While working for SUS, I received a number of promotions with pay that was always comparatively low but not so low that it was worth trying to make a lateral move to another organization.  So, you can get promoted if the right people like you (which is a pretty big caveat), but not usually for a pay bump you'd expect if you went to a different organization.  It's true that you won't get a raise without being promoted which was explicitly told to me by management at one point.  Because of that, there really is chronic under staffing throughout most of the programs.  My program was regularly operating at 70-80% of staffing which really adds to the workload.

The experience you have will be really hit or miss depending on what department you're in and your supervisor.  Most of the sites are left to operate more or less independently so unless you're in a director position where you can enact changes, you'll be at the mercy of whoever is running that particular program.  When they're good, that's great.  When they're not, well, they're not.  And there's not really anyone that you can turn to when they're not.  I had both great and not, one for a few years who was great and one for a few months who was not.  Who my manager was at any given time drastically influenced my opinion of SUS for the better or worse.

They've had some scandal and turnover in the upper ranks of certain departments over the last year or two. Unfortunately, most of the people who were left at the top of my department once the dust settled seemed less capable than the people they were replacing which further reinforced that the sites are on their own and we wouldn't be getting support from above.  At one point it became a running joke among our staff that we could never get my off-site supervisor to answer her phone or respond to emails.  Upper management (regional director and above) also tends to focus their limited oversight on what I would consider less important issues while some of the larger, systemic issues go unchecked.  I really hope they clean up their management issues and maybe clean house a little bit.  They're not a bad organization. They just lack oversight and aren't great at holding their management staff accountable.

A typical day at work I am very involved and active. I like to plan strategic ways to ensure that I get my assignments done to the best of my abilities. I have learned numerous things in my line of work. working in a team is very effective. working hard and always keeping a  professional mannerism promotes positivity in the workplace. Managers are very important to the structure of the workplace and work environment. They often determine the tone and atmosphere of the workplace. through my experiences I had the opportunity to be employed by a lot of inspirational managers where I have gained knowledge, character and a positive outlook in my day to day life. 
co-workers can add stability to a workplace or takeaway from the workplace. my many years of working with co-workers taught me that not everyone you work with will have the most pleasant behaviors or bring positivity to the moral of the workplace. Having a positive attitude throughout the work environment can be very infectious and cause others to duplicate the same kind of behaviors. other experiences I have had were very delightful. co-workers are their to help one another and work in a team- based structure . creating a positive work environment,  is something that I love doing with my co-workers. the hardest part of my job is when my co-workers are not using effective communication to sort out any issue or problems that may occur on the job. That sometimes leads to many other ordeals that can easily be minimized by simply communicating. The most enjoyable part of my day is interacting  and being active with my consumers. teaching them different things and watching them develop daily is a great joy to me.

Working for Services for the Under Served was a great opportunity for me because it allowed me to grow personally and develop my skills in many areas professionally most particularly as a manager and leader of people. As a manager I learned how to embrace working with other manages in other departments within the organization who had skill sets and work experiences different from my own. I also really enjoyed being a leader to the  twenty plus staff members that I supervised. One of the more arduous aspects of my job was time management because I had the responsibility of simultaneously overseeing several supportive housing programs and also supervising the staff for each of those programs. The employer valued and emphasized the importance of offering countless opportunities for work and field related trainings for staff to assure that their employees remained current in terms of knowledge and information in order to assure that the best practices and services were being followed and providers to the consumers. The employer provided a very supportive work culture by allowing managers to feel that they were an important part of the overall team. I truly enjoyed my daily work experience. I appreciated the fact that Senior Management respected my abilities and allowed me to perform my role with a certain amount of autonomy. I also enjoyed that in my role as a Program Manager I was able to get to know and engage with the many consumers who resided in the housing programs that I was responsible for managing.

For the amount of work that we do, we should be compensated, however because it’s non-profit that is unlikely. The benefits are great, however the salary for the people down below should be more because without us little people there wouldn’t be a need for the big wigs at the top. Also living in NYC is expensive, at least bring back the bonuses. I have had good and bad experiences with SUS, however my co-workers who became friends made the experience better. If constant change is not for you then I wouldn’t suggest care coordination. The State always has something new to implement. The work is easy but what makes it hard is the amount of work and the sometimes impossible expectations of one person with a caseload of 40-45 clients.  It becomes tedious, overwhelming, and stressful. The caseload is too big to provide quality service and that in and of itself is a disservice to the clients. However care coordination is the direction that social work and nursing are heading. In the end it’s a business and it needs to make money so it’s a double edge sword to me. Overall it’s a great start to gain experience in social services. I

•Assure that clients reliably attend medical/outpatient appointments.
•Assure that clients comply with prescription regiment.
•Write clear service plans and progress notes and maintain meticulous documentation of service visits
•Provide services in the clinical home and in the community
•Coordinate ancillary care for clients to ensure continuous, comprehensive care.
•Collaborate with all members of the team, primary care specialty doctor and all partners on a regular basis.
•Initiate appropriate referrals to ensure authorization, Assist clients to obtain access to transportation.
•Research, evaluate and recommend community resources for clients.
•Work with medical home team inpatient providers, discharge planners, nurse partners to ensure efficient use of inpatient resources in a timely discharge to an appropriate setting.
•Collaborate with mental health and substance abuse care providers, collaboratively with the Value Options Field Care Coordinator to ensure coordination of all services and integration of services.
•Report serious incidents, allegations, or sensitive situations to supervisors.  Complete incident reports in accordance with policy.  The day was busy, however co-workers worked well together and made the work enjoyable.

What is the best part of working at the company?
This place is a total mess. Management lack oversight, upper management is even worse. There is consistent IT issues and SUS does not care. Managers do not communicate properly. I was even asked to engage in health insurance fraud, as i asked to pass for on of my clients alto speak to their insurance. I denied it. This place is very corrupt, save yourselves the headache. All they care is about the money made by staff and do it care about their staff. Please run if asked to work in this agency, because you’ll be signing up for consistent headaches and unnecessary stress due to the lack of care from management. They power hoard, abuse their power, and usually promote people without proper credentials or qualified for a position, just because of seniority in the company. Run this place is truly a joke.

Dealing with daily  IT problems and management doing nothing to mend the situation 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Lack of structure, feels like you hanging out and not working. Lack of oversight due management constantly  calling out or stay home and do not go into the office. Then they go home at 3pm and are not reachable after 4pm. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very unpredictable due to the IT issues and lack  of oversight from management. There is no communication whatsoever.

While at Services for the Underserviced, I held a middle management position where I encountered significant challenges. The organizational culture emphasized criticism over constructive feedback, particularly from upper management. Despite my efforts to support my team and collaborate with directors, I often faced intense scrutiny and pressure.

One of the most challenging aspects of my role was navigating a work environment where constructive solutions were met with skepticism and probing criticism. This created a tense atmosphere that often hindered effective communication and collaboration.

Moreover, the task of managing my team's and senior management's expectations and grievances was a significant learning experience. It was not without its challenges, as misunderstandings and emotional tensions occasionally arose, but these instances provided valuable insights into effective conflict resolution and communication strategies.

Ultimately, my experience at Services for the Underserviced provided valuable insights into leadership dynamics and organizational behavior in challenging environments.

My experience at Services for the UnderServed was among the worst professional experiences I have had, and I would not recommend it to anyone seeking a safe, fair, or well-managed workplace.

The biggest issue was leadership. In my experience, management did not protect staff the way a responsible employer should. Employees were expected to manage difficult, high-risk situations, but when serious concerns arose, leadership's response felt weak, selective, and more focused on protecting the organization than on protecting the people doing the work.

The culture made it worse. Staff who showed judgment, asked necessary questions, or spoke up about problems did not seem to be valued. In my experience, the workplace rewarded silence and punished people who made too much sense or challenged poor decisions. That creates fear, burnout, and constant instability.

The organization presents itself as mission-driven, but in my experience, staff well-being came second. That disconnect matters. No one should work in an environment where they feel exposed, unsupported, and easy to replace after giving their time and skill to difficult work.

Before taking a job there, I would urge anyone to ask hard questions about safety, leadership response, staff turnover, and how employees are treated after serious incidents.

As someone who has experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of a toxic work environment and lack of support, I feel compelled to share my insights. Working in such conditions can be deeply demoralizing and emotionally draining. From the constant tension in the air to the absence of constructive feedback and guidance, it's like navigating through a dense fog with no compass.

One of the most disheartening aspects is the lack of support from management and colleagues. Instead of fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual respect, there's a pervasive sense of competition and distrust. Asking for help or voicing concerns often falls on deaf ears, leaving employees feeling isolated and unsupported.

Moreover, the toxicity seeps into every aspect of the workplace, poisoning relationships and stifling productivity. It's challenging to focus on tasks when you're constantly on edge, anticipating the next confrontation or setback.

In such an environment, professional growth becomes nearly impossible. Without mentorship or adequate resources, employees are left to fend for themselves, struggling to meet unrealistic expectations without the necessary support system in place.

The environment  was  unconducive for staff.  No verbal or written warning to staff. No corrective measure to staff. The new management  does not have managerial experience or background. It was a horrible place to work. No consideration  if you have a personal  or family issues. They care less about the staff. They did not understand the difference  in role of NP, RN,LPN. The management  want you to do all the work. The staff are not working together as a team. There is no team work. The staff are complaint bitterly among themselves  but they can not expressed their feelings  and concern to management because they will fire them. All the previous NP quit. It is unsafe environment to work. The management  care less about staff. It was a very horrible  place to work. No respect for staff at  all. Treating staff bad in all department. 
 Please investigate  before you work in this place for any improvement  and changes.. No Job security in this SU:S Blake  facility. Staff loose their Job easily.  I am glad and excited to leave the place. Please find out before you apply for Job in this  facility if you need a Job security.
