I am disappointed to say this an awful workplace. The job itself is good if you are able to handle the fast-paced environment (a plus for me). HOWEVER, the management and supervisors are a deal-breaker and have pushed many employees to quit.

We, as an agency, are so understaffed that we are EXTREMELY overworked (to the point where management demand we do illegal actions to cover up how overworked we are)--- In a typical month, a case manager might log 160 or so hours. Last month, I logged over 320 hours.--- I feel bad for any new-hires in the agency because they have a huge case load thrown on to them with little training and high expectations. Our last 3 new-hire case managers quit within 1 month. I was lucky to ease into training when they weren't so desperate for case managers. 

As per my job description, I conduct home visits with clients. The situations I am put into are dangerous and despite my expressions of being uncomfortable with seeing particular clients, I am forced to do so anyway. My supervisor refuses to adopt the role of "case manager", so I have been unofficially assigned all of the cases of my colleagues who quit. I am officially assigned 67 cases, however I have taken on over 100 as I am the only case manager left under this supervisor. 

This was an excellent job when I first began, but Selfhelp is going down hill fast and I advise you to stay away. Selfhelp is THE lowest-paying case management agency for bachelor and masters degree social workers but are faced with a fast-growing number of high-intensity cases. 
Other agencies like SNAP, queens community house, NY Foundation, do similar work for much greater pay. Think before you apply.

The work as a social worker was slow paced but this varied depending on your location. The caseload was high but many of the clients did not need to be contacted as frequently. Frankly there were some unrealistic goals to be accomplished with such little resources I don't even know how the program is still standing. Management definitely were reinventing the wheel with outreach and programming that it was stale--management has been there for years and way too afraid to speak up and just move on. You try and be creative but were shut down constantly. The pay was garbage, starting SW with no license made $50k and even with a license you were paid the same! Heard from other programs SW were paid more and for NYC, that's starvation right there! Cheap with the pay, unrealistic expectations and some late nights when you are short staffed or were assisting in running a program with no office assistant or recreation assistant as funding was always an issue (non-profit world for ya). Would only recommend for experience and if you like working with the elderly otherwise, you can be better compensated and better resourced elsewhere.

I have learned alot from working in this company. From the beginning I got placed into the Home Health Aid classes in Spanish and I had so much support from everyone since the beginning to end. Then I finished my month long classes from 9-5 to get my Health Aid Certificate. There is when they ask about the interview process and the times I'm available location I can work around. I got placed into a home and the family was so nice a daughter and her mother. I've been working with them for so long then I felt like her condition was getting worse so I called my coordinator and she went in to work making sure everything was okay with the patient before I go back I fear for her safety. The company was there a phone call away everytime something pops up with a patient. You have the choice to work alot of over time with many different elderly people I've experienced many things and learned alot along the way. I get to talk to elderly and be there for them on a daily basis at the comfort of there own home. The pay was great but you don't get much time off you just constantly working I was half way on my vacation and they was calling me because they needed people. Working in this place was an experience I will never forget I like this company and the people that work here I wish I could've stayed but new york has gotten expensive and not safe for people with children.

Working at Self-Help as a recruiter has been a very rewarding experience. The organization is genuinely mission-driven, and it’s refreshing to recruit for roles that directly support economic mobility, affordable housing, and community impact. You really feel like the work you’re doing matters.

Leadership is supportive and collaborative, and there’s a strong emphasis on communication and transparency. As a recruiter, I appreciated being trusted to manage my workflow while still having access to guidance and resources when needed. Hiring managers are engaged and thoughtful about the candidates they’re looking for, which makes the recruiting process efficient and meaningful.

The culture values diversity, equity, and inclusion—not just as buzzwords, but in practice. Team members are approachable, professional, and passionate about the work. It’s also a great environment for learning and growing within HR and talent acquisition, especially if you’re interested in long-term development.

Overall, Self-Help is an excellent place to work if you want to grow as a recruiter while contributing to a mission that has real community impact.

Our experience at this workplace was deeply disappointing. My co-workers and I had such negative experiences that we chose not to stay after graduating—just a few months in.

From the beginning, the work environment was unwelcoming and rude. We were misled about the nature of the jobs—there were no real positions available for us. In reality, we were only used to cover for permanent staff who were on leave.

If you didn’t manage to find a job that suited you within a month, they would terminate your contract. Promises about health insurance turned out to be false—there was none. When you’re sick or unable to work, there is no support or understanding; instead, you're quickly let go.

It's clear they keep recruiting new staff constantly because they don’t treat people well and turnover is extremely high.

Overall, we would not recommend working here. The way we were treated was unacceptable.

This job is available for anyone and everyone who applies. The barrier of entry is non existent - Here is where the good part ends.

The recruiter WILL waste your time with a useless presentation that is a restatement of the indeed listing, and bring up the fact that their wage listing is misleading (barely above minimum wage, with bad benefits). 

The recruiter will also not bring up the time slots for training until the very end (And in fact, gave me an attitude for asking for their schedule!). 

They assume all of their applicants are very desperate and in need of the job and act accordingly. After processing all of my paperwork, I asked for the training schedule and after the recruiter telling me that "they don't have to work around my schedule, I have to work around theirs" No time slots were available! I wasted a total of 5 hours because of an incompetent policy of them not caring.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Loved working for Selfhelp, Everyone was so kind, pleasant and understanding.
I retired and moved to another state is the only reason I left or I most likely would still be working there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part was making sure the client's received the services they deserved on a daily basis, which entailed finding and assigning an appropriate person to the client.

The work environment is very pleasant, it is a diverse culture which makes it a great place to work.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There are different things on different days making the job challenging, and interesting knowing that you are helping and assisting clients every day.

It's hard to work with Supervisor's who are related to Upper management and given ok to do what ever they want. Some times you can come a cross nuts who run departments and don't really know what they are doing, and like to turn something that you teach them and take credit for something you show them. 

Their's a lot of personnel who are great people, but Management sucks and like to use your services just to get knowledge from various business that you have work with in the past and after they learn and you clean out there situation and departments, only then they will say I no longer need your services, and then trap you into situation where you can't continue to work as a Professional.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Aide’s don’t properly care for the clients & Selfhelp knows that & don’t take proper action. They don’t want to hear what’s being done wrong at a client’s home. Their solution is “well you can only do so much.” That makes it impossible for  a caring Aide to do their job.

It is not good at all. The heads don’t respect, accept or acknowledge the truth. They don’t want to hear it

Unfulfilling because the negative issues are not addressed & you are expected to work under horrid conditions, overlook obvious wrongdoing & go on

This is by far the worst place to work as a social worker. No training. You get cases before you even attend orientation. The turn over rate is really high. 80 percent of the social work staff are tempts due to that reason. Everyone there are alcoholics and drug users on the job. The Community Guardian program is by far the worst program ever. The clients are constantly complaining because the people up top do not care. They don't care about the employees or the clients. They play favoritism. The senior workers don't do work, and everyone new take the fall for the same thing that's been done for years on the job. The directors are disrespectful, they communicate with you however they want.
