU are the problem. 

The quality of staff that management has brought on in the past few years has also greatly diminished. Especially when it comes to the PSAs. Most sleep half of their shift, don't care about the patients or the job, and are impossible to work with as they have no work ethic. 

Management changes have also brought the PSA department down. They're more interested in taking a vacation every other week than doing anything that makes sense or helps their department. 

The changes that they DO implement are rushed and pushed upon staff who scramble to implement the changes, but because management has never done the job nor asked what WOULD help their department, it creates chaos for the workers and the units we have to constantly take heat from, as the changes aren't communicated to those they affect most: patients and patient caregivers. 

All in all, unless you enjoy being an empty shell at the end of your time here, RUN from this hospital as fast as you can.

This is a magnet hospital and RNs need a minumum of a baccalaureate degree to work here. RNs hired with an associate's degree need to earn a BSN within three years per the contract when they are hired. 

SMH's allotment for tuition reimbursement that's allowed per year is low compared to the cost of education, and in comparison, isn't that much more than what I received from a previous employer over 10 years ago.  They only reimburse up to $200 per credit hour, which reflects in state tuition rate. If one chooses a private college, the most they can receive is $200 per credit hour. Subsequently, one may fall short of receiving the maximum amount the tuition policy allows by several hundred dollars.  

The minimum grade that one is required to receive in order to receive tuition reimbursement is a "B".  If a student experiences a particularly trying semester, and earns a "C" for example, he or she does not receive tuition reimbursement. This can he a deleterious impact and tuition reimbursement is factored into financial aid. 

The unit that I work on is not willing to work with employee schedules to accommodate school schedules, even if the employee's request has minimal impact on the needs of the department. Co-workers have left the organization because of this. 

I opted to not choose tuition reimbursement from SMH because of the stipulations and the fact that their policy benefits them in regards to paying out as little money as possible to the employee.

This is a great hospital to work in, very prestigious and expects night standards from employees. Managers are kind of phony and it's crazy that people outside of the workplace get interviews and positions before the current workers. Though I have a good feeling that Managers could be acting like they support you and that the relationship between you and them is ok, but then aren't saying good things about you to other hiring managers when they have never clued on to you that there was ever an issue in the first place, and it's strange when you barely ever see them seeing as I work on the weekends only and have not ever gotten a write up, a meeting to discuss issues, or had any issues with co-workers. I think it's just to keep their own floor staff and not lose workers, because I have filled over 9 applications for Nursing positions and managers don't even want to respond. I find that very strange and have not ever experienced such a thing. Let alone promising positions after you graduate and get your license and then stating you are only hiring experienced nurses AND THEN hiring a brand new nurse who was a tech from another floor. Strange and once again phony. Otherwise, this is a great place to work with differentials, overtime pay, self-scheduling system, and opportunities to move up in the workplace if you know the right people and managers

To start off, I’ve had many years of experience in healthcare. Every hospital I’ve worked at has been great until I started here. Management for the flow logistics department (patient transport) is unorganized, has poor communication and doesn’t seem to care for transport as much as they should. Most of the  nurses and PCT’s / CNA’s are absolutely rude, I have never ever dealt with such terrible attitude and behaviors within the 4 years I’ve been in healthcare. Using “stress” as an excuse is not a fair justification at all. You are to be professional and respectful no matter how bad your day is. Not to mention I came from a trauma center where nurses were assigned 8 patients and were still kind and appreciative to transporters. There is absolutely no excuse for the rude and arrogant behavior from nurses and other staff within healthcare. It seems here at Sarasota memorial hospital (Venice) transporters are perceived lower status of the role, there is lack of recognition for the importance of transportation, and a hierarchical culture within this hospital where certain roles are seen as less important than others, leading to a lack of respect towards patient transporters; even though their work is crucial for patient care and smooth operations. It is highly unfortunate that no matter what is said about this issue, nothing will be done, because transporters are unvalued at Sarasota memorial hospital Venice. 

There was no typical day at work for me. My position touched all areas of HR and my planned day could change in an instant. I was lucky enough to be part of the HR system implementation in 2000 and was sent to many PeopleSoft/Oracle HR system (Compensation, Benefits, Recruitment, and Payroll) courses. Management was always very supportive and encouraged education which helped my career growth tremendously. My position in HR included training new co-workers on the HR system, interpret hospital policy for compensation and benefits as needed and various other tasks including data retrieval as needed. I feel, if asked, they would describe me as a person that was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. The hardest part of my job was keeping a good balance between my HR duties and my HRIS duties because of logistics and reporting structure. Although my position reported directly to HR, my HRIS duties overlapped many projects with IT and Payroll. These three departments reported to three different VP's and were housed in three different locations. The most enjoyable part of my job was the interaction with the employees at SMH. I was a very active participant during hospital events such as open enrollment, service banquets, and fund raising events.
