• Complete responsibility for organizing and ensuring the flow of work was continuous. Assisted in all risk management issues. Reviewed drawings, specifications and design before development, supplying materials and purchasing materials
• Responsible for reviewing subcontracts for scope of work in order to manage subcontractors. Perform quality assurance inspections to achieve compliance with contract plans and specifications. Created submittals to Caltrans for materials to be used on the job and responsible for creating and responding to RFI’s for work discrepancies
• Responsible for reviewing and updating the three week schedule, Created and tracked survey requests, compaction testing and pour requests for concrete and asphalt paving
• Storm Water Pollution Preparation. Conducted field audits and reported. Worked with and scheduled crews to resolve all deficiencies in a timely manner
• Updated and tracked quantities, coding of item work, tracked change orders and item adjustments. Created lanes closures through Caltrans’s new online “Lane Closures System”
• Continuously met with Caltrans fostering excellent relations to keep the job running smoothly and resolved any issues regarding the job or subcontractors

As long as you invest in your work and don’t get complacent with your duties you have the best opportunity to succeed in your career here. Supervisors are very helpful with training you on how to properly use and take care of the equipment you are required to use in the workplace your on. In their eyes, no question is a dumb question. If you are unsure about anything you can always ask them for help or advice. The biggest thing they will make sure you know is that you have a right to refuse to do something you feel is unsafe. If you are told to do it by your supervisor and you are not comfortable doing it, speak up about it and tell them why. 9/10 times the Forman may have someone else with more experience do it but in a way to show you how to do it safely and effectively. Working with Sema gives you the opportunity to start with 0 experience and end your journey as a supervisor in a couple years time with knowledge of every aspect of your job and equipment experience that you have to learn to manage others in the future as you are today 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Benefits are great, compensation is competitive. Coworkers and field staff all hardworking and awesome. Just management plays favoritism and are too focused on chasing the money to care about good employees. If they don’t like you or eat lunch with them everyday in their little group, or you don’t let them dog you out when they are stressed, or if you ask for help on something they don’t have the time of day for you. They see you as replaceable and will hire the next guy. Owners are nice people, the company itself is good. Just the lower levels of management such as project managers need serious training. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Managers who don’t care or have time to help you grow. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good people overall and compensation. Just be aware project managers may be experienced in the trade but may not have experience leading or dealing with people or even enjoy it. There’s better out there.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Project controls, project manager assigned additional tasks, tracking quantities and cost, and paying invoices.

The place is the worst I have ever worked at.I have been a diesel mechanic for over 30+ years. You get hired on and it’s all Sunshines. And Rainbows then it changes quick from get accused from stealing hours and last I heard was padding hours. Well supposed to be field mechanic but the days a person should be off due to the weather your not and the days you should be working your off.I never received insurance because the HR Department would never answer my calls and never return any of my calls and say something to the Boss and nothing ever happened because it wasn’t something that was important to him.But on another note when you decline 401k they will pull it out of your check every week.There is no management there and when a person needs something it may get addressed or not depends on the mood the boss is in.The one thing I did get out of this experience that a company can spent a lot of money for a F450 and completely stock it with company tools and it’s used as a mobile office and very  seldom worked out of. So just be ready to throw parts at things and be a parts changer.There is so much more to say but I would be here all day.  But I’m always up for question.

A typical day at SEMA is not what most people think. As of now with the new recruits, they struggle to adapt to the jobsite and lack the presence of proper communication skills. Their mess ups with their upcoming plans and projects results in extra days to come in to fix their mistakes by working through it. The management used to be pretty decent with the people I worked with, until more people began to leave or transfer without any notice. The workplace and how things are scheduled throughout the day is pretty fast-paced with no real opportunity to learn, and that is what is the most difficult part of SEMA is looking for any downtime to increase experience and learning curve. The only positive thing I can really say about SEMA is the certain people I've worked with (not including management) that have gave me unforgettable memories there.

I was there 6 months; it started off ok for what it was. You didn't get "trained" and basically followed the other drivers to a pit for fill (dirt work), then went to wherever they told you to go, (again following people in the know), and just rinsed and repeated; then October came.
 The  rumors started and then the excuses came and then certain site managers showed their true colors; from there it was downhill....
 They started laying drivers off arbitrarily; first for a day or two, then for a week or two; I managed to avoid that part; but the hours continuously became less and less; and don't even talk about the equipment; I've seen frames break and transmissions completely lock up; some of the tractors are retired dump trucks with the beds removed and fifth wheels put on and are over 20 years old, so if your looking creature comforts, this isn't the place for you....
 Don't ask for a raise; don't ask for time off; don't ask for benefits or a 401 k....they start you off good for an hourly wage, but that's where it begins and ends....
 If your with the "in" crowd, apparently your fine; if your quiet and just dothe job and mind your own business; well???
 And don't even ask me about what happened to my car while I worked there.....

Good company to work for! Plenty of hours, pay raises and opportunity for for advancement for someone who puts in the time, tries and gives a hoot. It can be very demanding sometimes but Time off when needed and Paid vacation and $600 a year for closing is nice to have. The equipment maintenance crews are driven and high production “get it done right and efficiently the first time” type of group, they don’t tolerate much cabbing up, rework or misdiagnosis. Hours can get short in the winter due to weather and nature of the job... being it is dirt work weather can effect the hours but “nature of the beast” in the dirt work business... but I have never worked under 40 hours no matter the weather unless I took time off. some days were no fun in order to get my 40 but the mechanics work when no one else on the job does! I will say It is pretty nice not working in a blizzard. Travel incentives are great! Management seems to care about the employees and try to accommodate everyone the best they can. It’s a good place to be a mechanic or Oiler as long as you do your job keep busy and get things done.

Traveling Crew is great. Leadership is above and beyond,which creates a safe and productive work environment. Equipment is nice and maintained well. What an awesome place to work! I've been in the industry many years and love it here.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Good question. Working on being here 2 years and it's the most stress free job I've ever had. Stressors would be typical machine operation by accidentally running over a rock that jars your spine 😁or what not.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Family oriented. They try to care about you in a genuine way.

Morning Briefing.
Stripping and grubbing.
Subgrade prep.
Cut ditches and slopes.
Fill Embankments.
Finish Grading.

The main guy for equipment in texas is a joke to work for. Always micromanaging and letting things go without being handled. High turnover. Working for sema is good unless you are in the maintenance department and work in texas and he is your supervisor. Empty promises left and right. No company truck or take home vehicle. A weak 20$ a day per diem. Even when sent out of town you will play musical trucks and have to switch out tools over and over again. You get promised good hours each week and end up with 50 and doing 2 jobs. This guy gives you 10 hours a day and thats it. So don't count on overtime and if you are sent out of town he's so cheap he will make you take your own personal vehicle and will only pay you drive time for one way. Company has no work in texas
