Senior Living Communities

The management team at the local level and corporate level is not present and support is limited.  Former Executive Director had limited presence onsite and managed with a complete lack of professionalism.  Favortism from upper management is a common theme and limits overall productivity, growth and fairness.  The community is in desperate need of capital improvement, but very little is done to resolve ongoing issues or improving the overall asthetics of the community.  Residents regularly complain and are forced to reach out directly to the corporate office for resolution often times to no avail.  Pay is lower than advertised due to occupancy fee options that can reduce commissions by 50%.  Base salary is well below the industry standard.  The process from contract to close is inefficient from the renovation process to  allowing family members to extend occupancy by contuniung to pay monthly service fees.  This also extends the time to earn commissions for the sales professionals.  The best part of the job was working with wonderful  prospects and interacting with a select number of colleagues and residents.  The hardest part of the job was selling a service/product that was not up to the expectations of the residents and propsects.  It was also very difficult to work in a team enviroment that was not really a team although it was a shared sales floor. 

A typical day during second shift consisted of gathering trash, cleaning and prep for dinner, because here we served meals as well as contributed to patient care. I also assisted the Med Tech while she gave meds, meaning if she needed help printing documents, sending documents to the pharmacy, and calling our on call RN, I would assist her. I learned that team work is a luxury because not many coworkers were willing to help you, but I also learned that even if no one will help you, it can be a learning experience for you as well, if you just take a deep breath and dive right in and do your best, and get the job done. The hardest part of the job was having to leave my patients because most of them never wanted me to leave them after my shift, but of course I told them I would be back the next day so that made them feel much better. Another hard part of my job was seeing some of my patients who died and couldn't hold on any longer, my patients always touch my heart, and that is really hard for me to see. The most enjoyable part of my job would have to be my patients, they always make my job worth it, its not a paycheck to me, its the chance to change someone's life for the better in anyway that I can, even if its just sitting and talking to them for a little while, at least I make them feel loved and wanted, and that is what touches my heart and reminds me that I make a difference everyday in someone's life.

I was employed at brightwater for almost two years, and in the last two years i really saw it go downhill. We had new RN supervisors every few months. New DON three times in two years. New administrator in health care twice. Haven't had my yearly raises. They don't want any staff members to do any over time. There's no communication between administrators and nursing staff. I felt like rules were always being changed. Plus I never knew if I was going to leave work on time or four hours later than scheduled due to staff not showing up. 

The reason I stayed for almost two years were because of the patients and the residents. I care about them so much, but working there felt like I didn't have enough time to care for them like I could've. 

The nursing assistants have to do facility laundry and residential laundry,which takes assistants off the floor. The nursing assistants have to call IT tech to fix tablets when they stop working to chart on. The orders aren't ever updated on tablets so you never know patient Information. It's like a guessing game working there. 

During the weekends if we didn't have staffing show up no one knew what to do or who to call. 

A few times the kitchen aide never showed up so we would have to come off the floor as a nursing assistant to do the KITCHEN'S JOB.

*A typical day starts with making sure that I have everything I need to make the food that's on the menu for that day. Next, I make a decision to either change the menu or find a way to come up with a viable substitution for what I need. More often than not, I'm able to pull off the service successfully, which brings me a sense of satisfaction that I would probably get were it not for the initial adversity.
*I would say that I've learned a lot about thinking outside the box and having more confidence in my abilities as a result. 
*I have a very good work relationship with my immediate supervisor. In my opinion he is one of the best leaders I've ever had the privilege of working with. He gives us a lot of creative freedom in our positions and praises our successes. Unfortunately, those above him very rarely follow suit.
* My co-workers are a great group of chefs. They're all very hard workers and we all look out for and help each other.
* I have to say that the hardest parts of the job are being on my feet for an entire shift with no breaks and the pay is not that good.
* The most enjoyable part of the job for me is the people. I genuinely like my co-workers and my immediate supervisor. I also have a soft spot for several of the residents here.

Your daily job from 7pm to 7am. Is 12hrs nightshift consisted of coming in getting report from day shift cnas. Then you do vitals and lay about 8 to 13 residents to sleep. Meaning you have to clean after lazy first shift because most of the residents are soaked. You have to put them in their PJs then peri- care. Then use sit a stand and hoyer lifts because they are all wheelchair bond. You have 2 to 3 showers M- Sat. Plus do showers laundry!!! This is everyday !!! & wash all of the skilled linens. Most of the time is 2 Cnas overnight lucky if you get the 3rd Cna. All the linens and trash are left from day shift and you have to cleaned leftover food trays from day shift Cnas on top of rounds. Then morning comes you have 2 get ups. The night residents call lights go off for bedpans and the residents are very needy.  Management only cares for seniority not for the residents. I'm offended coming in and seeing trash in rooms and soak residents, and their wearing dirty clothes soaked. This is ever night. But the best part of my job there is caring for the residents. This place do not deserve my hard work. The Politics here are from day shift cnas who do not work but hide in residents rooms.

I believe the motto goes people first, staff last, equipment to do your job - non-existent. This company only cares about making money off of these poor residents. They charge them out the butt for literally everything. Yet the company can not even provide adequate pay for their staff (but somehow can pay agency??) or provide a safe living environment for their residents. The founder of nursing stressed how important fresh linens were back in the 1800s but, Summit Hills in 2021 doesn't have one ounce of linen without a doodoo stain on them. I believe that no matter how hard you try for this company it is never enough. Unless you work day shift, then you are practically Jesus's disciples and get to break bread with management for all your "hard work". If you are night shift you usually just get crumbs and criticism. They are sorry and ungrateful. I truly feel bad for the residents of this facility. I will love and miss them but, my mental health has decreased working my butt off at this job.

On a daily basis ADL's were performed with residents of varying abilities (from minor assistance needed to completely dependent).  Housekeeping and laundry were also taken care of for the residents. The most enjoyable part of my job was the gratification, and knowing how much the little things (i.e. remembering to ask about the dinner with their family over the weekend, or how the new great-grandbaby was doing) meant to them.  It was also gratifying to help the residents achieve some of the tasks that were proven to be a challenge for them without some assistance.  The hardest part of the job was when I worked in the memory unit.  Some of the things said by the residents were things that were inappropriate, and it was hard to not be offended by them at certain times.  In the moment it was challenging to let it go and to not take it personally.

One of the best parts of working at this company is the warm and welcoming environment everyone is friendly, supportive, and always willing to help each other out.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It could be keeping up with managing multiple priorities at once, especially during busy periods. However, with a supportive team it's make challenges manageable and a smooth transition.

The work environment and culture at Marsh's Edge on St. Simons Island is warm, service-focused, community-oriented, and take the care of both members and employees very serious. Always want to ensure everyone is appreciated and seen for what they do.
