Serenity Behavioral Health Systems

Serenity is a joke.  The entire place is filled with liars.  The pay is that of a stipend.  There is no professionalism.  The agency favors and gives privileges to the staff that they hire that have a mental health diagnosis.  They should only hire mentally ill staff to work with others with the same or similar challenges.  Or clearly inform perspective staff that you will be working predominantly with mentally unstable staff.  Allow the perspective candidate to decide if they will be able to tolerate the inconsistencies of unstable coworkers and managers.  No disrespect to the mentally ill but a person who is unstable cannot lead appropriately.  Serenity is a "hustle" for the staff members there.  Barely anyone is professional.  They are oblivious to what professionalism truly means.  Serenity is a "con" agency to exploit both workers and clients.  They do not provide adequate training and they "cover up" issues when they arise.  The staff is disgustingly rude and have the audacity to have biblical verses on their emails.  They seem to be pseudo religious.  They have staff that cross boundaries with the clients regularly i.e., eat clients food, provide food to clients and even request  personal favors from clients like cosmetology services.  Most of the mental health personnel are inundated and severely overworked and drained.  It is impossible to provide quality services if you are overly stressed and decompensating yourself.   Not to mention the mentally ill staff who some of them admit to not recieving treatment themselves.  Serenity also condones you working for free because you are told to clock out. However, it is impossible to complete the bulk of assigned work.   Some positions have an unrealistic quota and documentation must be submitted in a timely manner.  Subsequently, you work for free to meet the deadlines.  And those company/state cars that the staff drive are waiting to break down.  I actually overheard someone that works in the transportation department state so.  Some of the cars have odors and dirt in them from over a decade.  Serenity and their complicit practices are repulsive.  If you candidly engage a staff person there or a client served there, you would learn that serenity is deceptive intentionally.

I'll start with the positives: if you work as direct care you can get basically unlimited overtime as long as you're willing to work. If you're working in the office you can flex your hours, which is nice. And a lit of the people who work at serenity are very friendly and caring. The clients are so amazing and light up your day everytime you see them.
Now the cons: they over load you. Give you completely unmanageable caseloads and write you up for not getting all of your work done, which is impossible to get done. You can ask your supervisors to help and they act like they care but they never take any real action to help you. The company also under pays all of us, and there are no opportunities for a raise without advancement. But the keep you strung along by dangling the carrot of a raise or promotion in front of you. Finally, the general vibe and culture is very negative. There is a lot of gossip and rumors about everyone, and people have formed cliques, which adds to the negative culture. It honestly feels like high school, but everyone is grown adults.

A typical day in my position I fulfilled several different tasks of assisting individuals in the Host Home Department. Throughout the day I completed various administrative duties as well, including answering phones, drafting documents and emails, I also provided strong customer service and resolved different issues such as CIR's. What I have learned thus far since embarking in the working industry is Self-Reliance, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, commercial Awareness, maturity, teamwork, practical Skills, and self-confidence believing I can achieve anything. A positive workplace culture improves teamwork, raises the morale, increases productivity and efficiency, and enhances retention of the workforce. Job satisfaction, collaboration, and work performance are all enhanced. And, most importantly, a positive workplace environment reduces stress in employees. The hardest part of the job is not knowing the importance of acceptance others differences. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to be a  people person. Being able to  always happy and having the ability to interacted with my individuals,  and making sure their needs are being met.

The residents in the group homes are lovely to work with if you like to help and care for people who may be physically or devevolpmentally disabled.  Some house managers are ok but there are some that’s not friendly or professional.  You’ll have to stay over and/or work doubles (16hrs) because staff always calls in and that leaves the person who should be getting off, to stay until someone can come to the home.  You have to pass out medication which is very easy and common sense based.  You will be cooking, cleaning, shopping, running errands for the house.  Also you will assist residents with personal hygiene and dressing if they’re incapable of doing those things for themselves.  Staff isn’t always friendly at all, you do have to watch out for coworkers mistakes (which can be blamed on you if you don’t catch the error fast enough).  It’s an ok place to work however do not expect to always leave at the end of your shift and sometimes you will work 9-12days straight without a day off.  Lastly if you attend college, you don’t have many options for a work schedule as the company DOES NOT care  or work around your school schedule. 

Begin day by checking all documentation, medications, money.
Solve any staffing issues needed. I have learned how to work with dr offices and personal and ventor as pretaing to the clients that we served to solve immediate issues that my occur as well as with the pharmacy that we use for the clients. Learned how to involve my staff in the day to day operations of the group home. To involve the staff in by asking thier input concerning the individuals that we serve. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the individuals that we serve

Not happy with the place- management only visible through negative emails forcing policies down our throats, very low morale, below average pay, no raises, accumulated over 100hrs of PTO but can’t really take off because there’s nobody to cover it, just found out that they’re making us switch over to agency and taking more of our paid holidays away. Done with this place... they don’t appreciate their employees, they’re cheap and they’re good for running off good workers. Also, it’s a 24/7 crisis unit so the facility is constantly used but everything is so outdated, broken-down, or tempormental!

Mostly a good place to work if you enjoy working with individuals with ID/DD

Not much room for advancement/promotions within specific departments

Poor cross-departmental communication/teamwork

Majority of employees are passionate and caring towards the individuals; there are employees that have very poor attitudes and lack professionalism 

Supervisors that do not hold their staff accountable and can set a bad standard for the entire team

Pay-day frequency is only once per month

A typical day at Serenity Behavioral Health requires tremendous patience and flexibility. Sadly, it is my opinion, that Serenity is simply a dumping ground for any client who can pay for a bed. They print a brochure stating all of the services  they say they provide but do not.provide. The restrictions that are imposed on mentally ill patients who also suffer with substance abuse issues are too restrictive. It is a very restrictive program which works for some but not the majority. There are fire code violations such as keeping several people in our building with no windows. The houses they own have bedbugs and rats.

Needs more benefits and room to expand.  It's a great service concept but it has outgrown the building that it is in.  Also, look at the micromanagement issue.
Really enjoyed having a variety of people to work with.  From administration, to medical and clinical.  It was nice to see it all in one place.

Company would do better if communication and consideration is consistent from leadership on down. The non competitive pay attracts the wrong type of employees and behaviors within this agency considering the ever growing list of duties in comparison to the low pay, high stressful days, lack of resources and lack of staff in order to carry out all your duties. I wish management would be more involved with their employees to have actual working knowledge of the realism of their services.
