The overall benefits package is strong, but not nearly as strong as the company touts it to be. It's competitive, but overall not necessarily anything outstanding or unique, with the exception of the Defined Benefit Pension and Performance Share Plan (PSP). Very solid PTO package that you can use without question (at least in my experience, though I've seen different treatment for high performers/senior associates and junior associates). Parental leave is great (4 weeks), but that's also becoming a table stakes benefit. If you're a top performer and know how to advocate for yourself, you'll do well and move up quickly - if not, you'll likely struggle a bit more to get opportunities for promotion or advancement. My management chain personally has been great, however that's more of an outlier - most low to mid level managers are not as supportive, inexperienced, and generally not great leaders. 

Upper level management/executives generally are very disconnected from the individual contributor level, making decisions without input (or ignoring input) of most associates. There's a significant generational divide between upper management (boomers who typically have been at the company 10+ years) and individual contributors (which is largely Gen Z and Millennials, and growing). An example of this is the new mandated return to office corporate policy, requiring all associates to work in the office at least 2 days per week (with no exceptions). The majority of individual contributor associates are opposed to any required return to office, but management completely ignored this and pushed the mandate anyways with very little justification or data to support it - instead touting ambiguous "office culture" and "enterprise productivity" buzzwords. They over estimate and tout their "total benefits package", using it to justify paying most associates 30%-50% below market rate for their positions. You will be significantly underpaid (in terms of base salary + bonus) as an individual contributor - that is guaranteed. HR operates with a very old school, antiquated mentality and are not receptive to any feedback - you have to fight for promotions and constantly be getting job offers externally to force HR to counter-offer and receive salary increases and promotions. Very high turnover rates over the last few years due to HR stubbornness, upper management's inability to adapt to new ways of working (hybrid and remote workers), lack of advancement opportunities, corporate red tape, and lack of interesting or exciting work - this has been especially problematic in Enterprise Technology areas. Upper management also generally is completely unaware of resource needs, with most technology teams being severely understaffed and heavily reliant on external consultants and staff augmentation, leaving associates with large workloads of primarily maintenance and support work.

Typical day at work aside of structured work schedule include minor to major sporadic tech issues. Rarely are there major job issues.

Skills acquired: Typing skills, 10 key, Main Frame functions, Adminserver Functions, Outlook Functions, Microsoft Excel functions, customer focused emails, Accurint Search functions, process improvement feedback, creating workflows...Networking gets you places.

Understanding the structures of upper management and engaging in creating relationships with managers will get you places.

Co-workers abide to rules and are subject to appropriate at times. Not all associates are able to seek counseling when under pressures that causes over-stressing due to the demands for reaching goals. A lot of the times they confine in each other their struggles.

Hardest part of the job would be the communication between the different departments as well as the different set of workflows for each department. Each has its own style of communicating and rules to follow that the function of producing the products doesn't always corroborate with one another department, causing delays in customer requests and work processes. To add, it's demonstrated that there are competing goals between different supervisors and administrators for process improvements and workflow that doesn't always optimize for fast easy flow of production, rather unnecessary and excessive check points for the lower grade associates to handle.

Most enjoyable parts were the bonuses and benefits.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The well built culture. Everyone is extremely welcoming and they truly want you to be comfortable with what you do. Your leader will work with you to make sure you are where you want to be in your career even if that’s not in their department. Vertical and lateral movement happens often! This is the first job that I have actually enjoy working at. Free parking and breakfast helps too!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Learning the different systems but there is a ton of resources and making mistakes is something to be afraid of.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Really great of course everything is team to team but from what I have seen and experienced they care about you as an individual. I have several people on my team dealing with things that hinder them from coming into the office and it’s no big deal we work with them and take on stuff if they can’t manage. It’s really nice to see that support and know you will have it if you need it. When I was sick I was pretty adamant about still working but both my bosses reassured me it was ok to take the time I needed. When my family member died they allowed me paid grievance time!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I go in 2 days a week, I don’t have to but I like to there’s no pressure from my bosses to come in. I start working at 7:30 end at around 4:15 at home. In office I get there about 7:45 get free breakfast, do my thing, have lunch from the cafe or go to restaurants near by as we are in the heart of downtown. After that back to work and then leave.

I've enjoyed working for Securian for eight years, a typical day at work consists of data entry, verifying information, auditing payroll files, determining eligibility of participants, and mostly computer based work. My current supervisor is the best supervisor I've had in any position I've been in, she's understanding, and easy to work for, she makes my job pleasant. I would say my co workers are hard working, with a lot of personality differences, but all in all we are a good team. The most enjoyable part of my job would be when it is busy, it makes the day fly by. The hardest part of the job would be the attention to detail, triple checking that everything looks correct before it passes my desk. In my position I have learned the importance of my role in this company, our participants depend on us to do a great job, no matter how small our role seems, we are all equally important to produce great results for our clients.

I worked in tech so I can only speak to that. There is a lot of outdated technology and process, lots of IT red tape and ineffective/unnecessary middle management. It feels like a step back in time or some days, The Onion. They make you come in two days a week to do a job you can and most have been doing from home. The office environment is nothing special, same goes for downtown St. Paul. It's bland. If you start and end your career here you may enjoy a nice pension plan (although who can say for sure) and decent vacation time. As someone who joined mid-career, though, it felt like the same handpicked lifers were the only ones to advance and reinforcing the status quo was job one. You could come here and coast until you retire, but if you have ambition and want to keep your technology skills sharp and be innovative, this isn't a place to do that. Also the pay is below market rate for technology professionals in the greater twin cities area. Benefits are what you'd find at any mid to large company in the area.

When I first started at the company I felt as though the company really valued its employees. That feeling slowly changed after about 5 years. Securian doesn't care one bit about any of its workers. They have sold off multiple divisions from the company on the last year, stripping hundreds of workers of their pensions. The company is more committed to down town St. Paul than it is to their workers. They are forcing workers back into the office even though the data shows the workers are just as productive working remote and the workers made it clear they didn't want to go back in. I went from wanting to recommend anyone I knew to apply at Securian to now telling everyone I know that they should avoid the company like the plague. We'll below industry pay for all their jobs. The pension is great but with the direction of the company and the fact they have such high turnover rate and can't keep new talent, I bet the pension gets pulled in the next couple of years.

Even on a good day, I would leave Securian feeling drained and overwhelmed. I had very little support compared to the high expectations that were put on me every day. My supervisor would often not show up to our scheduled meetings which made it difficult to present issues to her. I was put down constantly in front of my coworkers and made to feel like less than my peers. HR is a joke, I never heard back when I tried to get help with my supervisor’s inappropriate behavior. I found out later that they had friends in HR, so it’s not really a mystery why I was disregarded. Unfortunately the culture at Securian is extremely cliquey and people are trash talking each other constantly. Very toxic environment, not at all a friendly place to work. The benefits Securian offers are similar to other companies, nothing special.

Securian is the best company I have worked for in my career. They have a fantastic onboarding process which includes a robust training program that provides new hires with a very clear understanding of the organization as a whole. As you grow in the organization, they provide ongoing training that is well developed and thorough. Their HR department is very much a business partner, actively involved with other business units with any and all events that may require support such as process changes, re-orgs, progressive discipline, training, etc.

This organization is fully invested in the development of it's employee population. I only left after 6 yrs due to relocation out of state. I would recommend this organization to anyone in the St. Paul area.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I only have call center experience- and that position is inherently stressful-every minute of your day is tracked and monitored. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall I think it is a positive environment but again not much overlap/networking when you’re tied to your desk all day.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Brutal. Call after call in a center where 80% of the people don’t have the ability to resolve escalated issues so they just transfer them.

Securian is glossy on the outside, but the workers don't actually enjoy their work here. High turn overs. They train you on Mutiple of things throughout the year, you'll never get to settle and enjoy the work. Their technology is outdated, the laptops are always blowing out hot air. Maybe if the work was repetitive, I would enjoy it more. However, I feel like it's been almost a year and I'm still training non-stop. As soon as I'm done with one training, they throw 2-3 more at me. This cycle goes on. Information is overloaded and overwhelming. If you like high stress and hybrid, go for it. If you prefer a steady boat like me, don't waste your time.
