If you are content with earning $80k a year and working 9-5, then this is not the right place for you. If you are okay with grinding a bit harder and making $130k-$160k or even more, then this is where you should be. This probably won't happen in your first year, but is a very real possibility in your second or third. I have seen some people make $100k+ in their first year, although it is not common.

Any sales job comes with pressure/stress and long hours, including this one. A lot of the negative reviews are harping on this aspect of the business, but if you don't like these things, then you should not be at a recruitment agency or doing sales. We actually work less hours than most other recruitment firms. We also recently put a flexible working hour policy in place which lets individuals that have shown success within the business leave up to an hour earlier than our normal hours.

I've had a positive experience with management - being taught everything from the ground up from day one, being pushed and motivated to work harder and better. 

From an opportunity standpoint, this is one of the most meritocratic environments ever. It doesn't matter what your ethnic, academic, or prior work background is. The top performers are the ones who get the opportunities for advancement first and it's all about the money you bring in - there is a leaderboard that everyone has access to which makes it pretty crystal clear who is doing well. There are 25 and 26-year-olds that are managing teams of 5+ individuals, some even at 10+. This is not common at most companies and this is why this is truly a unique opportunity. Not everybody can get to that level, but you are given an unbiased platform to do so if you join this company.

I started my career at Selby Jennings thinking I would have this career for at least a few years. However, I was out of there in about 8 months. The days are very long and extremely difficult to get use to (10 plus hours a day). Managers there are very money driven, and if you didn't start off as one of the 10 people who helped grow out the NYC office, there is no room for growth, no matter how hard you work. Its all luck with this type of recruiting job, and if you don't hit the "targets" set by your managers, you are labeled as "lazy" or "not working hard enough". They attract young, out of college kids because they make promises they can't keep, such as guaranteeing that you will make over 80,000$ your first year off commission, which is completely unrealistic. However, since everyone in the company is so young and energetic, it does make for a very fun working environment. Maybe not the most professional, but definitely fun. Random outings, company paid trips, Thursday night Pub night, Team Nights just to name a few of the fun things the company does to bring the company together. Overall, very good learning experience, but wouldn't exactly suggest it to somebody who is just coming out of college and doesn't want to end up in recruiting for the rest of their lives.

I left Selby Jennings as I needed to relocate with my partner, but the time I spent with the company was absolutely a positive experience. I was pushed and challenged but I learned more about myself and how to build my own personal brand and business, as a part of a whole, than anywhere I had worked previously. 

It is not a job for everyone, but for those who embrace the environment and culture you can 100% be successful and make really good money here. Also, the people are awesome.

Working at Selby has been challenging due to the sales driven environment, but with the help and support of my manager, I really feel at home at work. I always receive the support I need and my manager and teammates are always on hand for help!

As part of my day to day, I love knowing I have the responsibility to manage the day in hand. I love working with both clients and candidates, and no day is the same. I used to be quite shy, but working here has really bought on and developed my confidence and communicational skills.

Overall a great job to get into especially out of college. Really thorough training and generally easy as long as you work hard and know how to sell yourself to people.

Cons
All companies have some sort of politics in place. If you are liked you probably will get better opportunities, If you're quiet or "disliked" you will be overlooked.
The commission structure is not thoroughly explained enough prior to employment. It is not as easy to make commission and be as financially free as they say it might be

Working for SJ was an amazing experience. Apart from having an incredibly supportive and open-minded manager, my colleagues and the environment we worked in allowed me to grow, both as an individual and a professional. I could be myself in every scenario, without worrying on being judged. I could share ideas and brainstorm with other members of my team in complete ease.

Its a very high pressured place to work.  You work 11 hours a day and its a very sales driven environment. You have a manager that is supposed to help you with everything you need but sometimes they just put themselves first. Its a nice culture to be around other young college graduates but sometimes its too much like a frat house and can be very immature

I this place is a bit of nightmare.  The culture is not good and the coffee machine doesn't work.  There is too much cliquing amonst the operating groupings and the really have a boiler feel.  No go for this cheeky place.  32K is not enough to live on.

You get what you put in. Great commission structure but prepare to be micromanaged and badgered about KPIs constantly despite how senior/successful you are. 

It was by far the worst company i have worked at, the management is toxic. Love micromanaging and terribly unprofessional. Save yourself from working here.
